Gravy was probably about as good as Wizzy at the 20GX tech chase at the time of the recording. Wouldn't say it's that much of an understatement.

I recommend having a set script of what to say and what to cover / how to cover it vocally / with examples in mind, instead of "free-styling" it, this video could have been much more condensed imo. But really great info all around! xD

You should remake this video and shorten it to like 5 or 10 minutes with the important content on the 20GX page.

nice stuff. Glad to hear what you guys have to say, I have a group of friends that seems far more interested in the smash community, tournament outcomes, and knowing the terms for tech skill, instead of trying to master tech skill. Been playing 2 years, they have terribly bad habits, and always have been ridiculously predictable, I just fucked up my tech skill 90% of the time, because when I learn something, I use it, even though my badness causes me to miss a lot of errors. Now l-cancel, dash->wavedash, and wavelanding are becoming more of an involuntary bit of muscle memory. I went to a tournament (Illinois) and was upset to find so many players that care more about a higher place in the tournament than they do about fighting people who actually know enough tech skill to play a psychological (fun, competitive) game. Means a lot to me to be able to see more and more videos of topics other than "how to moonwalk" and watching a guy teaching people bad practices but slightly possible (and easy) approaches to doing something.

This might be a noob question to ask but why wavedash right after throwing Fox? Correct me if I'm wrong but Captain Falcon's run is faster than his wavedash.
@Wizzrobe
@Wizzrobe 9 лет назад
You can be more precise with the the position you end up in, You usually want to try and wavedash right outside of shine range but inside of grab range. It's to position yourself more precisely which is harder to do if you decide to foxtrot right on them.

+Lintleth the quickest explanation is that you want to both reach your opponent and be in your standing stance.

Wouldnt a shield stop be even more precise than wavedashing though? Plus you dont experience the same 14 frame waiting period due to a wavedash.

Holding down during a tech chase is not the same as c-stick down C-stick down gives ASDI only, holding down on the control stick (at a time when you can't crouch like during tech chases) gives ASDI+DI Since the percent you can ASDI into the ground is determined by how far the move picks you up off the ground on the first frame (it needs to be less than how far you can ASDI) DI down lowers your trajectory and makes you able to ASDI down into the ground for a larger percent window This also applies for the Raptor boost picking them up off the ground- DSDI would allow them to ASDI down while DIing sideways with the control stick to allow them to have a less vertical angle that distributes some of their knockback sideways, reducing how far up they travel on the first frame and letting them ASDI into the ground at a slightly later percent- did you factor this into your 25% number?

Mind blown... If this is mastered the implications would be nuts. I am a falcon main in PM repping CT and you better believe Im hitting the lab with this concept. Overall I worked a lot on my read ability which helps but when a person is hard to read it just makes for a sloppy match with falcon. Thanks a ton guys.

I really enjoy these videos, but the one option you do that I would optimize would be where you are trying to cover his getup attack or roll away option. You can cover that with stop on reaction. I've played Wizzy and he has much better reactions than I do and I can do it pretty consistently. You can literally just jump over the getup attack and stomp.
@michaelcrawshaw5004
@michaelcrawshaw5004 7 лет назад
why does no one techchase like this? I mean obviously gravy plays fox now but this seems so good. wizzrobe has been using purely grabs to reaction tech chase, but that seems objectively worse than reacting with aerials, since using only grabs takes way more perfect reactions to build up the same amount of damage. is it that Gravy's system can't actually be done on reaction? has anyone other than gravy actually tried to implement this?

I have a very serious question. So... Input lag. I have been playing melee for about a year and a half now, and i am pretty technical. I always practiced on either a wii or gamecube, and i noticed no difference between the two. However, when I booted up Dolphin emulator about 3 weeks ago, I noticed that the inputs were happening instantaneously. I could now literally react with a Shine or Chaingrab fox with ganon. The muscle memory is the same, but the inputs are immediate. My question is: do they play tournaments on consoles with input delay, and if so, Is this (i think about 8 frames) lag normal? and would Playing dolphin mess me up?
@yungbisher

Were you playing on an LCD with your console?

I don't know. I tell you what: Next time I play on my computer i will plug it into the TV instead of the monitor, and this should give me the answer i need. Thanks!
@Cunt143
@Cunt143 8 лет назад
Thing is, the TV is probably your problem. The game usually has 3 frames of delay between an input and the action following the input and unless you use hacks that input delay stays with Dolphin. Of course, different TVs and monitors can increase the delay. If your TV has input lag you should consider buying a CRT (old tube TV), they're very cheap these days and have way less input lag.

why is uthrow better than dthrow for tech chasing?
@MrDevilsbabe
@MrDevilsbabe 9 лет назад
***** Not true according to this post. smashboards.com/threads/tech-chasing-like-a-man-complete-breakdown.382475/#post-18354373 dthrow is better until 50%, then uthrow. Better only in the sense the time between the first frame you can act and the time they hit the ground is longer. Not sure how DI was taken into account in that post. I don't think it was so I'll assume it's neutral until further testing.
@Wizzrobe
@Wizzrobe 9 лет назад
MrDevilsbabe I personally prefer d-throw at the really low percents, not sure why gravy prefers u-throw. I just know u-throw is usually better at later percents you have more time to position.

@MaestroCasts
@MaestroCasts 9 лет назад
will A consideration I want to add onto this discussion is that the dthrow animation is affected by weight, while the uthrow animation is not. So against space animals, the recovery for dthrow is very fast, while against another Falcon, dthrow's recovery is very slow. The recovery animation for uthrow is always the same, regardless of weight.

I think I heard Gravy say once that players freak out unnecessarily whenever people mention (nearly) frame-perfect tech. For example, sweet-spotting Falcon's knee is a three frame window, yet you see players landing them all the time, in all manner of situations. Power-shields, by comparison, have a four frame window. Definitely doable.
@UberTurtle12
