I love how this channel doesn't just teach Japanese in a super fun way, but also, thanks to videos and this and the video game examples in the bigger videos, helps you discover new amazing games

On last video I thought about this one! The text is really parsed in short sentences making it easy to understand. Plus, the fact that it’s mystery novel makes the writer really want to give you a few informations per scene, repeated so that they’re sure you’re on track. I want to say that during these last 5 years learning japanese i’ve tried 40 or 50 games, and those two you selected are the 2 I would have pick as really good material to learn japanese with 👌

@TheBaptisteD

@@GameGengo Thank you haha! I think a third choice would be Tokimeki Memorial, Love Plus, or another dating sim, but I know them not enough. In terms of daily life vocabulary + a lot of Voice Acting + an incentive to understand what happens, it’s great haha. Take a look at Fuuraiki 4 which just released on Switch if you don’t know it. I’m not sure of its potential for japanese learning as I didn’t play it but the concept of the game is amazing. Basically travelling in bike towards northern Japan simulator.

Great reminder that I should go through the game again, I already played through it in English before I decided to step towards learning Japanese. It's really stellar game.

Can’t thank you enough for letting me know about this game game. Been playing it on the switch for a week, already 40 hours in but only 20% of the story revealed (reaaally taking my time) and already my srs deck contains 750 words lol. This game is fantastic, instant classic for me. I’m in love with it! And indeed it’s amazing for language learners, for all the reasons you delve into in the video.

Just ordered a copy through a Japanese shipping forwarding service. This looks exactly like the type of game I was looking for but couldn't find! Thank you so much for making this video! :)

The US version has JP audio, but the US version only has English/European subtitles (subtitle language is set according to your system settings, you can't change it in-game). If you want JP audio and JP subtitles, then you have to buy the game from the JP region store. There's a clip at about 6:40 that makes it look like you can get both subs on the screen (the font was pretty similar to game), but I think the EN subs were added in video editing.

As someone trying to learn primarily with games, I can't tell you how immensely useful it is that you sprinkle in these videos that provide exactly the information I want to know! It's a gigantic pain to do preliminary research on how good a game is as a language learning aid prior to committing to buying it because even if you look at online discussions of a game, watch videos of people playing the game, or even read a feature list of a game, nobody ever, ever, EVER talks about or shows off stuff like chat logs, cutscene replay, etc! Because of that, almost all of the games I've tried to play in Japanese are either games that 1) I've played in English so I know the features they have or 2) I can only play in Japanese anyway. I'm definitely making this game the next one I play after I finish Ookami! Thank you!

Awesome video! I loved this game so much playing it in English when it first released and definitely want to return to it for some immersion/reading practice. Not only is it really well formatted for language learning, it's also such a compelling and special game in general. I'd also recommend the recent Crayon Shin Chan switch game for beginners/moderates as a good intro game; it has a lot of repetitive daily routine vocab, an easy to follow main plot, and lots of voice acting/furigana with text that doesn't auto-advance like in the rest of the Boku No Natsuyasumi series. I'm playing through it now and can really feel my comfort level with the language growing!

I know which ones aren't: SNES-era retro JRPGs. As fun as they are, no furigana, voice acting, and fonts so pixelated it's sometimes impossible to look them up by radical. Bonus points for non-pausing running text.

I love the focus on specific game elements (voiced audio, scene selection) that makes this game a good choice for language learning. It would be great if there's further differentiation for games that are great for learning while you're playing and games that are great for learning because of available online resources (scripts, vocabulary lists, Anki decks, learning walkthrough videos like yours). That being said, I don't think these game elements can really replace online resources for now. If I'm playing on a console and see a new word I would have to type it in my phone's dictionary to look it up and then if I wanted some context I would have to take a picture of my screen or record it, and may even proceed to type the whole sentence in. If there were already scripts available online (with furigana, translation, audio and all that fun stuff) I could just search on my phone and get that in my review list or Anki app. I wouldn't need to boot up my console and start the game when I want to focus on studying or when I'm doing my reps on the train.

Great video and thank you for the suggestion. It’s not a big deal but you could be more concise with your script, some lines of the video are a little redundant repeating the same point. Still awesome video tho, would had played in English if not for this video.

This video led to me making a Japanese ps4 account and buying gift cards so I could get this game. I didn't know it was even possible, so thanks for getting me to look for options! Haven't started the game yet but looking forward to it, and just generally stoked I can access some Japanese store games. Seems my paypal account wouldn't connect, so looks like I'll have to stick with games that allow gift cards.

Thanks for such a great review! I find myself really limited in my platform use though, so I was wondering, would you be planning to recommend more games on other platforms? Especially Steam or games available on mobile? I've found that one of the games that's helped me the most was on mobile and it was great because it had no English option, so I found myself forced to learn because I enjoyed playing so much and wanted to get better. However, it's going down at the end of the month, so I'm both sad about that and hoping to find a replacement.

Hi, thank you for this video. First of all, my japanese is very bad, so I'm far from the best person out there to give any advice about good stuff to learn japanese, here are a few I could recommand for future episodes., I found Yo-Kai Watch (first one on 3ds) pretty easy, and with a dictionnary app, it might be the only game out there I have been able to play and understand something like 20% of the dialogs (and unlike pokemon, it's a japanese modern setting and yokai are an actual thing in japanese culture). I also played the Dragon Ball Heroes card games on 3ds, since I already know the story from the manga, I wasn't lost and it helped me a lot to get comfortable with hiragana & katakana. Finally, I have heard that the Tokimeki Memorial series is also great for japanese learners since it mostly features real life vocabulary and is mostly voiced, although I haven't been able to understand anything from it. Fuuraiki (PSX) might worth checking out as well

Hello, im wondering at what age a japanese kid can start to fully enjoy a game like that? An english kid, after he has learnt his 26 letters and can read the few combinations of them, is good to go. But in japanese, with so many kanji, are the games like this one limited to grown adult with a lot of learning behind him? Thanks for the answer!
@narutofanere
@narutofanere 3 года назад
This isn’t aged at kids if that’s what you’re getting at. Just because you know the alphabet doesn’t mean you can read, pronounce or understand what is being said.
@grecbiblique
@grecbiblique 3 года назад
@@narutofanere I know what you mean, but maybe i misused the word kid. I mean that at age 8-10, i surely was able to read at least any word, because of the few letters in my french/english alphabet, even if i could not understand every word. What im wondering is, are japanese kids of 8-10 years can co and pick up a game of pokemon or final fantasy and be able to read every word even if not understanding them? It seems to me as if in every sentence there would be one or more kanji they never met, since they keep learning them until their late years of school. My 6 years old daughter has learnt all her alphabet last year and that is it for her, now its reading ability and vocabulary for her, she doesnt have to keep learning "letter symbols". It seems that they have it tough with kanjis, im sure it is way easier for them to listen at things, like anime, but when it comes to reading, in manga or games, it feels like you have to have a very good knowledge of kanji to be able to enjoy them, hence having to be way older compared to us.
@narutofanere
@narutofanere 3 года назад
@@grecbiblique You are right the Kanji would be the main thing that they would struggle with, but also they grow up in Japan so they would still be seeing Kanji that they aren't exposed to in a classroom setting. Otherwise they'd never be able to read or do things. Pokemon for example has a hiragana only version for them so they can do that.
