Except she hadn't planned for retirement...she was just beginning to, in her 50's which is far too late. The reality is that her and her husband spent every dime they ever earned rather than provide for their future and this is the end result.

Unfortunately it's only going to get worse, because they are raising the Social Security retirement age and as it is cost of living and inflation makes surviving on a fixed income extremely difficult not to mention medical expenses.

@@michealtull9033 The only age change they're contemplating is increasing the early claiming age which is a bad decision anyway. As for inflation, I battle that back on a daily basis, grabbing it by the throat and choking it out while I stare it dead in the eyes. Always paying extra for good insurance helps iron out "surprises" and saves in the long run. Besides, saving and investing from the start of your working career gives you options such as retiring as early as age 50...everything after that is just numbers on a calendar.

If everything goes great with the economy 401ks might be ace in the hole but then in 2008 a lot of people I worked with got wiped out . If Trump is reelected in 2020 things might turn around but until then people will continue to wind up on the streets. @@michealtull9033 Proposed changes are to move the early claiming age from 62 to 65 (a much better age as you then qualify for Medicare). The full retirement age will remain at age 67. We all went through the same recession, and recovery. Any near retiree that was 100% in stocks was foolish indeed but simply by riding out the market correction would be in great shape as we are. You talk of wages not keeping up with expenses, the reality is that those folks are over spending and it doesn't matter what income level they're at, that's the simple truth. Unlike most, I know from doing. I never look to politicians for anything but President Trump has been absolutely killing it, especially with his TCJA. I think he's wise enough to not mess with our medical system as capitalism yields the best results. Anytime government gets involved it just messes it up. We haven't been touched by something so transient as cancer, instead far more serious, long term and more expensive ailments that upended our lives multiple times. If/when cancer comes calling we'll handle it as we've always done, armed with good insurance, a hard won and huge emergency fund and our long term investments. Lastly, these people aren't victims. They worked and spent every dime they ever earned rather than save and invest for their future and are now living the future they planned. At least if they were honest about it they could help others by serving as a warning and encourage them not to make the same mistakes.

Solution...spend less than you make, save and invest from an early age. It's a simple as that.

We've been knocked down by life multiple times (far more than most, not as much as some) but each time I popped back up grabbed life by the throat and choked it out while glaring it dead in the eye. Our financial security is made up of 25 years of good choices and hard won savings with another 20 years to go and we'll keep at it. At our income level, there's no information or articles written about saving for retirement or how to plan taxes, I've had to figure it all our on my own and have discovered new truths that almost no one is aware of. But if you think it's kinder to NOT show that anyone CAN save and invest for a secure retirement and in fact they have incredible incentives to do so including building millions completely tax free, then you do you. This is why we need the social services that are offered in other countries like the UK and France. Healthcare expenses will bankrupt you no matter how much you save, especially if you don't have insurance. Financial education should start in the home but continue in school, just in case kids aren't taught the basics of life. Start saving early in life. If you want expensive things, save for it, instead of buying on credit.

When I was growing up the only homeless I used to see were those with family problems or other issues and the occasional hobo in search of a drink. That was a smart move. You owned your living space outright, and you didn’t have to worry about some landlord kicking you out or the bank foreclosing on your home. I don’t know if you already had property or if you had to rent a small piece of land to house your trailer, but even if you had to rent the land it’s still cheaper than renting a house or apartment. A friend of mine did something similar - after a divorce, he bought an RV and he lives there. He does have to rent space to park his RV, but it’s a lot cheaper than renting a house. Now that a lot of jobs are remote work, he can drive to another state and live there for a while.

You are correct it is not just given to you I don't know anybody that didn't fight for it. You have to fill out countless papers. See countless doctors for their approval. And then when you finally do get it you constantly have to go to their doctors to keep it.

Probably it depend what is your background but when I was young I was working at a textile factory with night shifts and that was very hard and I could do that job only because I was young. I also worked as a cleaner of public toilets. That's was not fun. I agree they have to improve their work condition and it seems things are getting worse and worse, but on the other hand I find young people are very lazy and dont want to work. @Julia A I was working in a call centre too and every second of my work was monitored. They were monitoring how many times I went to the toilet. I didn't mind since wage and benefits were good. 30 years ago in the factory was not so much different, I had to take care constantly of the machines and after coming back from the toilet I always found the machines stopped and light flashing. I have never been working in a place where I could chat to my colleagues or spending my time on my smartphone. But as soon as the wages is good and job is secure I didn't mind and after all I am at the workplace to work and not for doing my own business. Unfortunately with the globalization we are becoming more like third world countries. Hominini i am very much aware of that. Upon my return, I also took care of my ailing mom. Three years of homecare, followed by 2 years iin a nursing home. During home care, the universal health care system provided an assistant who came for daily bathing. When she needed an operation, the healthcare system provided free legal assistance to review the hospital bill to ensure that no inappropriate billing had occurred. I was told to not pay any hospital bill until it had been reviewed by health care legal department. The total bill amounted to 7500 Euros (about $8000 dollar) billed directly to the health care system, and of which we paid 1200 Euros (about $1400). For the nursing home, the hospital assisted in finding a place in a local nursing home with a excellent reputation. When my mom’s savings had been used up (by providing ba k account info) the government took over, collecting her pension, and filing her taxes. I was not expectied to deplete my own savings as I will need them later on. P,ease when you vote, vote for a candidate who will fight for medicare for all.

We pay higher taxes, but no one needs to fork extra funds to buy a lousy healthcare plan with minimal coverage that is not even guaranteed. If you lose your job, you are still covered. Companies don’t have to be in the business of providing health plans. People freak out when they hear tax increase. Doing some calculations helps provide some clarity. Imagine you earn gross income of $25,000 on which you pay 15% taxes (=3,750), that leaves you a net income of 21,250. Imagine you buy a health plan for $600 per month, costing you $7200 per year. Money not in your pocket = $3750 + $7200 = $10950. Now imagine that your taxes are raised to 25%, the amount is now $6250. Net income is $18750. You don’t need to buy health insurance since you are now covered through a medicare for all type of plan. By paying $2500 more in taxes you no longer have to buy a $7200 health plan. And now you are covered in case of illness or accident. You change jobs? You are covered. You lose your job? You are covered. I believe it pays to look at your own situation and run some numbers. @@jamesmurphy9105 I think this is a wonderful idea. The only snag is the American culture is very individualistic, and roommates are only acceptable for young adults at university. Heck, adults over 25 that are still living with family members are looked down upon in the US (versus in other cultures). Other cultures (like UK and Ireland) don’t see any issue with having lodgers/roommates.

Yes unfortunately property taxes is one of the main reason people lose their homes. If they can’t pay the property taxes, the state or county can seize their home. A couple I know lost their house in that way. The house was mortgage-free for years, but when the property taxes kept increasing, they couldn’t afford it, and they couldn’t sell the house in time to move elsewhere (real estate market was bad at the time), so the county seized their home.

There are many options available for those zeroing in on retirement that have inexpensive living. I agree with large cities not being good options but disagree with you leaving out southern states as being choices. Rural Texas, New Mexico or Arizona would be excellent choices for inexpensive living in retirement. And let's not leave out foreign lands. Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, the Philippines and many countries offer low crime, low taxes, US friendly population/govt and inexpensive living. I moved to Europe 13 years ago and to this day couldn't be happier. $120/mo for a large 2-bdrm apt in a 60s well built 2 apt building w/garage, elec was $10.35 last month, water and trash is fixed at $11.06, internet $14.60/mo, health insurance under $200/mo. Living large on SS and a small pension.

Just to be clear, I work long hours, but also have fun! I dedicate 4 hours a week for ice hockey, and usually have at least my sundays for fun, relaxation (I call them mini vacations 😊). Sometimes I take my little aluminium boat out on the weekend, cast a line, and crack a cold one with a buddy. I suppose I dont need a whole lot. I never been much into the bar, or partying for that matter. Been out of country(europe, southeast asia, australia), the usa is still the best place to live and work. One thing I'd like to do however is see more states here at home. This last summer I took a week off and went to wyoming for fly fishing and camping, sight seeing. Hope everyone has a good christmas with family. I know I will!

One other thing. Many boomers, at least in my circle, have had to be caregivers to sick or dying parents. Because people are living longer and longer. I’ve had to do it twice. It meant financial hardship because we relied on my income as well. But, it was necessary. Our lousy medical system in this country means people are sent home sick and dying, and can’t take care of themselves, and there is no after care. No relative of mine was going to end up in some dirty depressing nursing home as long as I was breathing!

Any of them (or their sisters) could've been helping that day. But he went quick and as painless as you can go without drugs..... His wife wasn't so lucky. He had over 800 acres, raised live stock, various stocks and bonds, and a two million life insurance policy. He was a veteran and the most knowledgeable, capable, and awesome man. He came from nothing (depression) and raised his children with plenty through hard work. He gave all 8 children land while living, All but one sold it quickly and only 2 of them used the money for anything good. All children were left an equal share of everything. Still they squabbled til there was nothing. Then, they managed to dissolve Meme's living will provision, presenting papers my grandmother swore she never signed (only 1 of my uncles didn't participate). They kicked her out of her own home that she'd raised them in, and sold what little was left of the remaining farm. This went on for years. When they found out she had liquid assets (a member of her church was helping her find a small place in town) they had her declared unable to take care of herself. My Mother and 3 of her sisters and 1 brother provided false testimony. Then these 5 siblings squabbled over who'd be the power of attorney til there was nothing left. They just stuck Meme in the nursing home until she died. None of them would take care of her and she died before I had the means. All of them but one have ended up this way, claiming their daddy loved money so much he was never home... My uncle move back after he was married and had his first son. He managed to buy up nearly 200 acres and the old home place. He became a farmer. He and my aunt invite every one each year for Christmas eve lunch. None of his siblings ever come, but some of us cousins do. We'll attend this evening. Only my uncle and 1 of my aunts even stayed married the first time. I'm certain that NO amount of life insurance would help any of them.....

My husband's best friend has only the big toe on his left foot. His biological mother and father left him alone, in a freezing efficiency, for two days, as a toddler. The neighbor broke in when the crying became continuous. He was soiled, wearing a crawler, and only one sock. The frostbitten toes were not saveable. Friends, co-workers, and acquaintances all have similar and varied experiences. While I've heard of individuals like yourself who've taken on the care of their parents, I've only personally only met 2. My father's brother's ex-wife took care of her mother to keep from loosing her mother's house (that my ex aunt lives in) to the nursing home. And a coworker who took care of her widowed mom just because she loved her (there was no gain). You are the exception.... Not the rule. We say 'boomer this and that' because we have good reason. I'm fairly certain it was public school indoctrination, because I (and my peers) received a heavy dose as well. This is the only way so many people across varied upbringing and economic backgrounds could behave so similarly. I (like most of my peers) grew out of the selfish, entitled, communist foolishness.... I watched my mother burn through half a million dollars in 3 months with no asset to show. There's NO amount of life insurance that will help any of these people, and their children will be left to clean up.

@@ashleyhavoc1940 I had bad parents too that did same with my grandfather's estate. You just have to get past it and lead your life. The anger is not good for you or your health. And yes, sometimes you need to cut toxic people out of your life. The less drama the better.

Nothing has not changed other than weak people who can do nothing but give up and complain that life to so tough for them. The brass ring is still there but you have to really want it. I did and i got it. As far as jobs are concerned you need a marketable skill. The good paying jobs are out there but you need a STEM degree and then you can start at 6 figures plus a year.

These people rent because they can't afford to buy a house. "Own your home" means having no mortgage on it. If you still have mortgage on your house, you do not own that house. You will end up just like the renters! No one plan to fail, they just failed to plan. Just like the recommendation in the video. Save, save and save. And also live within your needs(shelter and foods). The rest is wants. Stay away from them!

Collect SS now. It equals all out in the long run. Your checks are just smaller because your collecting over a longer period of time. This waiting to your full retirement age to collect 100% is a scam. I used to think the same as you till someone told me.

The workers in the SS offices literally laugh whenever someone calls in to delay their benefit, after they hang up, of course.

Nothing to save! Wages are not livable, everyday costs too high!

When I was a teenager I worked in a bakery & coffee shop. One of the other employees was a woman in her 40s/50s, Jo. She lived in a tiny apartment and seemed to not have a cent to her name. She was so sad and downtrodden. I was terrified to wind up like her so I established IRA and non-IRA brokerage accounts in my 20s, always worked full-time-plus, lived very frugally, and saved and invested aggressively and consistently. I never earned a great salary or worked for a firm that offered a 401(k). Fast-forward 40 years and I'm now 66, retired, and have zero debt and no financial worries. I often think about Jo and wonder what became of her. She's one of the primary reasons I am well off today.
