Great British Car Journey Museum: Walkaround! 

My uncle Giles owned Gilbern. He has passed away now. He went to making boats then electric boxes out of fiberglass .

As a 60 year old I remember lots of these cars being common place on our roads but I really like your enthusiasm and great knowledge of them. I'm glad there is a place for the millennials to go and see these. They were all individually very interesting designs back then.

It is quite interesting to see so many, various british cars. In Slovakia you can see just a few old MGs or Triumphs on classic car meetings.

I was there the weekend before you filmed this, and can confirm it was an actually a most splendid of splendid days. Even the non interested in cars Missus found it fascinating! All topped off by a lovely bacon batch in the caf', and then a magnificent drive in the Austin 1300GT, identical to the one I owned back in 1975/6. Absolutely gorgeous. Wish I'd never sold mine now. All in all, a highly recommended and most worthy visit.

A wonderful collection of cars. But boy, does it make me feel old to see many of them in a museum.

At 0:48 the Arriol-Johnston make had an unusual claim to fame that I just became aware of yesterday. The make was the first car used on the continent of Antarctica. It was not very successfully used by the 1907 Shackleton expedition. It was recorded in 1909 as being shipped from New Zealand to "the English Museum". Much earlier than the more successful 1963 Australian made VW Beetle that got the number plate Antarctica 1 . Both the VW and the Arriol-Johnston had the advantage of air cooled engines to try to cope with Antarctic cold. Both of these significant cars seem to have disappeared.

Oh my god this place brings back memories,my dad had loads of these cars when I was growing up including a Hillman avenger,morris traveller,an allegro,mk2 astra,a Austin Atlantic,a mini clubman,cortina mk3 nd a a40 among others,i my self have owned a mk1 Mondeo,,a Vauxhall chevrette and a mk2 astra,we owned ,loads of classic cars between us,don't see any of them on the road these days,cant remember the last time I saw Sierra or a cavalier,let alone an avenger,those were the days

That wonderful barn found Austin reminds me of Arthur, the family transport of 'Worthy', which was knocking around Newcastle Emlyn long before "oily rag" became a thing.

My family had a Dodge 1500 (Avenger) in Buenos Aires in the 80s. (We are Argie-Americans) and I LOVED it sooooo much. Wish I had it now in NYC. Lovely little RWD treat. It sold here under Dodge as well. Saw one in Long Island, same yellow color as our old one.

My wife and I used Vanden Plas Princesses as our our wedding cars. Lovely for photos and to travel inside. Black one for the church and a white one for the evening! Posh

We went last week and spent a very happy couple of hours there. The surprising thing was just how many of the cars on show I have driven or owned! I went home feeling quite old....

Drove Avengers as police cars in the 80's, amazing cars, loved them so much I bought myself an Avenger Estate.

Very nice, the only thing missing is an old typewriter. I found a couple at the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Club Museum on the weekend and thought of you Lol.

Wow! as a 76 year old, I drove some of these cars that made it to Australia. Brings back memories of great drives with low traffic and stunning women sitting beside me.

Very interesting Tour Ian, thanks, it’s somewhere I’d like to visit for sure, so many cars there from the 70’s/80’s and even 90’s that I remember being driven around, parked in public car parks etc, and am sure many our age and older would remember too. I’d love a drive in a Maxi or a Leyland Princess, 2 cars I’ve never even sat in!

Thanks for this Hubnut. The coverage was professional and in depth as always. I watched two others on the the same museum and was frustrated by one because he ignored the older stuff, and the other "clown" didn't know his makes despite the signs and all we saw was his face. Happy New Year from NZ.

The plague of the alternator has finally reached Scotty this weekend. Fortunately I anticipated this, and took off Whiskey ‘s one. This was a replacement one, has date stamp of 2017, so could last for sometime.

My wife had a Maestro City X when I first met her. I seem to remember that it had a ditigal clock with a vacuum fluorescent display, where the base model City just had a blanking plate. All the luxury! It didn't have seatbelts in the back either, it was originally sold a couple of months before they became a legal requirement.

Arroll-Johnson built the very first, dedicated, car factory in the UK at Heathfield, near Dumfries. The one you showed in the video was probably built there, Ian.

A nice tour Ian, if traveling can be normal again, this is definitely a museum to visit on a trip from the Netherlands.

I did a museum tour back in September - Coventry Transport, Brooklands, Gaydon and GBCJ. I have to say that my favourite was the last one. It is brilliantly curated and the cars were a joy to see and learn about. Thanks for introducing me to it at your first visit.

I went on it's second day....was very impressed and need to go back in 2022.....At the time i owned an SD3 but took my R8 there and it got a lot of attention

Hillman Imp - stalks sprouting out of the dashboard. In 1969 - 1976 at the back of the house we lived in was a garage with an Imp permanently parked in there and I'd forgotten those stalks that it had !

Love that Jensen and the later CV8, a ale of mine, the late John Baker was the service manager there at some point he restored his Gordon Keeble there! Now they are rare cars.

Enjoyed that "look around" Ian. Thought I saw an E-type lurking in the background somewhere. Pity there's not enough room for a few more classics; Consuls, Zephyrs, Zodiacs, Westminsters, Jag Mk10s, Ventoras, Sterlings and the like. Great showing though, nonetheless.

Loved this so much many thanks for doing this video,I cannot believe how many of those older cars I have personally been involved with over the years,i even gave a mate drive lessons in his first car, which was an Austin seven,i cannot remember if he took his test in it but someone gave him the car, back then, But the first car i ever went in, was the 1936 hillman, that my dad hand-painted, i think a grey colour.,thanks again .

Thanks Ian, nice to get your commentary going round the museum. I had to keep our eldest (she's 4) occupied when we went so I didn't get to have my usual dawdle about or use the audio tour. I can't wait to go back, thing I like the most is most cars have actually seen use not just been museum pieces (although the box fresh mini gives an interesting comparison). I wish they were closer, as a mechanic slightly bored with modern stuff I'd jump at the chance to learn classics!

Visited a couple of months ago off the back of your earlier video Ian. Lots to see and the layout of the hall is really well done with the period posters and everything. Many of the cars have an interesting history, be it one owner from new or kept in the same family for 40 years, that type of thing. Chatting to the guys, it seems they’ve aimed to give it a look of the motor shows from the time. Certainly reminds me of the ones I visited, such as the NEC, in the seventies. They’ve big plans for expansion, the exhibits are a little cramped already in places and those plans include a motorcycle museum section in addition to the cars. Highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in cars or who wishes to take a trip down memory lane, either with cars you’ve owned yourself or those of your parents. I’m giving it a deserved ‘plug’ as I think it’s important we get behind initiatives like this, especially when they’re done so well. Intend to revisit and drive some of the cars next year and look into membership.

Encyclopaediac knowledge as always, looks a great place to visit!

I believe that the Jensen 541 had the 4 litre OHV engine of the Sheerline, but with multiple carbs. I always loved cars, 77 as I write this and have owned an ISO Rivolta, XK 150, Mk 2 Jags, and Silver Shadow.

What a great collection, and so many memories as well. My car mad Granddad owned way too many of these vehicles. But did I miss a Jowett? I thought they had one, then again I thought they had a Bristol Brigand (An amazing vehicle, that spare wheel storage) but haven't seen that. Must be my mind playing tricks with me in old age. Great video Ian, and well done on not mentioning the infamous line when introducing the Scimitar.

Wonderful collection, but also a bit sad. The British managed to kill off their entire industry in just a few years having had such a magnificent history

I'd say the Austin 7 is the British model T. The true first car for the masses. Only 1 car i have owned (Jag XJ) . I didn't spot a Range Rover Classic, a must-have car for a museum like that.

Maxi gearchanges were fine after the first couple of years when they changed from a cable to rod system.

I had one of those lowlight Morris Minor convertibles when I was at secondary school in 1971.[We could get our licence at 15 in those days in NZ].Great fun.Same colour too.My dad bought it for probably about $100.Had a 1950 Ford Prefect before that.I think it cost $60.The battery was old so had to use the crank handle to start it.

An additional benefit of living quite near the museum is that you get to see a lot more classic cars than usual, due to people visiting in their own vehicles 👍🏻

Great collection! I'll just comment on a couple. The Vanguard is a Phase 1A, with the earlier beetle back body and the later Phase 2 grille. The Wolseley/Riley 1500/1.5 was intended to replace the Minor but didn't. I've heard them described as the world's only 4 door 2 seater. In Australia they gained fins and some length, and became the Austin Lancer or Morris Major, and finally the Morris Major Elite with 1.6 litres. It's a shame one didn't put itself your way when you were over here. Cheers.

I suspect this museum is very quickly going to become a default 'go to' meet for classic car groups, as well as a regular 'drive-to' destination. Great video, and really whets the appetite to visit in person.

They've really done a wonderful job with this museum. Also, never spotted the AE86 Esprit lights before!

I do like the extensive use of large graphics, logos & photographs surrounding the vehicles here (I try & do something similar with my 1/43 scale models!).

Good day sir. That was a walk through a time machine. I saw many of my Matchbox toy cars well represented in real life. I did find that my favorite 60’s car (P5B Coupe) seemed to be missing 😕 Thanks for the fascinating tour. Cheers.

yes the mgb gt was indeed tundra, my favourite 70s shade
