Wendy Pratt shares a rancher's experience to an age-old relationship of grazing animals and grassland ecosystems. She shows how utilizing the planet's naturally occurring cycles helps heal our world plus how one individual can make a difference. Wendy is a fourth-generation cattle rancher near Blackfoot. She advocates for regenerative grazing and for blurring the lines between urban and rural viewpoints. She writes a ranch blog and can be found at The Pastoral Muse. She and her husband Mark have three children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Absolutely brilliant video, thanks for this! This is the kind of education that needs to make the mainstream media because right now it's far more about how going 'vegan is better' and so much false information being promoted.

these vegan clowns blow my mind. they truly act like animals utilize land that could be used for something other than ranching cattle or other animals. They use land that couldn't possibly be used for anything else. and on top of it all the cows are actually carnivores. They only eat grass to feed an animal living in their end stomachs. They eat grass to ferment a liquid to feed to abomasums living in their stomach. They then eat the abomasum living in their stomach for their sustenance.

@@TrevorHamberger Rather than calling them "these vegan clowns", talk to them. They are likely doing so because they believe it's the best thing they can do. Turns out, maybe it's not. As Wendy said, if they choose not to eat meat then that's their choice, but if they care about the environment they need to respect this process.

I was surprised the other day when CNN Sanjay Gupta asked Ted Turner in an interview if he can become vegan to help with climate change; and he calls himself a doctor! The media needs to stop vilifying cows; Cows are not the problem. It is how we manage them is the problem. The media is spreading ignorance.

Any botanist knows this, yes in addition grass stores more co2 in the soil enriching and forming carbonic acid that help leach some of the minerals. Yes full water cycle can apply

Thank you, this proves the Creators Word and love for alle living creatures: "And to every beast of the earth and to every fowl of the air and to every thing that moves upon the earth, in which there is a living soul, I have given all green grass for food; and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1).

As a former working cowboy and a long-time environmental geographer, I'll say this: you're right on the mark...KUDOS! The problem isn't grazing animals, it's how they are managed by humans. Thanks for spreading the word. Happy Trails

What in our anatomy makes you think we are carnivores? We are most likely herbivores that switched to an omnivorous diet out of necessity. Our omnivorous diet is killing us. Societies that eat the most animal products have a higher prevalence of heart disease and obesity.

If a cattle operation is introduced to a grassland, then it is disrupting the native wildlife, including ruminants, creating health in that ecosystem. The keystone predators are culled to avoid losses on the ranch and the native ruminants are also culled to avoid competition with the invasive beef cattle and because after we kill off the natural predators, "we need to hunt them to protect the balance of nature" (never mind that we caused the problem by culling the keystone species or that human hunters actually don't replace the native predators functionally; not behaving the same and thus not promoting biodiversity the same way ). If the cattle operation is introduced in an environment that is not already grassland then, the land needs to be manipulated to grow grass, again destructive, invasive species.
