1st visit to Patchway on the South Wales Main Line

Pathway first opened in September 1863 by the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway
It's been renamed twice firstly to Patchway and Stoke Gifford in August 1885 although the station name would revert back to Patchway in October 1908
Located close to a nearby Rolls Royce Industrial Area to the West of the station whilst a residential area is located to both North and East.
The station sits on a North / South with southern direction being towards Bristol Parkway and Filton Abbey Wood with Stoke Gifford Depot in between the triangle junction for services to and from Bristol Temple Meads head towards Bristol Parkway.
Present frequency Is that the station is served by hourly services to and from Cardiff Central to Taunton, Plymouth and Penzance which nowadays is provided by 5 car Class 800 and 802 IETs which displaced the former Castle HSTs in December 2023.
Other services such as Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour and mainline London Paddington to Cardiff Central, Swansea and Carmarthen services all run non stop through the station.
The only exception is that the only time London bound services would call at Patchway Is if the South Wales Main Line through Bristol Parkway and onwards towards Swindon is Closed for engineering works.
To the North the South Wales Main Line curves away although the Up line is lower level through Patchway Tunnel before passing Pilning station which is only served by 2 trains a day in the Cardiff Direction.
The line was electrified to South Wales in 2020 although in recent years plans to electrify the line from both Chippenham to Bristol Temple Meads as well as Bristol Parkway and Patchway remain a possibility according to GWR although will depend on cost and clearance at Bristol Temple Meads.
