Never thought about how being sooooo overly interested in finding the objective meaning that maybe you miss the art. Like turning an art into math.

Math is an art as well. It’s like turning math into a science, which is sadly so often done

"poetry can do whatever it wants" love this sentiment! I found the book "soft science" by franny choi in a used bookstore five or six years ago and it solidified my love for poetry. I'd definitely recommend it!

your videos never cease to impress me. they feel very down to earth and, human in a very pleasant way. I like the mix of regular talking about the subject, mixed in with silly bits that make me feel like i'm having a fever dream for ten seconds, and then back to being what it was. your videos are truly really cool :) (sorry if this is poorly written or idk)

the line where he says "i know because i am him" to me was probably the funniest line. earlier, when it briefly is written in first person with no explanation, that acted as a kind of weird mystery, a setup to a punchline which is just a handwavey un-explanation betraying the simply unfocused writing. it adds to the kind of hyperactive narrative.

Is the same with painting if you think about it... Everyone thinks that "abstract art" is something profound because it tells you something, but every thing can make you think. A lamp can make me think something really profound about light, life and death, but that is not in the lamp but in my mind. The thing that makes a painting a work of art is the immovable soul that contains, that "something" that can't change, no matter what you abstract and take from the painting. A good poem is one that starts from a good idea and makes it speak in the words of beauty and humanity. (That's a lot of text 🥴)

Woo, Poetry Foundation mention! Their daily poems are always great for finding new stuff you haven't read before! For a general poet recommendation (because I like sharing), Nick Flynn is my favourite, and I'd really recommend his book Blind Huber - especially if you like sitting with a specific voice, as all the poems follow a theme, but are quite varied at the same time (hurray, nuance in poetry, lol) One poem from the book, Twinned, has been my favourite poem for, like, ten years now!

“Echoes of the Cow Parsley" "Cow parsley," I whisper, "you dance with delight, Your blossoms, dreams woven in warm sunlight. So familiar a sight, tugging at my heart- Echoing whispers, yesteryear's start?" The cow parsley sways, replying under May's sky, "I bloom; feel the sun's touch, a lover's soft sigh. Hear my leaves rustle, confessing in hushed tones, Under the watchful eyes of sun, where light roams." "Cow parsley," I ask, my voice a soft sigh, "Do you recall the laughter, the tears, the goodbye? Your dance, a sonnet of spring's tender embrace- Is each memory not captured in this graceful space?" "Cow parsley," I ponder, my soul laid bare, "Can you see past and present, the love that we share? Your blossoms, like sonnets scribed in the light, Do they not bring forth memories, banishing night?" (sunlit cow parsley Friday 10th May Mal Malhi .)

great video! one line of flight that i personally would have liked to see was a discussion of rap as poetry. rap music is often overlooked as a poetic art form due to its perception as low art among white audiences, and thus it is never privileged in these discourses. some rappers outside of the mainstream who are more overt in their poetics that i would recommend are moor mother, h31r, r.a.p. ferreira, billy woods, open mike eagle, and quelle chris. again, great video!
@peytonburdette
@peytonburdette Месяц назад
thank you so much!! I will check those artists out. Songwriting in general and rap especially I consider to be poetry. Even more popular artists that I love like Pusha T, Mac, Public Enemy, etc,. their work has varying poetic qualities that I always find compelling. Heck, Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer prize a while back. I think rap, especially, gets overlooked for the exact reasons you mentioned. I know people in my town who think rap is evil, except for Christian rap, of course. NF is the GOAT lol. Admittedly, I'm just one guy who is making these, so I try to niche down as much as possible for my own sanity. I just stuck with written poetry, since this video was mostly in response to bad written poetry. thanks again for the kind words!
