The beautiful cruise through the Dismal Swamp continues, with our 22nd day underway on the Great Loop taking us from the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center to Norfolk, Virginia. The Perch ends this leg at Waterside Marina in Norfolk, site of the America' Great Loop Cruisers' Association Spring Rendezvous.
The Great Loop is a 6,000-mile adventure dreamed of by many but completed by few. The route takes boaters on a circumnavigation of the eastern part of the U.S. and part of Canada stopping in small towns and big cities along the way.

Hi , great video , I’ve done both routes and prefer the dismal swamp. The coinjock route is popular especially with boats wanting to go fast less speed restrictions, and the great steak house there. In may 2022 we got delayed mid week with swing bridge that would not open at 7am , they made us and about 15 boats that got there early wait until 8:45! ( rush hour?) North landing /Rt 165 bridge. This lead to further delays at ‘great bridge locks’ and bridges further up , where they do a good job of opening a series of bridges and locks at the same time , but it still takes 1-1/2hrs to get thru , next time I’ll call ahead the day before to check about early openings! I lived across the street on the canal in the seventies, it was the best years of my life. The history and during the summer and fall you couldn't go hungry as you walked the canal looking for berries, grapes and native plums.

Cool video I grow up there and fished at the last lock and a shoul draft full keel would be my choice... Funny to see the expression on peoples faces after you hit a Branch or log,.

Boy! The Dismal Swamp Canal is aptly named. It looks like another time. I expect to see a giant sloth or a Sabertooth emerge from the vegetation. Also, is it a good idea to take a pod driven boat through the canal? Bumping may get expensive on a pod.

Not sure if I can really answer about the pods. Pumping can certainly get very expensive, but I'm not sure how much higher that risk is in the Dismal Swamp as opposed to other places on the Loop. Probably best for someone with pods to answer whether they took this route option and what issues they had.

On New Year's Day in 1776, Colonial Governor Dunmore gave orders to burn waterfront buildings in Norfolk from which patriot troops were firing on his ships. However, the fire spread. The city burned, and with it, any hope that Dunmore's loyalists could return to Virginia. At the time it was the largest city in VA and VA the most popular colony and Washington was furious but preparing to mount Knox's guns on the heights over Boston to eject the Red Coats from Bean Town.
