Why did Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches split in 1054 A.D.? This video explores the political, cultural and theological issues between Eastern and Catholic faiths. For example, what is filioque and why was it important? What caused the Eastern Patriarch and the pope to fight? All of this is covered in this video in the Great Schism of 1054.

This is outstanding. I am Catholic, my cousin is Orthodox. I remember he told me he doesn't have so much a theological issue with the filioque but that the Western Church did not have permission to do such a thing. I remember when Pope Benedict removed the title of Patriarch of the West from his titles. He did this in an effort to remove the bloviated titles of the pope. However, the Patriarch of Constantinople issued a rebuke as this was seen by the east as an attempt by the pope to be the patriarch of the world. It is fascinating. At the end of the day, we humans just have too much pride.

There are theological reasons though outside of you can't change the creed. Mainly that if I understand correctly, that when speaking of the Trinity, it either has to be true of all of the members of the trinity, or only true about one. Thus you can't have the Holy Spirit coming from both the Father and the Son without (albeit inadvertently) calling into question the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
@charlesmhorn
@charlesmhorn Год назад
@@anitalitwiller2080 It's language. The Greek and Latin mean different things. Recent conversations suggest that both the west and east believe the same thing. The Holy Spirit is generated and proceeds from the father. The word proceeds in the west does not mean generated as it does in Greek. Rather I proceed out of my door but my house did not generate me. Christ can also send the Holy Spirit. However, in the Greek, it is better not to use the term as it would suggest Jesus generates the Holy Spirit. He does not. So the Catholic and Orthodox Church agree. John 15:26. Last note, this addition to the creed was added to fight heresy in the west that sought to show that Jesus was not fully God but that the Holy Spirit was another name for God. Anyways, I've read a ton on this. I have found that most people do not give an honest take of the various arguments. Language is a sticky thing. Words mean different things in different languages.

The people who have asked me about Orthodox are shocked to find out that the the western Church, known as the Roman Catholic, was the result of the schism. Bonnie Johnston, that claim about St Ninian is totally false and crazy . It;s like you claiming that St Bede the Venerable was a secret Russian monk. Total fib! St. Ninian was a Briton who'd trained in Rome. His Episcopal See was named after St Martin of Tours ( Latin Church ). He was ALWAYS part of the Latin Church and ALWAYS obedient to the authority of the Pope. He had nothing to do with what you refer to as "Orthodox". That term was not in use when St. Ninian was alive. There's no association between St Ninian, what you now call "Orthodoxy". Next you'll also claim that St Patrick was a secret Greek cleric.

A lot of historians have maintained that the eventbin 1054 was an excommunication of the entire Eastern and Western halves of the Church but in reality it was between just Humbert and the Patriarch. The same goes for me, in my current state: An Orthodox Christian lacking repentance towards God. I am the worst man I know... Yet God, in His mercy, provides for our sustenance, gives us to rise each day for another shot at repentance... Maybe today is the day that you give up your false autonomy, and cry out to Jesus Christ to save you from this bitter life full of death and decay. Love your God with all your strength and all your mind and all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself; There are times that you've done good and you've known it. There are times that you've done evil, and you know that it was wrong. Your conscience, the voice of God inside you, which cries out when everything inside and outside is silent... @@chayanroychoudhury3091 I think there is one major reason and that is papal authority. Now I know thatd a firestorm from my experience in the Orthodox realm but hear me out I'm not some "Deus Vult everyone must unconditionally submit" kind of guy. I want to emphasize that I'm not a theologian and wont try to act like one. It seems to me (I'm sure there are exceptions) that most Orthodox that I've encountered have 0 interest in reunion with the West at all which to me is anti biblical how Jesus wanta the church to be one just as he and the Fatherare one. I wont claim that Rome always is correct but just as Satan inflitrated the RC with peodophile prelots I think he also inflitrated the EO with bitterness and lack of desire to reunite. If our churches could come back think of how strong we could be to muater against new atheism or the attack of Islam. So by papal authority I mean the power the pope has to act as the head of the church and make disputing bishops sit down and talk it out with councils. Like a parent making two fighting children ait down amd make up after a fight. Again I'm no theologian but what I saw between Moscow and Constantinople over Ukraine made me think this is why we need a pope a third party to settle these infighting disputes.

This is the Western Scism. The Western Church was the one that delivered the letter of excommunication to the Eastern Church because the Western Church established 1 man to be in absolute rule over the Church. Also, a Pope then went ahead and ordered the Changing of the Nicene Constantinople Creed. The Pope was only supposed to be first among equals, not absolute ruler.

I'm very familiar with this history. It seemed the last time the Eastern Roman army did anything for the Bishop of Rome was coming to the Italian peninsula to oust the Ostrogoths. When they got there, the Ostrogoths mysteriously disappeared never to be heard from again. The Byzantine army went back to Constantinople and then the Pope and his Catholics faced another threat - the Lombards. That was when they called upon the Franks for assistance and the Franks eventually became the militant guardians of the Roman Church and of course, this led to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire with a Frankish king as its emperor. This is why the conversion of the Franks was so vital to the survival of the Roman Catholic faith.

It's because it never was a dividing issue. Iconoclasm was strangling the Eastern Church and the Western Church fought against it, but so did the holy men of the Eastern Church. The 7th Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople, condemned iconoclasm as a heresy and reestablished icons in worship. This is a commonly venerated council between Orthodox and Catholics. While this period of Christian history can be used as an example of rising tensions between the East and West, it cannot be said at all that iconoclasm was a dividing issue between the Orthodox and the Catholics, both of whom hate and condemn iconoclasm.

@@Murlo. 😂 I like it. But, if you will, let’s pretend you’re serious for a moment, to allow me make a point. I hope it’s not too boring. It is interesting that the Devil character is entirely absent from the bible and is a post biblical invention, using ideas borrowed from Hellenism and then applied in error to misunderstood passages. Satan simply means opposer or adversary and is a role or function, not a name. We might think of it as a 'devil's advocate' whose job is to be a contending voice in debate. Lucifer is even more fascinating. It comes from two incorrect translations laid atop of each other. Firstly, a translation of a Hebrew phrase in Isaiah, “shining one, son of the dawn” which was a sarcastic reference to a Babylonian king with delusions of grandeur. It was translated into Greek by the Septuagint as Theophorous which was another name for the planet Venus, also known as the morning star. Later, in his translation to Latin, Jerome used the word Lucifer, which was the planet’s other name. From all that we get the idea of Satan as person and Lucifer as Satan, and the post biblical development of the Devil came to be associated with the word Satan and the name Lucifer but all of it is the invention of men, after the bible was written, and is merely folklore. So, your funny comment just shows how men can create their own demons and then convince themselves they are real and that is why only Christians are possessed. It’s in their minds. Have a good one.

I'm not so sure both need to be cleansed or corrected first. I think the most important thing is that both churches accept who the actual head of the church needs to be. Hint hint, it's not the Pope. And it's not the Patriarchy either. (It's Jesus.) It's a shame the schism has lasted so long, given that this has come up before. See Luke 22:24 etc. Point is, fighting over who will be the greatest is the wrong fight. And really, fighting over who will be the greatest is the primary factor in the divisions that have happened in the church. More or less, the Protestant Reformation was the result of people realizing just how much the Catholic Church had been corrupted. They had invented theology, kept the people ignorant of their special relationship with Christ, weakened Christ's power over death, and muddied the Gospel with idol worship. At the time, much of the Catholic Church agreed with the reformation. They were ousted from the church prior to the Catholic Reformation, which cemented the view to be the polar opposite of the reformation. It's all just power grabs. The thing is, most of theology is pointless to squabble over. Will Christ come pre or post tribulation? Should we remember notable historical figures or not? What should be the place of tradition in the church? These are important, but they are not worth the division that exists within the church. The only thing of importance within Christianity is Romans 10:9. "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." That establishes who is the lord of the church, and from that there's not much room for infighting. I question whether or not the Catholic Church has strayed too far from accepting Romans 10:9. The Pope is not the head of the Church. The Pope does not save from sin. And neither can any Saint or other Christian. And, you can not save yourself from sin through works. Nor are works required to save. (Nor do they aid in salvation.) So long as the Catholic Church dethrones God for a man with a shiny hat and denies the saving power of Christ, how am I supposed to justify calling them Christians? They are no different from pagans. They worship a fancy pantheon of human men and believe that their own deeds are meritorious enough to grant them access to heaven. But I somehow doubt that all Catholics truly believe the theology of the Pope. Romans 10:9 isn't that well hidden, nor is it the only passage that conveys the same meaning (both testaments scream the same thing on repeat... it can get a little annoying, even). It's just a very concise version of it. If the Catholic Church ever decides to accept Romans 10:9, then there really isn't any reason all of the churches can't finally reunite under one banner, which is Christ. If all report to Jesus alone, why are we calling ourselves different names when in so doing we hinder others from finding Christ? Christ's mission is to spread the Gospel and make Disciples not to convolute the Gospel and scare people away with complex history lessons in minutia nobody cares to sit through just to learn that none of it really matters. Yeah, your history lessons are fun for the history nerds, but most people are not history nerds. Myself excluded, apparently.

There’s a god complex within the pope for sure, to have gone along and changed up scriptures or meanings on it own - through its own interpretations, thus leading the masses to astray and allowed to be taken over by a satanic cult doctrine that was originally out of Babylon by these Pharisees Christ pointed out in the first place when they started a belief system. The very secret they keep from people is that they are divine in their own right and like Christ in the flesh. They built a church of stone and Christ god built a temple in us. They keep us in them so we won’t ever know who we are. People will always be looking outside of them self’s for salvation when it’s always been in the temples God gave us. Your videos make RU-vid worthwhile! I would love it if you made one about Arianism, just to learn more about it.

Thank you for explaining in this manner. I've heard it explained before but it always confused me but I am not confused anymore.

That's cool man! It was the only pic I could find where Orthodox priests are standing lined up like this. I thought it was a good representation of the 'united brothers' style of leadership in Orthodoxy. :)

Pictured are "Oriental Orthodox" which broke off in the 500's. They are different from the Canonical "Calcedonian" Eastern Orthodox. JUst so you know. :)

Try looking up the 1025th Anniversary of the Baptism of Rus for pictures of ALL of the Canonical Patriarchs / Heads of churches together in 2013. :)

Thank You so much! I wondered what happened about all this? I didn't understand who the Eastern Orthodox were? Now, you've explained it in such a way that I have been able to finally grasp it! Very much appreciated! Thank You!
