I stumbled on to paper mache cuz I wanted to build my own scarecrow and couldn't find any large pumpkin heads to work with. I found that people on here were making their own out of paper. I watched dozens of videos before coming across yours and all I can say is WOW!! You are the master of this craft!! I never thought something like this could be taken to this level. Thanks for sharing your wisdom on this subject I've found it very useful.

GourmetPaperMache Oh, I've thought about it. I had decided this past summer to spend my northern Michigan winter creating a bottle cap art mural with a blue dragon. It was to be on an 8x4 sheet of luan (sp?). I was going to donate it to our elementary school and knew just the perfect place for it. I advertised on Facebook for my friends to save all their pop bottle caps and I got started. Ya, my intentions were good. LOL I do consider myself a crafty gal but just not in bottle cap at. hehehe Luckily, I found a lady not far from me who was able to use all the caps for her own art projects so not waste there. whew!

@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 10 лет назад
That is very nice of you to say KnitOutTheJams! I think that if someone is willing to take the time to watch my videos and then write to me that the least I can do is respond. I did respond to every comment since I started RU-vid, but a year ago, when Google took over RU-vid, I lost my channel. They were able to retrieve my videos with the comments, but not my subscribers or any of my responses. That was such a bummer. I know you didn't need to hear all of that. But there it is. Thank you! Dan

After seeing his absolutely stunning work I am truly inspired to take up paper mache dragon making. Thank you so much Dan. My journey begins now! haha
@a3883m
@a3883m 9 лет назад
Hey Dan, also a helpful idea for you since I'm sure people complain about your videos being too fast (which you said in your other video but I personally like how I don't have to wait for the action). There is a setting at the bottom of the video on RU-vid in which the viewer can select the video playback speed. All they need to do is set the speed to 0.25 and there you have it. A slowed down version of your precision. Hope that helps! :)
@a3883m
@a3883m 9 лет назад
a3883m Can you dry your paper mache in the oven? Say at 200 degrees for 15 minutes? I'm worried about mold buildup. Also, I have been using bigger pieces but they seem to be more difficult to keep down. Any suggestions?
@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 9 лет назад
a3883m Hello a3883m. I appreciate all the nice comments! Thanks for telling people about the speed. They always want me to slow down. But it's time-lapse. It is shot at 1 frame per second. There is nothing to slow down. I would never dry the mache in the oven. It would dry on the outside but stay wet inside. Just put it someplace with warm circulating heat. Mold is only an issue if you don't let it dry thoroughly. Good luck! Dan

Can I ask you a question...? I have built a doll school house using cardboard, newspaper and paper mache, I have torn down a wall to make one of the rooms bigger and plan on redoing it with paper mache in the spots that cardboard is visible... here is a link to the pictures skullacademy.blogspot.ca/ My question is, can I paper mache over the glossy paint? Should I sand it first, or just add another layer of cardboard over the whole 'wall' ? Thank you, I tried googling this but no help ...

Hélène Loranger The song is called "Hard Life". I bought the rights from a "royalty free" music company. But I bought it several years ago and I don't remember the artist or which company I used. I searched on all the companies I use and nothing come up. That means that they have dropped the piece from their list. It happens. I agree. It's a compelling piece of music. That's why I bought it. Glad you all like it. Dan

GourmetPaperMache Awesome! Good for you for buying it and being legit! Too bad we don't know who it is cause it's a great little tune! Reminds me of Tool mixed with Isis mixed with Katatonia kind of deal! :) Thanks Dan! And again, you are amazingly talented. :D

Hello, idk if you remember me, but I was at state vase. My dragon had made it to state vase, and I was also in your work shop. I just wanted to see if you had seen it. By the way, that dragon trophy is sick. I like his teeth, they look "smoky"

This is INCREDIBLE. I'm about to undertake a similar project. What did you use to create the teeth? Polymer clay? And your glue is simple white pva glue and white fabric sheets over the top of paper mache? Or something like Paverpol? Are you using a simple flour paste for the the paper mache or another recipe? Where did you get the glass half orbs for eyes? Sorry for asking so many questions. Is it just masking tape you're using to hold everything together? Thanks in advance for your time!
@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 3 года назад
Hello Carla. I do use polymer clay for the teeth, usually Fimo. After sculpting with paper mache pieces I add a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue. I like Elmer's but any white glue will work. I dubbed the process "cloth mache" for lack of a better term. I use just flour and water paste for the paper mache. I buy eyes online from taxidermy companies. There are many companies to choose from. And yes, I use masking tape to hold the paper mache pieces together. Good luck to you!

Sounds great AJ! Good luck with that! It's difficult to offer tips in this forum. It sounds like you are working small, so a paint brush would work fine. Absent any other information I guess I would just say not to plan too carefully. If you try to copy an image of a photo or one in your head too closely then you will gauge success by how it compares to that image rather than to how it looks objectively. Trust the process. Let it unfold. Let it surprise you! And have fun! If you do that it will turn out perfectly. Good luck! Dan
