Building these gaffs is FUN! And trial and error, for SURE! Don't expect perfection on the first or maybe 5th try, but you will get to one you are really happy with! And it is FUN just making them! You should do the get sharky gimmick

Have you considered sanding the cards down rather than trying to split them? Years ago (in the 1990s) I was gimmicking tarot cards. I found them very difficult to split but did find I could sand them down quite easily using a tacky pad and a mouse sander.
