Hi Alexia :) I greatly appreciate your videos. I just want to ask a question on this one please. At the end, in the "listening" section I noticed that some times you put a pronoun followed by δεν, followed by a verb pronoun. For example you say Εγώ δεν είμαι = I am not, however you mentioned that είμαι = I am and if we first put δεν, we create the negative of your sentences. Can we therefore not say δεν είμαι = I am not, and leave out the Εγώ?
@greeklessonsonlinevideos
@greeklessonsonlinevideos 3 года назад
Γεια σου! Ναι. You can say Δεν είμαι ( I am not ) and also Εγώ δεν είμαι (I am not). When we put the pronoun εγώ it gives more emphasis. However, it is not necessary to put it! Hope that helped 🙂

@@greeklessonsonlinevideos Thank you so much! :) It is incredible that you put all this content online but the fact that you even reply so quickly shows your passion for learning. I am born in south africa and despite having a greek father and name, never learnt the language so I am trying now :) PS: I may ask other questions as I go along :D Thanks for being so amazing!

1) What kind of "they" should we use when we are referring to a bunch of people and we don't know whether there are either men or women present there? Like for example "those guys in the classroom". 2) What's the official greek translation of Shakespearean, "To be or not to be"? Thank you.
@greeklessonsonlinevideos

1) when we don't know the gender we use the masculine form! "αυτοί" 2) Να ζει κανείς ή να μην ζει;
@andreasm5770
@andreasm5770 3 года назад
Just a bit more explanation for the phrase "Να ζει κανείς ή να μη ζει", if you care: As Greek doesn't have infinitives and also doesn't have the meaning of "to live" associated with the verb "είμαι" like English does with the verb "to be", we need to translate "to be" in this context as "that someone lives" or "should someone live", using the subjunctive with "να". So, literally: "That someone lives or that (someone) doesn't live?" or "Should one live or should he/she not live?" "Κανείς", which usually means "no-one" in this context can mean "someone" or "one", when you want to have an impersonal or unspecified subject.

would αυτό also mean ‘this’. For example, is αυτό είναι καλo (this is good) the same as είναι καλό if the ‘this’ im referring to is a thing (like a can of coke) not a person?

If you were to say "ewo eime", instead of just "eime" as an every day phrase instead of using it to add emphasis, would Greek people think it is strange or not understand?
