Well said. No need to re-invent your elegantly worded wheel of recent Greek history. The Greek state has not had stability since the mistake was made & it has been chaotic ever since the repudiation of the Monarchy. The Greek government would be wise to quietly repatriate their Royal Family & quietly restore what they lost. They would be better off in letting the wounds of past errors heal & move on to a more positive place in European history.

@jjgreek1 How many Greeks want the Monarchy back?
@miltospep21

The referendum of 1974 was 27% in favor of the King. There are some issues though 1) Constantine was not even allowed to enter Greece in order to make his case 2) even so a King is a constitutional leader, not a politician, so he is not even allowed to make his case in front of his people. A future King is a factor of unity and Constantine having to tell the hole truth of those who gradually overthroned him would divide the Hellenes, that had a solid belief on the "goodness" of some 3) if you see elections as a 4year repeating referendum, a 27% accepted politician in its lowest, has high chances of being reelected. But the referendum for the King was final. Things wouldn't have changed though if a referendum was conducted 10 years afterwards. You see the hole status established during and after the 1967 coop did not want the King back for different reasons. After 1974 these reasons mainly had to do with family vendetas. Andreas Papandreou, primeminister from 1981 till 1989 was the son of primeminister George Papandreou that had a severe confrontation with the young King during his sort reign (actually Andreas propably was associated with a group of military officers that prepared a "socialist elite" backround in the Army to make a "socialist" coup.) The case reached military justice and George Papandreou appointed his son as the Defence minister, whatever that meant for the case! King told him that was not proper, and he could appoint anybody else. George Papandreou was furious and accused the King of messing with politics and took an oath in front of millions of Greeks to overthrone him! The Greek word for this confrontation was "Ανένδοντος" and it was the exact word used by George Papandreou). All these are a long story back, and many Greeks are not fully aware of this dark case that sealed the fate of the young King with an all powerful Primeminister ... as an advice donnot oversimplify things believing in "people's free political choices". "Free choices" are manipulated and are perfectly manipulated by those who have the exclusive right, the skill and the rostrum to speak than those who are not even allowed to speak...

Well I think King Constantine is actually quite happy not having to be in Greece and see how the country is being destroyed by those who are "100%" Greeks. What we see today is the very sad results of years of republic in the hands of "100% Greeks" who don't love their country as King Constantine does. Poor Greece, only a miracle will save you from your our people.

@tanjatanya Yes, Greece is a singular case, that's for sure! As an optimist I would like to believe, that this "crisis" could be a purge although nothing indicates any of that at the moment....
@Rotebuehl1
@Rotebuehl1 12 лет назад
@tanjatanya It's not humiliating at all, on the contrary! This entire story is wrongly told! He didn't refuse anything! The king said, that his family doesn't have a surname, what is actually true! The republicans wanted to name him "Glücksburg" and he refused as it is neither his true name, because he doesn't have one, nor is it a Greek name! His suggestion was the name "Greece" (in Greek, of course), but the government refused! Which "obscure traditions" were you talking about?

@Rotebuehl1 Firstly the pantomime about the surname was simply gratuitous bloody-mindedness on his behalf. In Greece, as everywhere, including his close relatives, people have surnames. Secondly, the surname Glücksburg was also one of the surnames of Prince Philip before he changed it to Mountbatten. Thirdly, he was given the option of the surnames Παύλου, Κωνσταντίνου, or Γεωργίου - i.e. Paul's, Constantine's or Georges', the names of his father, grandfather and great grandfather. He refused.
@tanjatanya
@tanjatanya 12 лет назад
@Rotebuehl1 Very well. If we were to say that he wouldn't be wanted even if he were Greek and could trace his family to some mythical king of ancient Greece, would it sound better? Whether he is of Dane, Russian, or German origin, he ought to be entitled to a Greek passport like anyone of similar background in the same situation. This however does not give him a divine right to lord it over the country as a king, especially when monarchy is so fiercely opposed in Greece.
@tanjatanya
@tanjatanya 12 лет назад
@Rotebuehl1 Asking to enter a name on your application form for a passport is not a Greek idiosyncrasy. You'll find that it is the same all over the World. Prince Charles has one, and so do William and Harry. The unhappy Duke of Windsor signed as Edward Windsor,or just Windsor - he was a king too, and much loved, whose abdication was not the wrath of the people unlike DeGrecia's case. I agree, Greece will survive it all; and we may even have to pay again for it. Greece is a unique case!
@tanjatanya

@27GVF "Wonderful times": But not for those who were separated from their families and kept in concentrations camps on desert islands since the dictatoship of his uncle George II, in the 1930s, where they were kept without trial till the fall of the junta of 1967 which he supported because they were the German collaborators who reimposed his family on the country after WW2.

We also speak about "Greece" before the outcome of the Greek War of Independence, although there was not Greece as such before the Liberation. In Homer there is no reference to "Greece", if you wish to be pedantic. Also, Byron speaks interechangeably about Turkey and Greece, meaning ofcourse Greece, after the return from his first visit to the country. Furthermore, we all speak about America, meaning USA, and England instead of UK. Games of one-upmanship are tiresome and do not appeal!

@Komnenit That Greek pettyness! The king of Sweden is not a Swede, but a frenchman with some German mixtures in between! But he is Swedish as Swedish can be! The Swedes regard him as a Swede! He was born in Sweden, he was brought up to service the Swedish Nation, his mother tongue is Swedish! But Greeks, noooooooo! They are all soooooooo special! The king is no Greek at aaaall! He's an intruder, he's a tyrant, he's a this, he's a that! Well, stay happy! I'm not Greek and shouldn't care!
@tanjatanya
@tanjatanya 12 лет назад
@Rotebuehl1 It is not an issue of citizenship. In principle he ought to have a Greek passport. However, he refused to produce one on the grounds that his Danish family does not have a surname. But wait a moment. Since the family has Greek pretensions how does it happen that he gives priority to some obscure tradition of his own country? Wouldn't it be a noble gesture towards the Greek people if he had shown some readiness to adopt their customs? Is it so humiliating to have a Greek surname?
@tanjatanya
@tanjatanya 12 лет назад
@Rotebuehl1 Whatever the Swedes do is what the Swedes have chosen to do. With the Greeks is different. Yes, they are special. It is the fact that they despise unelected governments that made them so different and shaped the democtatic West as we know it today. Yes, not perfect; but we are striving inch by inch to make it better. If this man had any dignity he would have accepted the choice of the Greek electorate as he often stated in the foreign media. But his actions show otherwise.
@tanjatanya
@tanjatanya 12 лет назад
@Rotebuehl1 You made a response and then removed it. Here is mine: Mountbatten is an anglicised version of one of his mother’s surnames: Battenberg, which was also the surname of his uncle and guardian Lord Mountbatten (formerly Battenberg). Glücksburg was one of Prince Philip’s surnames, (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg,) shared also by his father and his deposed uncle, who was responsible for betraying his European allies and for causing the Asia Minor disaster.

@Komnenit What a pathetic weak comment! How can you say he is not Greek. How must a family live in Greece before they are Greek? Of course he is Greek, he remains the anointed Sovereign of the Greek people Long may he Reign!
@euridike88

Yes! The future of Greek/Turkish relations is very uncertain. Yet, in Greece today they find it easier to vent feelings of "patriotism" by inventing more easily magageable "enemies":- e.g. Jews, Communists, Freemasons, etc. We have seen this happening in Germany after WW1, when enemies needed to be invented in order to "unite the nation" and take its mind away from the real issues.

Difficult to follow what you write. The referendum that abolished monarchy was the second within a few months. The % against monarchy was almost the same. The first referendum was not accepted because it was carried out during the dictatoship. The second referendum is internationally accepeted as the only democratic referendum relating to the fate of monarchy in Greece. There has never been a royalist party in Greece, although there was an insignificant group of monarchy sympathisers.
@Rotebuehl1
@Rotebuehl1 12 лет назад
@tanjatanya I know where "Mountbatten" came from! I even happen to know the real Battenberg myself, which is a rather boring mountain peak in Hesse! Now tell me: if all other families have surnames, and my family wouldn't, then you're suggesting that I would have to "adapt", just because all the others have a different family tradition than mine? And because someone says so, as it seems "strange" to that "someone" not to have a surname? Did I get you correctly?

Who are the "most of the Greeks" whou would like the monarchy back? The experimental institution of monarchy, imposed on the Greek people by Germany, Britain, Russia and France, the leading powers of the day, has been abolished in Greece, like slavery, and there is no way going back. The Greek people after 90 years of these Danish/Russian/German drifters had enough.

Here are the historical facts. From 1918 onward the Greek communists worked the Turkish interests, like dogs barking for not knowing what. While from 1922 onward the Turks enjoyed real peace and total pretentious metling in WWII the Greeks got butchered all this time by their own communist instigated stupidity. Even now, as I write these words, the Greek communist mental unions go on strike and the tourist money go to Turkey. Komunes koproskila, is obviously true life based description .

@Rotebuehl1 I speak about the alleged tradition of his Danish family not having a surname. Even if that was so. Since he wanted to play the part as the "king of the Hellenes" he could have made an attempt to produce a surname like any other Greek since antiquity However, the abolition of monarchy does not have anything to do with either his name or his ethnic origins. Even if he could trace his family back to Pericles, still he would have to go. The decision is final - period.

The issue is not the % of their "Greekness". The politicians were democratically elected. If they proved unsatisfactory you have the choice of not voting for them again. In Western democracies every citizen has the inalienable right to stand for political office - irrespective of ethnic background - as long as they entered the country with a sense of democratic values determined to work their way up like every other citizen. Did this clan of adventurers enter Greece in such a spirit?

Monarchy is in its nature feudal, whether parliamentary as in Britain and Skandinavia, or autocratic as in Saudi Arabia, or as it used to be in Russia and Greece. Monarchy in its present form is a medieval conception. In ancient Sparta it was a different system altogether which rendered the two kings more accountable than even today's British monarch. On the otherhand kingship in the Bible is based on meritocracy - which is far removed from kingship as we know it.

@Kozani1948 The people of Greece, Cyprus, and Asia Minor had a taste of the brand of "unity" brought to them by them, from which they have not yet recovered. Do you see unity even in the microcosm of RU-vid? They go out of their way, even after almost half a century, in order to cause division in the country. They enjoyed democracy in Britain, where they grew old and prospered. Their obsession with Greece is becoming tiresome and downright silly.

@swiminbuff In 1960 many Greeks would have been more concerned about relatives and loved ones who were held under appalling conditions since before the German invasion by the regime of his uncle George II. Most Greeks could not afford the money or the time to train for such an expensive Olympic event. Incidentally, the gold medal was won by the whole team. Do you know, or have you ever heard of their names? Greek or not, it is irrelevant. The electorate voted to abolish monarchy in Greece.

What is the true sexuality of Constantine II ? As I understand, perhaps his 'mariage du reson' with a princess from another royal family and fife beautiful kids, he is bisexual or gay. However, everybody in the European aristocracy know many stories about Constantine at his first decade in England, when he was a very good, very close 'friend' to some powerful bankers and Conservative politicians in London and New York. Of course, he can`t live this openly until the last day of his life. Sad.
