Thanks for the hint about changing settings! Instead of changing settings I found that I could send the video to my webOS smart TV and that completely resolved the problem.
Once again, well done in explaining the difference between the two works, this video is very helpful. I am currently using Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon and I am considering the BDAG as my next lexicon. I saw "Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics" by Wallace on your bookshelf, great taste in textbooks! That book is a treasure. When given the chance, I would definitely buy the BDAG.
I have BDAG and Brill and I must be honest but for my studies of the New Testament I find BDAG to be more helpful. I got both of them on special on Logos 😁
Thanks Darryl - a very helpful overview. I've been learning Greek for 2 years, and have found that Gingrich's Shorter Lexicon (picked up for £6 GBP in a Cambridge second-hand bookshop!) is the most convenient for quick word checks. I prefer physical books, and BDAG (which I also have) is so heavy that I tend to use it for words that have more complex meanings. I've also got Danker's Concise that I got to replace the Gingrich, but it sits on the shelf unused mostly. A couple of years ago, me and my wife went on a short holiday, and I took my TBS NT, Gingrich, Mounce's laminated study guide, and had Daily Dose of Greek on my phone. This was enough for me to work through 1 John in translation. Now, I would probably take just the Crossway Tyndale Reader's Edition, and would try to read rather than translate. (although being in Europe, we can't go anywhere now anyway!)
These resources are so much better digitally - One aspect of biblical Greek I don't think I could go back to paper for is lexicons. The bulk just kills usability. Thanks for watching and sharing!
I have an old Souter's Pocket Lexicon printed in Great Britain that is about 60 or 80 years old, an old Kubo's Reader's Lexicon, my UBS dictionary, my Tyndale House Reader with helps, but nothing in the remote realm of a BDAG or Brille. I got desperate years ago and sold my Semantic Domains Dictionary. As a lay reader of the NT, I do not write sermons, so I try to focus on convenience, small books, and hobby - level Greek tools not particularly useful for professionals but things I get a kick out of. The greatest addition to my library of recent memory is Plummer's Greek for Life, his Daily Dose channel, and this channel. I also love my Tyndale House NT and my old 4th ed. UBS and my 1937 pocket leather GNT.
Like you I use BDAG first and love the layout option available in Logos. I also have Brill and hope Logos will soon apply the layout option to that too to make it easier to read.
I've just started studying and using Lexicons and have found the Louw-Nida quite useful and have been thinking about getting the BDAG and HALOT bundle as it's on offer atm :)
I appreciate your explanation as I am familiar with BDAG but not Brills. BDAG was on the required list back in undergrad for Greek class and at that point was the most hefty (both cost and sheer weight) purchase for school books. Grabbed it off the shelf today to look a few things up. It has now migrated from the Greek shelf up high to just at my fingertips for future use. While I do have Logos, I appreciate having the paper paper form as well. Throughout the years I have picked up the first and second editions of the BDAG off of our free bookshelf at the Seminary and the formatting has greatly improved for the third edition. Thanks for all the videos you put out. It has lite the fire for me to get back into my Greek.
Have you reviewed Danker's Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament? I usually use it whenever I study my GNT. It's very easy to carry around.
Thanks for this helpful review. BDAG remains our 'go-to' lexicon for the Greek Bible, though we sometimes consult Barclay's updated GE Dictionary to confirm lexical prefixes, infixes, affixes and suffixes.
For those Greek students who are also venturing into Hebrew behind Greek there is a cheap but useful lexicon to use along side BDAG etc. A Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament. It gives direct links to the Hebrew Equivalent in the Septuagint. This is quicker than searching using LXX in a BHS text.
I scored a copy of BDAG half price at SBL many years ago and I swear by it. I just wish I could recommend it for students, but my students need something cheaper and more streamlined.
After Dr. Danker completed BDAG in 2000, he began work on his The Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament; he published it in 2009. It is 390 pages. I just checked Amazon, and it is available used for $44.
Tara Jernigan . Mounce’s Analytical Lexicon of the Greek NT is cheap and is useful for beginning students but needs to be used with care as it could encourage laziness in parsing.

I got a BAGD secondhand for £10. Serves my purposes well though it’s not as user friendly as BDAG which is a bit beyond my means. Regularly use my trusty Abbott-Smith for rapid reading as it is much lighter and easier to carry and I like the way it refers to Hebrew and LXX cognates. Managed to find an ebook version of Lampe for free but it’s not easy to navigate. Still better than nothing for Patristics. Not certain I would get the value out of Brill or BDAG to justify the additional cost and shelf space compared with whatever else I could spend my book budget on - might be different if I were a professional scholar or pastor or could invest in one of the more advanced Logos/Accordance packages - but for now I do have access to libraries that have both that I could consult as needed.
I'm glad you bagged BAGD for a good price (sorry I couldn't resist). I cut my teeth on Abbott-Smith and though it's old it is reasonably inexpensive. BDAG is helpful as an electronic resource, but harder to find at a good price.
Thanks for your videos. I would love to see you investigate theWord electronic Bible. Its power rival the big 3 for an absolute fraction of the cost - and it has BDAG version 3. Its search capabilities in English, Greek and Hebrew are incredible. Darrel

Hi, I have three questions: 1. Which pronunciation do you use for koine greek? 2. When should there be breathing marks? I have looked for an answer to this question but I haven't found an answer yet. And what decided if it should be a smooth or rough breathing mark? 3. What should i learn after the alphabet, vowels, dophtongs, accents and breath marks? Am i ready to start learning words after learning that or is there anything more that i have to learn first?
I would suggest you learn the modern Greek pronunciation, the difference between Koine and Modern Greek is very similar. By the way Koine Greek never died in some Eastern Christian communities.
There are three basic communities: * modern Greek *Restored historic Greek * Erasmian I am in a community of Erasmian conversational Greek speakers that has helped me to internalize the language. The argument for Erasmian is that almost all consonants, diphtongs and vowels have distinct sounds when pronounced, and so beginner listeners can more easily recognize words distinguished and not confused with others. The rough breathing marks help with that. With modern pronunciation, does not use rough breathing marks, and many diphthongs sound like some vowels and much less distinction. This is harder for beginners to recognize "did he say this word or that word?" But there are millions of people using that pronunciation albeit it is for modern Greek, which differs significantly from ancient greek. Restored is somewhere in between.
@@betawithbrett7068 May I add the Eastern Christian viewpoint to your thoughts. Koine Greek is a very integral part of our lives. Since the advent of Christianity, we never had a day where Koine Greek was not spoken or read. It is a part of our very fabric, we also use modern Greek for conversations. We know for a fact that Koine Greek never ceased to decrease in our Church life. We view the reconstructed pronunciation invented by Erasmus the Catholic Priest/Theologian as a comical innovation of one of the oldest living languages to date. An example of the continuity of the Greek language is illustrated with the following words for blood. Blood from 2,000 years ago was αἷμα, today in modern Greek it is written as Αίμα. We never lost the language of Greek, minus new usages of words, etc., and the pronunciation is very similar and often indistinguishable. I wonder how such a word as Apple would be pronounced in 1611 versus Apple today? The Hebrew language died at one time, it was reconstructed in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Greek never had such a cessation. The Greek alphabet from 2,000 years ago is exactly the same minus the invention of small letters. Modern Hebrew/Biblical Hebrew on the other hand is vastly different. Notice the following differences, Modern Hebrew עִבְרִית versus Old Testament Hebrew 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕
I had the pleasure of getting a brand new condition BrillDAG (as I call it) recently at a bargain price, since the seller never used it over the LOGOS edition. It's the best 125 bucks I've spent in a long time. One of the most obvious benefits is the consistent and readable format, even having format keys at the very beginning, unlike the word salads of LSJ 🤣
I enjoy your videos... You briefly mention how you steer off from other lexicons.. Do you see any problems or inaccuracies with the old standard "Thayer's" lexicon? I have the paper and ink copy for well over 40 years and I have it heavily annotated. I hate to think it is no longer any good (although I wouldn't have a problem changing my mind and moving on to something else if there was ample reason). Thanks kindly.
Darryl, I appreciate your reviews of the various Greek resources available for NT studies. In this case I had not heard of the Brill lexicon and am interested in it after hearing your comments. Unfortunately you still seem to have a problem of focus on your videos. The text of the two lexicons that you showed was completely out of focus, even when you zoomed in a couple of times. That is very frustrating since I could not really see the differences you were talking about. Is there any way you can fix this focus problem for future videos? Jim M
The Arndt Gingrich lexicon is a great Koine dictionary. In case you don't know, the so-called Biblical Greek is in fact the Hellenistic Greek of Alexander the Great. (known as Koine). As for Liddell and Scott this old dictionary has now been fundamentally displaced by the new Cambridge Lexicon of Classical Greek. If you are wanting to learn the Koine Greek I would avoid a dictionary that is cluttered with Attic Greek or other Classical Greek dialects.
Hi there - thanks for posting this. I'm curious if you know in your Logos version of the Brill lexicon whether there is pagination. I noticed that the Logos BDAG does with the page numbers but I didn't see this in your Brill version (perhaps that was turned off?). I'm interested in buying the Logos edition but I'd like to know about that feature. Thanks!
Hi Darryl, not a question about BDAG but actually about the older Thayer lexicon. I have it on my shelf. I hear it’s not that great for today’s era, (based on newer research) but could I still use this to get some decent definitions? In the future, I do plan to get a BDAG, but just wanted to know your perspective if the Thayer is still somewhat reliable, or not. Thank you.
Hey there I have no knowledge in Koine' Greek and I've done some research on what lexicons to rely on. There are a few conclusions and questions I've come to: 1) That I can't use Strongs Concordance as a Lexicon. 2) The Complete Word Study Bible New Testament is reliable for a beginner trying to find the true meaning of a biblical passage (The CWSB Dictionary included). 3) I can't rely on an English translation of the Bible (Maybe to an extent, but not sure). 4) Is BDAG more reliable than CWSB? Please correct me if I'm asking the wrong questions or if I've come to the wrong conclusions. Just need some guidance here. Hopefully you see this. Cheers

You'll want to make sure you watch this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1gaiJB-0z3w.html), which will explain why word studies can be problematic (which speaks to options 1, 2 and 4). Some translations are better than others, so get a good translation (check out my review of the LSB at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NVfmgM5whh8.html) as a starting point. At the end of the day, unfortunately, you won't get the detail that Greek offers without learning the language yourself, and ideally without learning to read the Greek New Testament. This looks great, the problem is that I don't read greek. I have a pdf copy of this book but it is useless to me because i cannot read greek, thus I cannot look up the word I need a definition for. Any suggestions?

Have you learned Greek? If not, Vines and Strongs are good. You might also like the NIDNTTE, though it is much bigger and more expensive (mntg.me/nidntte | amzn.to/3iqCEAa). Don't forget that it is not just about word studies though! Blessings!

Just don't speak is like a sterile English speaker. Have fun, use an accent, and find out the correct pronunciation of all letters. Don't let the "researchers" tell you.
