Mine would not interfere on my behalf because I taught him not to! However, he would always put himself between my wife and any threat! He was smart enough to do risk assessment, no, I guess he could smell fear and confidence! Heck, he even protected his kitties😂 but I doubt they are good fighters. I protected my dog from other aggressive dogs bc he put his big body there thinking being huge is enough! But then, I brought him up that way. I proved to him that I am the one breaking up dog fights. In our village I was known for that, he saw me breaking up at least seven fights so no need to intervene on my behalf! Oh snap! I forgot, there was one time he growled at a young woman! I had to put him into the house. My world fell apart, a) he'd never done that and b) I thought her to be friendly. So I told the bartender at the saloon that night and he asked who that person was? I told him the name and he laughed and said, " your dog's smarter than you son, she's a known drug addict and a thief. So yes, any dog will protect you, it don't take a fighting breed!
