The #greatalleghenypassage is 150 miles of beautiful rail-trail from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Cumberland, Md. We rode just a small section of it for this overnight video.
We took the following precautions to ensure our safety and that of those around us. We carried all water and food needed for the trip since all water and bathroom facilities are turned off. We used food already at home and made no extra trips to the grocery store before or during the trip.
We accessed the trail directly from our house and did not drive to any trailheads or access points. We wore our buffs at any town crossings or when we saw - very few - other trail users. We choose a cold day/night to ride and camp when few would be using the trail. Those we did encounter while riding we stayed distant from.

I loved so many bits of this: When you left the trail to study a hillside of emerging trillium blossoms; your visit to the artist decorating ruins with her mosaics; even your showing us what you were having for dinner. It was a wonderful 20 minute work break for me. Thank you!

I was going to say the same thing. I loved it more than the previous video on this section. I think to shows how the little things can bring us joy. It doesn't have to be the cool bridge. Knowing that the trail crosses roads, passes through towns, you don't see much of that. I like these outskirts and the cool things they bring.

Nice video. Thanks! The little flower is called spring beauty and the tuber is edible (good to know for apocalypse 😃). The other flowers, blue bells ,are beautiful and fragrant in bloom. There is a rail trail near Athens OH where the hillside is completely covered in them. So beautiful.

This is now on my list! My friend did it alone last year and she loved it. Her husband met her at the end of her trek in Georgetown with policemen saying she was under arrest as a joke. He filmed it. Haha

Nice video! Great job of narrating. I did notice while editing you flip-flopped the town's once.

I’ve spent lot of time on the Montour Trail and have developed an appreciation for the old railroad right aways that morphed into our national rails to trails system. What a treasure! I’ve ridden from Little Boston to Ohiopyle . It was awesome. I’ve ridden the section of the C&O to Harpers Ferry along the Potomac River. Incredible! I’m planning on riding the complete trip in late August or early September. I’ll reach out to you as things develop. Nice job on all of the videos you’ve put together. Thanks

Enjoyed this type of format. You should do more like it. I dig the Surly with the bikepacking setup. Not something you normally see on the GAP or Katy

@@gaslandrights1745 We've been on it but chose to stick with the C&O for the video. A bit too short to have it's own video but we do recommend it to all our C&O tour riders!

We are riding from DC to Pittsburgh....If we bring a filter and bags, how much water is along the route? Streams/creeks etc...? Water is SO heavy! 8 lbs per gallon. Woof.
@NobleInventionBikeTouring
@NobleInventionBikeTouring 4 года назад
There is water pretty much regularly along the route. I typically take 3 bottles and just fill up as I see water.

Great videos. Was planning to ride the GAP/C&O from Pittsburg to DC in a few weeks time (mid-October). I’ll be self-contained, camping along the route. Any reason to think this will be a problem? Saw that you took a lot of water. Given the world of Covid, is there public water or should I expect to filter/treat?
@NobleInventionBikeTouring
@NobleInventionBikeTouring 4 года назад
You should be fine. I always carry some back up with me, but between public water and towns where you can buy drinks, you'll be fine.

We plan to have regular videos posting in 2021. We really enjoy putting these together and hearing about everyone's experiences on the trails. Thanks for asking!

In your opinion, can someone get to Cumberland in one day? I'm planning this now for next year.
@NobleInventionBikeTouring

If you mean from Pittsburgh to Cumberland in a day? Yes, people have done so but it's a very long 150 miles, much slower than on pavement.

Along the trail near Perryopolis there is a primitive camping area called Roundbottom. No bathrooms, water, or other facilities.
