Laura and Grant, I knew a man who had a heavy equipment business. His son unscrewed a hydraulic line with dump bed up and dad leaning across the frame. Grieved himself to death with self-blame. Please work safe. Love ya'll in Mississippi.

Laura, nice to see you getting into a little of the muck though not to much in this case. A couple of things. First, NEVER get under something held up ONLY by hydraulics, if the hydraulics fail for some reason or if someone accidentally bumps the control lever, you are CRUSHED and most likely injured if not dead. Put a couple heavy duty jack stands under that implement before you get under it. Second, you should wipe down at least the end of the grease zerks as if you don't you'll be pushing a little bit of dirt along with the grease into the bearing. Third, for sort of an amusing thought, in my day we didn't have that very nice electric powered grease gun, we had to hand pump the grease into every zerk. How much more fun would that job be if you did it with out the powered grease gun?

Never trust the hydraulics when your working under a piece of equipment. Always brace it!
@RosaStringWorks

I don't want to sound like a safety nut, but be careful getting under anything held up by hydraulics. If a hose bursts or some other minor part breaks it can fall really fast. It is good practice to have some sort of stand or at least something to take the load should a failure occur. Better than your head taking the load. Been there done that a lot.

to be honest, modern tractors have systems that lock in place the implement, even if you press the buttons to lower it it won't work, but in fact it's better to be safe than sorry...

People who rely on hydraulics sometimes do not need to worry about growing old. Having the over head hoist attached with a slack chain, 2 ton can turn into 5 ton in a foot fall. Safety stands are like soap, cheap and more people should use.

Dan VonBehren: You can't do your "step 2" until you loosen the grease gun cylinder first. That is because you need to be able to suck in some air to make it possible to pull the plunger back. Think of the grease gun as a very large syringe, you can't pull back the plunger with out letting air or fluid in. That is why, at first, she couldn't pull the plunger back. I do kind of like the idea of removing the battery though.

Lee Barnhart is absolutely right.. You should either block the implement or at least use the chain hoist to add an extra level of protection while you are in harms way. Way to many farmers are accidentally killed each year by not following basic safety guidelines. That being said; I love your posts and looking forward to seeing many more of them. Nice to see the local area that you live in. My grandmother was born in Hastings and one of her brothers in Sutton so not all that far from where you are.

Nice video as always! Helpful hint (I see others have already said it): wipe the dirt off of the zerk fittings first before snapping on the grease gun connector. Any dirt and abrasive that is on the outside of the zerk will get pushed into the lubricant and will end up inside causing more wear. As others said, get some jack stands to put under these heavy implements when working under them. We don't mean to nag and are not running you down! We want to see you all safe and happy because we like you a lot! I see that Grant tried to turn around in another low spot as I saw and mentioned on another video when he did the same with his truck while pulling a trailer? Always pull or back straight ahead out of the low spot First before turning on more flat level ground so you won't plow the front end under and get stuck! Keep on making the videos! Love your smiles and laughs! They make my day in this gloomy gray boring winter! We love you all!

For those grease zerks that won’t take grease take out the nipple and screw in the hose from a porta power that will bust up most clogged places that won’t take grease remember to wire the hose around something close so if the threads pull you won’t get hit with the hose try that saves a bunch of work most times

Two o0bservations: 1. the battery operated grease gun with refill grease in a tube and a flexible grease hose is a lot easier than the old hand pump grease guns that had a metal greasing tube and you refilled the gun by hand out of a 5 gallon bucket of grease and made sure you had no big air pockets in the gun, then you had to hand pump the grease into the zerts. 2. You stated Grant's truck had recently been ":DELETED"!

NEVER go underneath something that could fall on you - that's 'Farming 101', taught by my dad over 50 years ago... clean the grease fittings before trying to add more grease... powered greasers are convenient, but they cause more seal failures than they're worth, because they can't tell when a grease cavity is full - a lever-operated gun (or pistol-grip) will pressure up just enough to be noticed, without popping a seal...

Grant I saw the neatest tool on RU-vid last week. Its a tool that frees up a stuck zert! Its seriously freed up like 13 of 13 frozen zerts on a 1950's old mini motor grater. He charged a cartage with a penetrating oil and forced it into the zert by taping a small piston with a hammer and in just a min. the zert was fully functional and taking grease. It was so simple, it was so easy, and it it worked. I know we've all broke off the zerts while trying to replace frozen ones. No fun and a 20 mins project takes all day (if you are lucky). When I saw you greasing, you made me think of it and it would sure be handy to have around a professional barn! Check RU-vid for "Diesel Creek". If you are interested. I would be in your shoes with all the greasing a Professional farmer must do.

Laura, get one of the Lock-n-Lube tips for the grease gun. Once the tip grabs onto the Zerk fitting, the only way it will come off is to push in on the paddle. Not sure why Milwaukee the Lock-n-Lube from the factory. Oh, in the second speed setting on the Milwaukee gun, the gun develops 12,000 psi pressure. In the event of a Zerk not taking grease, remove it, then install a new one and leave to old one to soak in kerosene. 95% of the time, after a soak they free right up. Last thing, never mention the work DELETED on a on-road vehicle. It's a dirty word to some, others like to tattle.
@charlesb4267
@charlesb4267 3 года назад
I don't know what equipment you've worked on but rarely if ever is it the case that an undamaged zerk itself is jammed up with dirt and nothing else but instead its the drilled hole into a bushing for example that is completely packed with dirt and it backed up all the way to the zerk fitting. Taking the zerk out and using a small twist drill by hand to work the dirt out all the way to the pin bushing can work in some cases and if not its having to disassemble the unit being greased to clean out the grease passage way as per what Grant was eluding to in the beginning of the video. Obviously if the zerk is visibly damaged from the outside from being struck by a rock etc, it needs to be replaced or if the small ball is missing internally to prevent dirt from entering or grease from escaping which again is typically from external damage to the zerk fitting.
