The Great Egret visits these waters just once a year during their fall migration. I have only ever seen them here in this part of the lake for the last few years I have observed them. They are only here for a few weeks before moving on to continue their migration.
When I film, I am doing so at great distances. I really push my camera and my lens to its limit. As I am doing so, staring through the viewfinder to focus on my subject, I sometimes miss some crucial details about what the lens is capturing. For instance in this video, you will see that the Great Egret is on a log moving around. What I didn't see while I was filming the scene was the turtles on the same log. The Great Egret was trying to walk across the log and actually knocked one turtle off and into the lake. I never saw the turtles there as I started to reposition the camera. After the camera was reset and I was recording again, I noticed during editing that the Great Egret actually stood on the back of the turtle next to the one it just knocked off.
I just didn't see those crazy turtles there or else I might have gotten a better video of that experience. It was a pleasant surprise and quite a delight when I came across the footage during the editing process. Sometimes you just never know what ya got until you get to editing.
Until the next one, Cheers!
