I'm from Greece and the only business that you can start here is real estate (hotels - accommodations), preferably on a highly visited place from the tourists. The price per square meter is relatively cheap compared to the rest of the Europe and it has been going slowly upwards. The Golden Visa is also a cherry on top if you're a citizen outside the EU. If you choose any other startup, you will fail miserably, there is still not infrastructure to support any tech company.

Yeah that comment was very bizarre, I’ve never had a problem ever with healthcare in greece. I’m the the United States and visit every year. Every doctor visit has been quality and I’ve gotten in and out faster with less paper work. I was very disappointed by this comment.

To be honest I did compare this to Switzerland and there is a huge discrepancy. But Comparing it to the underfinanced NHS for sure there are better options

You couldn't be further from the truth. I lived 20 years in Germany and 20 Years in London. 1) UK has a free healthcare system, but all you get is antibiotics for everything and junior doctors practising on you whilst working for the NHS for a couple of years before going private. In greece you may pay to see a doctor like 50 euros and for your prescription but Greece has among the best doctors in the world, reminding you that the first ever person to practice medicine was greek. 2) Greeks are not fond of chains and brands. In UK every town has the same set up and it's boring and of inferior quality: Starbucks, Costa, Zizzi etc etc. Greeks appreciate individuality and I respect that. Businesses are family run and customers are not just a revenue stream. 3) Yes, Greece is corrupt but not as you think. Tax evasion is a national sport and that's why Greeks love to pay cash. The government loses out, not the people, which of course I'm not fond on. VAT and Tax evasion was at 10 billion last year, to the detriment of the government, benefiting the people. I'd go as far as saying that Greece is the onky country in the world where people have money and the government is broke, but do you prefer it the other way around? 4) let's put this into practice. Average salary UK? 35.000. Average house price UK? 300.000. Realistic deposit needed 20%. To save the deposit, live a little and buy a house and pay a mortgage? 45 years at best. In greece 80% of people own their homes and pass it down to their kids. In greece the grandparents look after the children in the UK you pay 1000 a month for a nursery place. You pay leasehold on flats. You pay council tax 1500 a year and if you are unemployed in the UK you get like 60 a week including rent. Good luck with all that. 5) Skilled workforce? Greece has the highest human development index in the world! In UK they voted for brexit. After the vote the most searched sentence was: What is Brexit? 6) Ease of doing business? Greece is digitalizing, meaning it's easy to buy a house and easy to open a limited company 7) Lastly, low income? High unemployment? The numbers are skewed. Why? Because we all have gardens and grow our own produce. We all have solar energy and utilize our own energy offsetting carbon footprint. We all work and get paid cash to avoid taxes. Now my biggest argument: You said we are 10.2 million people in greece correct?! Of we are soooo poor, how do we own 55 million houses? That's 5 houses each including children and babies. Greece has the best life. Beaches, forests, mountains, sea, neighbours who care, lowest crime rates, core values and most of all decency. What's the murder rate in USA again? Why did you scrap Obama care? Wasn't your last president trump, which got banned on twitter and was responsible for capitol riots and blaming the loss on his elections on rigged voting, whilst invading countries like Iraq for WMD and bullying their neighbour Venezuela , stealing all their oil reserves?! The country in the world with the most oil reserves is not Saudi or Russia, it's Venezuela, yet they are super poor paying for a toilet roll 15 usd each. Thank you for reminding us all, that looking at numbers and stats alone doesn't tell a story and that living in a country and ease of doing business has nothing to do with brand establishment, franchises and profit maximising but with making a change and understanding what need can I meet. Good luck dealing with your obesity crisis and oh by the way. The 55% obese I'm your country will be put on a Greek Mediterranean diet which is proving to be the healthies and best in the world. Thanks and I am out.

Thank you for the effort you put into this very detailed comment. I agree with some of the points but strongly disagree with your conclusion. As a place to do business Greece is terrible and corrupt. Also, many well educated Greeks move to other European countries to make a decent living. All of them return during vacations, but this is not enough for them to decide to stay. Btw I am not American but European and live in Switzerland, a place many Greeks choose as their prefered place to work.

@@AskMeStartUp The reasons why Greeks emigrate is that in Greece, 99% are Orthodox, music is Greek, Food is Greek, even if you try Chinese it tastes Greek and Greeks meet Greeks to make more Greeks, you get my drift. It gets tedious. I lived 20 years in Germany and 20 years in London. Turks emigrate for work to Germany, Indians and other commonwealth to England, for a better life, Greeks don't. The Greeks you see are the few wealthy families, who were corrupt and fled Greece to secure their assets. You watch tennis? Tsitsipas moved his family to Monaco. Why? Because it's a tax heaven! Greece is corrupt, I reiterate, but not as you think. In Switzerland, success in entrepreneurialship requires the same prerequisites as in Greece, it's not what you know but who you know. Unless you have got your definition of corrupt wrong of course. Corruption refers to bribery, to smearing, to people doing something they shouldn't as it's deemed illegal. In Greece as in Switzerland, knowing people in power opens doors, no doubt. Point being, not declaring taxes, paying cash and using your contacts to open doors are common practices in Greece and in Switzerland. In fact Switzerland was forced to change the law in regards to Swiss Bank accounts as it was hone to multiple terrorists, including Gadaffi and his son and oligarchs. Now that's corrupt! Bankgeheimnis! A heaven for corrupt Greeks. Conclusion, corrupt Greeks move to Switzerland as their Bankgeheimnis is in tune with their needs, whom we don't want here anyway. Period!
