Great horned owls are magnificent birds, but sometimes it takes watching them in slow motion to really appreciate their beauty and strength. Their immense wing-spans and powerful bodies are on best display during take-offs and landings, and here are some of our favorite video clips.

I'm a senior now but have always been fascinated by owls since I was a child. Growing up in a large city they were far and few between. Although I did witness thru the years growing up Saw-whets, Great Horned and Barn Owls on hikes in forests and going up north in Canada. Absolutely fabulous footage of these tremendous birds of prey ! The slow mo. of their wingspan landings are majestic ! Great work on the editing and commentary.

@@TexasBackyardWildlife I can confirm- I’m a central Texan bird nerd and that’s how I learned that great horned owls are VERY territorial haha. A few years ago I was working the night shift next to Bergstrom airport which, still being near the edge of town, has a lot of wildlife, especially at night. I think it was December or January and we kept hearing an owl hooting so loud it was audible inside the office. Well one night around 2am I went outside trying to spot it and it was on top of a light pole at the far end of the parking lot. I hooted back and it zoomed the 100 yard distance in a couple seconds and landed on the roof right above me, all puffed up and glaring down, and giving me some (in hindsight) “get out of my territory” angry hoots. I should have known better but I hooted back one more time and it dive bombed my head, didn’t actually touch me but certainly taught me a lesson. I love seeing the wildlife I grew up with captured so wonderfully on your channel, keep up the great work!

Extraordinary video. These are hands-down one of my very favorite birds of pray, and for good reason. Just look how strikingly beautiful they are. Aside from their beauty, they are one of the most powerful hunters of the wildlife kingdom. And they’re also bold and fearless. While studying their nests, tagging, etc., it is necessary to wear protective gear. Other than the exception of the golden eagle, the great horned owl has the most powerful grip of any bird of prey, exerting a pressure of more then 500 pounds per square inch. Studying the species over the years, I have witnessed them bringing a very wide variety of prey back to their nest that includes skunks, porcupines, small dogs, foxes, domestic cats and so much more. Excellent work! I truly look forward to your videos. Blessings to you and yours kola.
@TexasBackyardWildlife
@TexasBackyardWildlife 3 года назад
Thank you George Silver. Interesting what you say about protective gear - when Dan is up on a ladder adjusting cameras or whatever in the owl nest platforms he wears googles, a helmet, and a heavy jacket (even in TX heat) and he ropes himself in. We've only ever seen them bring back rats, mice, and birds, but we've heard that they're capable of killing much larger animals.

One night I went to take out the garbage and something made me just look to my left and upward and there it's at and let me tell you I did not realize how big a great horned owl was scared the Jeepers out of me! As we stared at each other I decided I would just go back in till he was done doing what he was doing and right before my door went shut I heard him take off in flight and the sound of those wings is massive absolutely massive I could hear them flapping when he was so far away. Come to find he said in my tree just about every night and I never knew it.

The Great Horned Owls are quite beautiful. Very graceful. Love hearing their hoots and calls. Where we grew up there was a pair who lived in our silver maple tree facing west, and also in the neighbor’s huge silver weeping willow tree just a few more feet away. They would go back and forth between the two trees, and I honestly can’t say they preferred one tree over the other. They seemed to spend equal time in both trees. We would hear them call out throughout the night, and sometimes during the daytime. We fed the birds all around the property, and had cracked corn and a salt lick out towards our back yard at the southeast corner, and I’m sure the owls caught many a mice and other rodents in the general areas. Loved hearing them hooting throughout the night. This is a very nice video showing how graceful Horned Owls really are in the wild. Thank you. Take care now, Texas.

I love your compilation. A labor of love! I love owls, but a great horned owl would do late night strikes on the chest of a mated male bald eagle in SWFL, whose nest is on the Pritchett Reality Company pasture... to see that owl knock M off of the tree branch was always upsetting to see...
@TexasBackyardWildlife
@TexasBackyardWildlife 3 года назад
Yes, I can imagine that would be very upsetting indeed. I guess the owl felt the eagle was competing for territory?
@carolynnunes3922
@carolynnunes3922 3 года назад
Texas Backyard Wildlife Exactly! Both M and Harriet have been raising their eaglets in their giant nest in a tree in the pasture at Dick Pritchett Reality, and the great horn owls also have a nest in the same area... I watch Lady Hawk’s channel, about birds raising their young, and she edits and uploads videos of several bald eagle nests from around the country, a golden eagle nest in Romania, the California condor nest in Big Sur, (amongst the redwoods on the coast in California), and the royal albatross of New Zealand... But there was an intense period of a couple of months where the horned owl would strike poor M right on his chest and knock him off his branch while he was sleeping!
@TexasBackyardWildlife
@TexasBackyardWildlife 3 года назад
We'll have to take a look at Lady Hawk's channel. Thanks for the heads-up. The gt horned owls here are certainly also territorial. They'll strike at the raccoons and foxes - though strangely they never seem to actually hurt them, I guess the intent is just to scare them off. I feel for M. It must have been hard to see him knocked off his branch.
@carolynnunes3922
@carolynnunes3922 3 года назад
Texas Backyard Wildlife Of all the eagle couples, M and Harriet are my favorite! When here it is ready for meeting, she sticks her foot out and fix him. Sometimes he responds to her kicks, and sometimes she doesn’t. And he is a most awesome father. People were getting grumpy at E 15, because she stayed for longer than she should have after flushing, and people are worried that her presence would throw their breeding season off last year. But he was a good father and continue to feed her and supply her with food long after she should have left... Lady Hawk’s editing is, like yours, a labor of love! I love your channel, And I am just a recent subscriber. As for Ladyhawke, I happen to see a picture of the 14 any good of a couple of years ago who ended up dying due to rat poison in some of the food she was being fed and she bled out! The mourning over the loss that eaglet was huge! God bless you, and your critters! See you around, onward and upward bound. Hallelujah

i live in northern MN, and in Feb 2020 i had an encounter with these owls. I could hear them hooting every night for two weeks or so, then the hooting faded. April-May comes around and Im looking at some broken trees in the woods, specifically a tree that broke about 30-40 ft up. i notice a nest. lo and behold, i could just make out the little tufts of young great-horned owls. i watched for a few days, spotted the parents, and all was good. i got home from work one day and the part of the tree that held the nest had fallen. i searched and found one youngling on the ground, then called the dnr and was informed the mother would gather it, so i left it as is. it was strange to see one so close, and to have heard/seen them over a few months. very cool. PS spectacular footage, thank you for putting the effort in to get these clips, absolutely amazing!
@TexasBackyardWildlife
@TexasBackyardWildlife Год назад
That's quite a story. We experienced something similar last year when a nest in a neighbor's yard blew down in a storm. There were 3 owlets. One was killed, one managed to survive somehow with the parents (as far as our neighbor could tell), and one wound up on the ground. When we tried to return the little groundling to the parents the next day they had moved on. The people at Austin Wildlife Rescue were advising us on what to do, but leaving the 3rd chick perched on its own in the tree seemed very risky. In the end, the AWR people reared it with a surrogate mama and then released it when it was grown.
