Especially awesome video: “I resent trimming”; “I got a bit too reapy”!!!!! 😂😂😂 Cathy, I am a ruler person: if you get a 16.5” square ruler you can align the goose leg on the 45 degree line, the point on the 4.25” line and trim from there. Likely more precise (see how I’m selling the idea to you!? 🤣) and way quicker! Also, FYI you just made a controlled scrappy quilt! I will bring you to the scrappy side yet! XOX Happy Thanksgiving and if this is the last video before your break - enjoy your time with the fam! 😘
Thank you, Anne!❤️ Yes, I do feel the selling, but I don't mind--it's a friend sharing something they love, not a door-to-door salesman selling! 😂😘 I doubt I'll ever be a ruler person, but you never know! And yes, "controlled scrappy" LOL. Maybe one day I'll graduate to uncontrolled scrappy! 🤩 This is the last video before the break, so happy holidays to you and yours!
I just had to pause the video to comment... I just love your videos! Your comments are so relatable from the 'oopsie' moment of over aggressive seam reaping (😂), to not ever really checking to see what all those lines on a favorite ruler are meant to do (🧐). I seldom comment, and I never gush, but there are so many reasons I can't wait to enjoy your latest video and see what trouble you're up to! 😊 Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
I love your site. Just started watching and am amazed at how much you share about using shirts. The only time I’ve ever considered using ‘used’ shirts were for memory quilts. But you shed new light to thrift store shopping for quilting. I’ve watched a couple of previous episodes of yours but it didn’t click that your expertise is in using used shirts for quilting. I’m hooked and can’t wait to see all of your episodes. I love your humor too. You make me smile😄I stay up way too long with you.😳 Thanks so much!
You have come a long way, Cathy! From not knowing what to do with Kafe fabric to intentionally buying it for a quilt! I love your videos, they've like being with a friend. Maybe because you're actually talking to your best friend, Paul? I hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas
Thank you, Kathi! ❤ although these are still the gifted Kaffe Fassett fabrics-I haven’t voluntarily bought them…yet! 😂 I do talk to Paul (behind the camera) and he my very best friend, so maybe you’re right! 🥰 I hope your holidays are blessed too! ❤
Absolutely love this quilt Cathy 🥰 And I already love four at a time, no waste flying geese - why would you want to make them any other way 🤷♀️ I’m struggling to get enough white shirts so that holds me up a bit, but never mind, it’s the thrill of the chase to find them 🤣🤣 I’m also ‘what iffing’ because I’d love to see those geese with a black background 🤔🥰 Thanks to you both for another brilliant video. 👏👏🇬🇧 Take great care of each other 😃
Thank you, Glynis!❤ those Kaffe geese would certainly be set off beautifully by a dark background! 🤩🤓😍 I wish you had all the excess in your charity shops that we have in our thrift stores-you’d have those white shirts in a snap!!
Cathy! Cathy! Cathy! You did it! What a beautiful quilt! You are so very talented! I love the pattern and will get it but it may be 2025 before I am able to begin another quilt top. Love and blessings my friend!
Thanks for the link on the '4 at a time no waste flying geese'. I've shyed away from using lots of white shirts for background for the exact reason as your Patreon subscriber mentioned. Thanks for the OxiClean tip. I always look forward to Friday mornings with the Catbird!
Hi, Cathy Thank you for sharing. I'd put a Christmas project away because I wasn't feeling it yesterday, and after watching you this morning, I spent the morning making flying geese units out of the Christmas blocks. I live Ireland and enjoy your videos.
Another great video! I have yet to enter the world of thrifting shirts for fabric because I have too much quilting cotton and the only thrift store in my large rural county thinks its used clothing should cost as much as the neighboring retail shops. However, I buy a lot of estate sale fabric. Saving fabric from the landfill, either way. Your videos always give me great ideas and frankly I just like listening to you. I have made close to 200 quilts (foster kids and grandkids mostly) but somehow managed to mostly avoid flying geese. I have no idea why. I don’t think it was intentional. I will have to put this quilt on my list for another way to use up some of another quilter’s stash that has somehow worked its way into my stash. Thank you for another fun and informative video.
Elaine, I’m in awe! 200 quilts is amazing! I’m working my way up to doing one quilt, but have decided this is the year, with our lovely Cathy’s help and advice! Can see myself in lots of charity shops looking, but not sniffing😂 for shirts. Here in UK, we have boot sales too, where people meet on a field, and sell unwanted stuff from their cars. That will be a good source of fabric too! Happy New Year to you and your family❤️
The creative grids 4.5 by 12.5;is perfect to trim these flying geese. I did meadowland quilt which called for same size, also great quilt pattern. Thank you for tips on flying home quilt. Look forward to making this next😊
A fun tutorial! I think this method of making flying geese is ingenious! I found it last year, but I think it has been around for several years! Your quilt is beautiful! I am going to get this pattern right now! Thanks!
I've never used a pattern before preferring to create as i go. I really like this and just might have to take it on. I found myself wanting to rotate your 4 big pieces to see all the other possibilities. I have a tendency to want to explore the "what ifs" on each project. Did you play around with that?
Sheryl, I didn’t play around with the orientation of the blocks (maybe next time!) but I DID try every color arrangement under the sun (well, felt like it!😂) until I settled on the burgundy/plum in the center with the orange around it and Kaffe red/orange in between! I think it would be a fun experiment to flip those blocks around and see the secondary patterns it would make! 🤩🤓😍
Loved this video Cathy! I’m amazed that you can get the background fabric from just 3 shirts! I’m hunkering down, watching the snow falling outside, watching my favourite quilter❤ Haven’t been on RU-vid for a while, so have lots to catch up on. Thanks for your advice, and making me laugh😂 Greetings from a cold UK
Hey Tink! I've missed you--glad to see your name back in the comments again! ❤️ I would love to trade with you---we love the snow but don't get much here in the South! 🙃
I love your eye for detail but I mostly love the way you also don’t worry about little details. (does that make sense?) I also use both my straight edge and mat when I trim. I’ve never tried flying geese but promised myself I will challenge myself in 2024.
Love the red-pink-fuchsia-orange-burgundy flying geese on that bright white background. Valentine’s Day or Christmas! ❤️🎄 Also the large areas of solid white are an excellent space for some fancy quilting. Another beautiful quilt top Cathy! 👍🏼👍🏼
Just grabbed the recommended ruler - I am excited to get that! I think I will really use the 1/4" marked length along the side. Thanks for the recommendation. The pattern looks great too - I think I'll add that to my quilts-to-make list!
Good morning Cathy, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Your quilt is so beautiful. I just tried flying geese for the first time and was surprised at how easy they were compared to how hard I had made them in my mind. This would make a beautiful two color quilt in many combinations. Have a great Friday!
Morning, Debbie!❤ and yes, I had it in my mind that they would be difficult-imagine my surprise when they really aren’t! And you’re right-a two color quilt in this pattern would be lovely!!
I saw Jennifer Stern's video today about a seam "remover" gadget. Thought of you. I can't remember if you just cut your shirts. Once she got it started, she easily moved it horizontally. She demonstrated removing the belt loop and pocket of jeans and also using a silk fabric. Caused no damage to the pocket or fabric.
WOW 👌 you got to the flying home quilt, awesome Cathy ... yet another gorgeous quilt , love it ,love it.. can't wait to see it finished and quilted... René
Thank you Cathy. To help a person not clip off the top point of the goose by sewing too close, one should really start trimming the TOP or point of the goose instead of the bottom as you demonstrated. Check to make sure there's 1/4" from the top to the edge. If there is then you trim more from the bottom (wide) edge to trim. If there isn't 1/4" then you can note that (I put a pin on the top) if you need to take less than 1/4" at the top.along the entire seam so it will lay flat.
Another lovely quilt! Your color sense is... "chef's kiss"! I know you're not a lots-of-rulers person, but I invested in a flying geese ruler. There are several, I got one from Creative Grids. I use it frequently. I think it's one well worth the price - If you make a lot of geese! It has lines for all the pertinent things, and they are so precise, every time! (and I dig the board game shout out!)
Thank you, Angela!❤️ And I just *knew* we had to have at least one other Settlers-of-Catan-playing-quilter out here in TCBQ community! 🤩🥰 I'll check out that Creative Grids goose ruler if I keep making so many of them--thank you for the suggestion! 🤓😘
😂 I resent trimming too-but you’re absolutely right that it covers a multitude of sins. I also resent the waste of snowball corners. I’m glad I’m not the only one! I definitely use the no waste flying geese method whenever possible, even when the pattern doesn’t call for it. I’ve also finally figured out how to do no waste snowballed strips and it opens up a whole bunch of patterns I was way too thrifty to try before!
Valerie, I was looking at a pattern that called for flying geese and thought, "How can I do this the no-waste method?" so you are definitely NOT the only one! ❤️ And I'm with Jennifer! I want to know this no-waste snowball method!! 🤓
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I posted this on my instagram about a week ago. I’m vvtennessee there. I was hoping some other quilters would find it useful because when I googled I didn’t find a method!
I was inspired to visit our local thrift stores to go on a shirt hunt a month ago, but the average price was over $20 each. Disappointed! Then 2 weeks ago I was in Ohio where prices were $4 on average. A smile returned to my face!
I found a this great tutorial with step by step pictures for the 8 at a time no waste flying geese! And it includes a cutting chart for 10 finished sizes!
Where did you find the chart? Do I can go get one. I'd like to change up the size for a table runner or bed footy thingy. I also like miniatures. Yeah, it is still a lot of work. It is fussy. I am an exacting eye - I'll redo should I have missed something. "I am the daughter of an engineer!". Love the craft.!!!! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing all these helpful tips. I am kinda afraid of HST: all those points, all that bias!. However, the four at a time technique looks helpful. Your work is beautiful, as usual. Happy American Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Thank you, Diane!❤ fear not-of HST’s, flying geese, or any other piecing-you have the ability to make them all successfully!🤩 a few tips and some practice and you’ll be set!
This is such a great pattern and your tips are great. i checked out the pattern. i like having a colored background. im wondering how to do that with shirts. keep looking?
Unless you stumble upon 3-4 identical shirts OR choose a basic blue (or maybe grey) men's shirt that will blend with others like it, I'd probably keep looking! 😘 Ps it's a GREAT question and the reason I approach quilt patterns the way I do! 🤓👍🏻
Love love love this!❤ It's gorgeous and it's on my 'make that' list, but I want to make it bigger (king size) and this is an easy pattern to do that without breaking my brain doing the maths 😅 I came across another quilt pattern recently on the Missouri Star channel called the Secret garden quilt and thought it would be a good shirt quilt pattern....letme know what you think??? Love from Melbourne ❤
Aww, thank you, Kim! ❤️ I do think it would be easy to make it bigger!! I will check out that pattern and get back to you! 😘 Love to you, too, from Alabama! ❤️
Ok, so you could do the white border with several shirts, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to do it with shirts and get that look she did in the video! (it's beautiful though!)
Hi. This is my first time watching and I love Kaffe fabrics! Thanks for bringing this pattern to our attention. I haven't used thrifted shirts yet for quilting, but I have unraveled sweaters for crocheting and knitting. So yay for thrifting! I wonder if you have figured out how much per yard thrifted shirts cost? They are usually $3.50 each around these parts (unless they up the price in the new year), so I was just wondering how economical it is. Of course, recycling fabric is a great idea in itself. Just an FYI: I have bad astigmatism , so "staying in the road" ain't easy. So I draw lines! Thanks!
I have had the same experience this last time around. I loved the quilt pattern, and I knew the recipient would love the quilt pattern. As I assembled the top, it never quite hit the sweet spot. After staring at the finished top for about a week, I realized I had chosen the wrong pattern, and that was the issue. I would love to send you a picture to discuss. What is your business email?
Terriellen, you are welcome to email me at cathy@thecatbirdquilts.com but I will confess, my email takes a backseat to the Patreon community and responding to YT comments! Have you thought of joining us on Patreon? It is the perfect format for sharing photos, getting support from fellow quilters/TCBQ viewers about projects, and interacting with additional videos and content. I’d love to have you there!
Ok, friends..you must watch Carol Thelen..a professional quilting instructor teach 4 at time flying geese! Not that Cathy is not giving good instructions, it’s just that this lady is so good. She has several videos on this subject. Also, I trim my geese with a square ruler just a little bigger than I need and use painter’s to mark my geese size and away I go! I’m careful to check all sides, but the tape helps your eyes target that geese size. And..also..the invention of trimming to size..thank goodness! (KH)
I’m thinking that a single flying geese block is just that - one flying geese block. I’m thinking the block represents a single flight of geese. In the fall and spring in goose country, the sky sometimes contains several V’s of geese; that is several groups of geese flying in the V formation. One V = one flight of geese. Thus each block shows a V of geese, flying. Geese only form a V when flying, after all.
My daughter's husband passed away about 5 years ago, and we saved a lot of his shirts to hopefully one day make a quilt for her son out of his first Daddy's shirts. The problem is they are a mixture of T-shirts, work shirts, and dress shirts. I can sew and I have put together quilts before, but this feels out of my league and I don't want to mess it up. Can you give me some advice? How do I look for a person who could possibly put this quilt top together?
Darlene, I'm so sorry that I'm just now responding---somehow I missed this comment! It does seem like it would be tricky to put together t-shirts, work shirts AND dress shirts! 😱 And since you have an emotional connection, I think it might be even more challenging to make it yourself. I wish I knew someone who made these types of quilts, but I bet if you Google "memory shirt quilts" or go on Etsy and search memory quilts, you can find a great maker to put your son-in-law's clothes into a beautiful quilt for your daughter!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Did you get the photos I sent you? Sent one of my blue and white chequerboard quilt, a Kaffe quilt and one using scraps plus a huge blue shirt?
Missouri Star is having their patterns for $1.50 instead of $10.00, for Black Friday. Can you recommend some that you feel would be great for shirts? Happy Thanksgiving Thanks for all your work and inspiration!
LorRae, I haven’t really used any Missouri Star quilt patterns, so I can’t give any recommendations, but if you click on “playlist” on my YT page, you can see all the “Great Quilt Patterns” videos that I recommend for shirts!😘
Hey Kathy, just checking on you didn’t see a video on Friday I’m sure i missed you telling me why but I count on you to talk to me on Fridays. Let me know that you’re doing OK.
I’m fine! If you missed the FAQ’s, WIP’s and channel update video, that’s where we mentioned that we’re taking a break for December!! But we may have a little video THIS Friday to pass along some news and wish everyone a happy holiday! 😉
Between you and Kate, I know I will be making no waste flying geese very soon!! But next up will be some wonky stars for my son. Every time I give away a quilt, he always says he does not have one. I told him I had to wait until the right pattern came along that said it belonged to him. And plaid shirt fabric wonky stars are whispering his name
Have a look across the pond at 'the last homely house'. Kaye did one recently for a kids charity. It was mindless but ever so brilliant!! Quickly put together.
