I use this wine key: Forge de Laguiole Ebony
I have used this glass in this Video: Gabriel StandArt
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
2022 Deluxe Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc Western Cape South Africa
2021 Deluxe Chardonnay Limestone Coast Australia
Crémant de Loire AOP Brut France
Arestel Cava Rosado brut Spain
2022 Torre de Ferro Dão Portugal
2018 Kaiken Terroir Series Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza Argentina
2020 Agramont Garnacha Navarra Old Vine Spain
2019 Corte alle Mura Chianti Riserva Italy
The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
I know that most people don’t care about wine as much as I do - and that’s probably a good thing. When I drink wine I want to experience something special and I don’t buy wine at Lidl but many people do. Lidl operates over 11,550 stores in more than 30 countries and employs more than 376,000 people. The “secret” to their success is that they sell decent products at very low prices which is great for consumers, that aren’t too picky and or have a limited shopping budget.
Wine suppliers however that sell to the discounters are generally under a lot of pressure, having to fulfill very high requirements to be listed in the chains. They still do it as once you are listed at Lidl you get immediate access to a very wide distribution network and you start selling tens of thousands of bottles very quickly. The amount of wine that is needed to stock all shops in one market also means that Lidl cannot work with small to medium-sized wineries and instead mainly works with huge bottlers and wineries that can supply at least a hundred thousand bottles of the same wine.
The quality at Lidl has been improving over the decades but I haven’t had wines from Lidl that I wanted to drink over dinner… But maybe that changes today. My team has bought 8 wines and spent 50 € on those wines.

Next time you do a cheap wine tasting, add in one really high-end bottle so you have a surprise to look forward to. Plus it would be interesting to see whether the high-end wine tastes even better than it normally would next to the supermarket wine.

I would LOVE to see a video where you discuss the price of wines and the price they are sold in restaurants and the process of wine service that enhances the drinking experience and explaining the reasons behind paying a premium for wines in a restaurant. I know this isn’t exactly your usual style of video but I would love to hear your discussion on the topic and maybe a breakdown of some famous restaurants wine lists!! Thank you! ❤

As the „Weinmensch“ at an Edeka-group, this was one of the most entertaining videos of you so far. I laughed out loud quite some times! 😂 Your summary was what I tell my customers all the time, you get what you pay for. I love to guess along with you and was right at 5 wines. In Estonia LIDL has very few wines they sell, usually all of them are sweet/semi-sweet, so if I can find a dry wine, I might buy it. And this one time I did, it was a Reich riesling and it was drinkable.

For a long time I didn't take Lidl wines seriously, until I read a review of some rosé wines (including Markus Schneider, Knipser and Metzger) in the Süddeutsche Zeitung...and the most convincing wine was the Monalie Côtes de Provence rosé from Lidl - which would potentially be a real bargain. And yes, it is indeed a beautiful wine, a real lucky punch for the terrace.

On the one hand you are a brave, brave person to taste these wines, on the other hand I think I saw you die a little during the tasting...... Over the last five years I have bought two wines at Lidl: 2018 Pillitteiri Vidal Icewine 2020 Deidesheimer Riesling Selection from Deidesheimer Weinmanufaktur Both well worth the money, but certainly not in the category "far less then 10 bucks". I don't have lots of money to buy wines but I rather drink few wines of great quality then a lot at wine at less quality - I like to enjoy my wines.

I think there's great value to be had in supermarkets in France, e.g. during the foire aux vins, but hard discounters like Lidl is probably not where it is. It's probably better if you tried stuff you sampled from supermarkets under specific pricepoints e.g. (like 10, 15, 20, 30, 50) so that you don't have to go through the 5€ bottles collection of Lidl.

Hahaha. Had a good laugh as a South African from the Western Cape and a wine lover on no 1. On the colour and your taste description I pegged it as a Sb right away. Wine from grapes across the region suffers from that averaging and we tend to call that “Stellenbosch standard”. You have it 100 percent right! They are ok to drink but a bit boring. There are very interesting SB’s though from the Elim region and of course my home town where you find the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Thanks so much for the videos Konstantin. Your passion and excitement matches that of my family. We also taste for the puzzle and the novelty and not just for prestige or price. In fact my youngest son aspires to be a Wine Master. He’s advanced as far as WSET3 in theory so far and works on a ship as a Sommelier where he is getting good exposure to European wines. I also love that when you do German wines we get to hear the correct pronunciations!

Kaiken is always "shining" in those kinds of tastings. Los Chacayes is hallowed ground in Mendoza, but they make accessible stuff anywhere. I learned not to search for anything in this price point outside of Argentina, Chile, Douro, Alentejo, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Sometimes Cotes du Rhone can deliver there, but not frequently. Oh, and Carrau in Uruguay do a nice and really cheap Tannat, which is a small miracle.

Mainly for the UK audience... You should read The Best Wines in supermarkets by Ned Halley, Ned is witty and sarcastic. This is a great read, every year he's a best seller. He gives an overview of the main grapes and explain how the market evolved and then he goes through what he thinks it's good quality in supermarkets. Well, none of them were from Lidl in his list of 30wines of 2023.

I actually like you go through these cheap wines, as indeed a lot of consumers buy wine in the supermarket. I know it's bit of torture for your refined senses. )) I think for it's price the Chianti Reserva is not bad at all. Kaiken is decent too. In the past they had a nice Australian Shiraz for 2.99 euro, nothing deep or complex but decent and fruity. Unfortunately that idea bbq-wine wine became a big hit and after one year it was not available anymore. Maybe the buying price got too high for a budgetshop like Lidl.

I have two top faves from Lidl. One is from the Spanish Lidls, a Navarra Crianza 'Mezquiriz'. It was 2016, bought in May 2021. I was so knocked out by bang-for-buck [+/- €2.40] I bought 24 botttles - all but one on the shelf, which I handed to a guy watching me fill my trolley saying, "You gotta try this, hombre". Sadly, not stocked in the Lidls in Normandy. But when Lidl in Normandy has a wine event they stock a Colombard-Sauvingnon from Cote de Gascogne, aptly named 'Confindence.'. This is a fab apero wine. I won't go into wine-speak about it but just point anyone who sees it in its direction, to give it a go. And it goes ... When the wine events happen, this wine is always 'Buy 4, get 6', working out to about €2.35/bottle. Sadly, Lidl in Normandy don't stock an equivalent bargain-but-fab red.

I don't shop at Lidl if I can avoid it, let alone wine. That said, I'd give the Kaiken a try in a lamb stew.

I quite like the Agramont Garnacha so what do I know about wine? 😃. Lidl had a deliciously rich Nero D'Avola last year in the run up to Christmas here in the UK but sadly no longer stocked.

Well, I admit I do drink supermarket wines 🙂 Here in Czechia Lidl used to sell Summerhouse Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand, for 199 CZK (approx. 8 EUR), which IMHO is definitely an above-average wine (4,1 on Vivino, my Vivino rating is 4,2). In Italy Lidl sells some Italian wines with excellent QPR - for instance Carla Scala Governo all'Uso Toscano Rosso (Sangiovese) for just 3,79 EUR - and it's a decent, let's say average wine. Thanks for the video!

If such bland wines even get ratings in the 80s, it would be interesting to know, which wines there exist in the 50s (or even lower). Are wines in this range even sold e.g. in Germany?
