In both "Fibber McGee" and "Great Gildersleeve," the eponymous characters always get very excited whenever they hear that buckwheat cakes are on the breakfast menu. What's so great about buckwheat cakes?

Was he gay? Character and actor. He was a bachelor living with his sister's kids. Gay.

The character of Gildersleve was created on the Fibber McGee and Molly show, and at that time he had a wife. When they created the show The Great Gildersleve, the writers decided to eliminate his wife in order to create increased dramatic possibilities for the character's story line, including the comical potentials of a bachelor trying to figure out how to raise two children.
