In this NEW series historian Tino Struckmann will travel through time and visit many of the known and unknown forts, castles and fortresses that shaped the history of warfare.
The evolution of modern warfare from the stone castles to the Atlantic wall and hidden cold war underground forts. We will visit the places where key technological developments of warfare took place, from the first steel dome turret to the amazing star forts of Holland and Denmark.
We dive into the fortresses who fought and served in WW1 and WW2 and dispel many of the myths about those wars. The lessons learned from the Franco/Prussian wars and how they were implemented for the next war, and how lessons from WW1 was used to improve forts and bunker designs for WW2.

But as they found out with the Maginot line, having a fixed front line means the enemy can just go around you and if direct breaching would cost too many casaulties, they can just cut off your supplies and leave you to wither on the vine, kind of like the allies did with the Pacific islands during WW2

OI! Struckmann...... point of order - when the vikings raided lindisfarne we did have fortified towns and forts left over from the romans and still in use. we also still had hill forts and just down the coast a .bit is Banburgh Castle which was in there as a fortified seat of the local lord from the saxon invasion and Durham was a fortified town along with York, chester, manchester, london and so on. it took a thousand years to catch up with what the romans were doing while Jesus was sweeping up the wood shavings at his dads workshop. it took even longer to re invent the roman war machine though. and its crew served weapons. they even went backwards and reverted to chainmail. otherwise carry on that man.
@tinostruckmann
@tinostruckmann 3 года назад
Alright point, I should have said castles, but the real stone castle construction did take a halt after the Romans left and until the Normans arrived, it was really after that the real large stone castle building spree began. But I am going to the UK to look at what the Romans built and the 1500 years of castles after that. Ill get it right in the end:-)

@@tinostruckmann Got to defend my people's from being called mud hut dwellers. We were but it was posh mud not your common or garden variety. we did have stone defences in some areas but what you would call a castle are more the hill forts you see all over Europe which were topped with timber Palisades. But the rings of concentric banks and ditches with gates at Salisbury or maidan castle even took the Romans a while to conquer. Bebbanburg stood where banburgh is and that was a timber and stone, 'castle'. The main difference is the Romans learnt to glue the rocks together probably from the Etruscans but the bronze age cultures built large fortifications the Hittites for example. They stapled their rocks together as did the Egyptians. There's a medieval bridge an hour up from me that is built on top of a Roman ford.the ford is bigger than the bridge so you can see how it was made. Dressed stone slabs stapled with iron and lead and glued with concrete. 2000 years old and still viable. But then what did the roman's ever do for us. Carpe jugulum.

very impressive stuff. it seems to be necessary to send this danish guy in the turret some litres of wd-40 or ballistol. it looks strange that at one point he keep that enormous thing working and shoot it from time to time and at the other point he forget to clean the barrel, the breech and all the surroundings from time to time a little bit . . . the remains from blackpowder shooting are agressive to the barrel and breech metal

Norway became independent 1905 (My great great Grandad Gustaf V was not amused but still had to play diplomat and give the new king a few little gits... like making him a Knight of the Seraphim. Mind you My great Grandad was made a knight too, just not sure which) Wonder why it ended inn Norway rather than Denmark I'd have to do more research but I'm sure Prince Carl on Denmark had a lot to do with it., sussed it.. well some of it, Prince Carl became King of Norway later, our family is very complex Haakkon family tree goes back to the Heimskringla, but so does Gustefs.. different mothers.. King Halfdanesson had 18 wives 6 are named in the book and although it was written years later, it dates to late 700s early 800s Anyway, CR is Carl. Prince of Denmark later to be king of Norway 1905 Lo, There do I see my Father Lo, There do I see my Mother and My Brothers and my Sisters Lo, There do I see the line of my people back to the beginning Lo, They do call to me They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla Where thine enemies have been vanquished Where the brave shall live Forever Nor shall we mourn but rejoice for those that have died the glorious death.
