Follow our simple tips for crate training your Great Dane to make it a quick and easy process. Making the crate comfortable and placing it in an appropriate location are two of the most common mistakes. Never use force to get your dog into the crate as it should be a place that they feel safe in.

I can not thank you enough. Got my dane puppy last night and he was so scared of the crate. After watching this I made it much more comfortable, moved it, put up the partition, praised him when he went in on his own, left it open and held him there with my hand and we are much closer now! Thank you.

Thank you for making this video. I have two Great Danes and am going to go back to work. My dogs are two years old. I need to really learn everything there is to know about this issue.
@GreatDaneCare

You're welcome Daphne! Do they get into trouble now when you leave them home alone? At 2, most are past their mischievous puppy days so you may need to focus more on house training then crate training.

@@GreatDaneCare Thanks for the reply, you really made my day and satisfied what I would call my "gut feeling" about this. They are so much more chilled out now than at puppy time. I've been leaving the house and closing the front door for short periods of time, less than 5 minutes and I usually open the door to find noses looking for me. I've heard that if I can get to the point of leaving them for 40 minutes, they should be good for a few hours.
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
Just keep practicing extending those time periods that you leave them alone. Make sure to also leave behind plenty of toys, and when possible, exercise them before you leave so they've released any pent up energy.

Thanks for the great info. Question: I'm debating between the XL vs XXL crate ...which do you recommend for a 2 year old male Great Dane. I see you have the XL, but I didn't see you dog standing inside. On the other hand, the XXL seems excessively big, which may allow for potty corners. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!!!
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
For what it's worth we'll probably get the XXL whenever we replace our current one. Being that your Dane is full grown (or close to it), I'd be surprised if they try to relieve themselves in the crate. They're able to hold it longer at that age and shouldn't have too much extra space to even want to attempt it in the first place.

Just got a Dane today! We had puppies cry all night when we got them, but our new Dane, just sat and felt at home... didn't cry at all. We thought he's mute! Hahaha but he isn't. He just doesn't make a fuss, planning to get a crate soon!

Very helpful video! I always put a puppy pad in my dog's crate for accidents but now I know that will slow her potty training so thank you! I do have one question, I have a great dane puppy and I'm looking for a good brand of food for her, any suggestions?

We use Wellness Large Breed, but there are several decent brands of kibble out there.

Do u have a video on how to get your did to stop jumping on your door to get in? I would prefer a bark. Or ringing the door bell

Your video was great for inside but I'm talking outside. I live in a large farm where my Dane can play. She has a huge, heated shed can hang out in. When she wants in she jumps in my house door. She is getting heavier and is starting to damage it. I don't always gear her. I would prefer her to bark. Installed she barks only when she is in the house. Not outside the house. She doesn't always want to come back in right away.

Great videos-we are learning so much! Quick question-should we crate our puppy at night? We’re currently are but I’m curious at what point we should start leaving him out. He is 4 months old, already potty trained and partially crate trained-(voluntarily goes in when told to). Should we be letting him sleep elsewhere? Thank you!

Congratulations! I'd recommend an XL/XXL crate so that your Dane never grows out of it. Most run around 45" tall x 35" wide x 54" long. You can find a recommended one and more info about them here - greatdanecare.com/crate

Great tips if and when I get another dog. We had 2 dogs that died and our chow died just a few days after our Lab, GS, Dobie mix died. They were both 14 years old and it's hard to get another. I had a male Blue Great Dane that lived for 12 years.

Okay I have read a lot on your site and watched a ton of your videos. And they are very helpful. I am picking up a pup here in a month. I know you say that the pad isnt a good idea, but if I dont have anyone available to let him out while I'm at work would it still be acceptable as long as I work with him all other hours? I'm trying to weigh my options and I know it may be a little longer process

Hey, how do you train your dog to always stay calm all times?
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
No dog is calm 100% of the time, but you can encourage calm behavior by not giving them any attention when they are being crazy, jumping, etc... Most dogs grow calmer as they age, so you'll need to show a little extra patience while they're puppies.

my pup was doing really well potty training outside of the crate before crate training, and now he want come out of the crate to potty especially in the mornings he will sit there and potty in the crate and he is literally right beside the door???? help me out please!
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
It's likely that you're giving them too much space inside the crate. Unless it's an emergency, they won't go potty in the crate if they have to sit/lie in it. Also, try taking them outside to go potty more frequently so they have more opportunities to go in the right location.

The two options usually boil down to adopting from a shelter or getting one through a breeder. This article has some details about finding a breeder -> greatdanecare.com/pick-great-dane-breeder/

So how do I reverse what I did??? 😩 I put pee pads in the crate so now my dog is in the habit of doing his business in crate.
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
Use/get a divider to limit the amount of space in the crate. It should only be large enough to allow them to comfortably lie down and will lower their desire to relieve themselves in the crate. Secondly, you'll need to be very diligent for a while in taking them outside to relieve themselves in the correct location. Use treats, attention, other positive reinforcement to re-teach them that this is the correct location.

What do you do if when you leave she destroys an bedding in crate??
@GreatDaneCare
@GreatDaneCare 5 лет назад
There are a number of potential causes, but it's most likely that the destructive behavior is due to pent-up energy or boredom. Try to provide more time for exercise and better toys to keep her entertained.
@coffeegirl697
@coffeegirl697 5 лет назад
Thank you, I do freeze Kong filled toys for her and give her chew toy. I also forgot to mention that she drools like a faucet in there. Be cause she has eaten her morning meal was afraid to exercise her because of the bloat that I was warned about. How long after she eats is a good waiting time before I exercise her? I really liked your video and information, we are already doing walking games:) I really appreciate your advice!😊
