I married and lived there for a year. I lived in the heart of Athens. The Greeks are very friendly and the water/beaches are gorgeous. I walked all over the city exploring by subway and car. I also was lucky to visit an island. The food is AMAZING and spoils you. I loved the open markets of amazing fresh food and all the outdoor cafes!! I loved moussaka (their eggplant dish) plus everything else. The desserts are incredible too, lol....❤❤❤🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷

@SpartanLeonidas1821
@SpartanLeonidas1821 5 лет назад
Umur No it does NOT! Moussaka is actually an ARABIC word and probably created by them originally when they introduced the eggplant to the area. So it is not Turkish..Im sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️ We all share these foods, with different variations. The Greek variation is the best however with the Béchamel that was added by the Constantinople born Greek Chef Nikolaos Tselementes. The Greek Moussaka is a much different dish today than any other variations because of this. Have a good day my friend! 🤚

@@umur77 No you are wrong ! I don't want to be racist or ethnicist , but Constantinopole( as you may know it Instanbul ) is Greek because of the Byzantian history . Turkish enslaved Greeks for 400 years ( approximately ) . When Greece became indepedent , it was a fact that 2/3 Greeks lived outside the country . If you turned the clock back and saw Instanbul in 1830 - [1922 ]( when the Micrasiatic Catastrophe took place in which Greeks and Armenians were slaughtered violently ) you would see a lot of neighbourhoods with Greeks . And that's how dishes were made and passed on to Greece like Dolmas , Baklavas and Mousakas ( they were made with spices , vegetables and other ingredients by Greeks who couldn't afford Medeterrenian ones ) In Greece they are called "Politiki Kouzina "

ibrahim TÜRKOĞLU I think you need a bit of an education and to step away from all the propaganda that the likes of Erdogan and the other FEW deluded fellows in Turkey may be teaching you. The actual truth is that the overwhelming majority of “Turkish” cuisine in Concepts, and even Etymologies to an extent, is based on Greek Byzantine, Arab & Persian, Levantine, & Armenian cuisines. Just off the top of my head, here are just a few Greek words in “Turkish” used to describe various foods, fruits, & vegetable: Lahana--------Lachano Fasolya--------Fasolia Pirasa---------Prasa Maydanoz-----Maintanos Anason------Anithos Kalamar-----Kalamari Ahtapot-----(O)htapodi Taramas----Taramas Kefte---------Kofto Makarna----Makaroni Lazanya-----Lasana (Lazania) Pizza----------Pitta-Pissa Pide-----------Pita Somun--------Psomon(Psomi) Beksemad----Paximadi Karamela----Karamela Salata--------Salata ([S]Alata) Kiraz----------Kerasi Visne---------Bissino Mersin--------Myrsini Kapari--------Kappari Ahlat---------Achladi Pastane------Pastes Tarhana--Trachanas(Traganos) Koni----------Konos Fol-----------Folia Midye--------Midia Istridye------Stridia Istakoz------Astakos Kerevit------Karavida Istavrit------Stavridi Iskarmoz----Skarmos Karides-----Garides Sardalya----Sardela Ton-----------Tonos Kefal---------Kefalos Levrek------Lavraki Uskumru----Skoumpri Iskorpit-----Skorpios Supya------Soupia Sarpa------Sarpa/Salpa Voops-------Voops Orfoz-------Rofos Enginar----Agkinara Krem-------Krema Kaktus-----Kaktos Acur--------Aggouri Recine--------Retsina Efes------Efesos Bira---------Bira Defne------Dafni (Dafnofyllo) Kestane----Kastana Findik-----Fountouki (Pontikon) Marmelat---Marmelada Margarin---Margarini Melas------Melassa Mantar----Manitari Bezelye---Bizelia (Pisos) Araka------Arakas Arasit------Arachida Ciroz-------Tsiros Apsent----Apsenti Cagaboz--Tasaganos Frisa------Frissa(RegaKapnisti) Iskender(Kb)-Alexandros Lakerda----Lakerda Difana------Difano Sari Papatya- Papadia Chamomili ^^^^But again, word etymology doesn’t say the entire story. Greeks can’t take any sole claim for Pizza, Lasagna, Pasta, & Macaroni, even tho they may have built or first documented the main foundations for them and named the original early dishes themselves, can they? It was the Italians that made those dishes world famous. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The majority of the dishes in your cuisine is based off of the ingredients found exclusively in the Middle East & Mediterranean Region..you believe they brought those foods and ideas from Central Asia from near Mongolia? Again, with all due respect, that area has one of thee poorest soil indexes in the world. The Turks picked up all cultural aspects of the peoples they came into contact with, and the Ottomans were the first to compile more universal & modern standardizations & cookbooks of all these various foods & recipes that they compiled in their palaces, and also gave their names to them which all the people within their empire began to use to describe them with. A few more Greek words found in Turkish Kitchens: Gastronomi----Gastronomia Aroma------------Aroma Glikoz-------------Glykozi Gluten------------Glouteni Gram--------------Grammario Gliserin-----------Glykerini Botanik-----------Botaniko Peptik-------------Peptiko Fosfor-------------Phosphoros Diet---------------Diaita Doz---------------Dosi Kilogram---------Xeiliogrammo Gram-------------Grammario Organik------------Organiko Afrodizyak--------Aphrodisiako Nektar-------------Nektar Tilios---------------Tilio Dagar--------------Tagari Izgara--------------Schara Fici-----------------Boutsi And just a few examples of foods as well that are NOT Turkish in concept or etymology: Kurabiyese----Qu-rab-yeh (Arab) Cacik-------------Cacig (Armenian) Musakka--------Musaqqa'ah (Arab) Fistik-------------Pistah (Persian) {Byz. Pistakion} ^^Basically upwards of 80% of “Turkish” words for Seafood come from Greek & many nautical Terms in general.. Words we Greeks use such as: "Tzatziki" for example comes from Armenian Cacig, or Kourabiedes comes from Arabic Quara biye. Yogurt has been attested for in Greek sources and Cookbooks (yes the oldest cookbooks are Greek) since Ancient times called Oxygala (Acidic Milk) & eaten with Honey & Nuts the same way it is till this very day! Of course, even stuffed Grape Vine Leaves we find from Ancient Sources and Cookbooks that the Greeks called them Fylaion, meaning: "Of the Leaf" that clearly describes the rolling of ingredients within a KlimatoFyllo [Vine-Leaf] and other types of Leaves as well. All these ingredients (Vine Leaves, Olive Oils, Figs etc) are abundant in and around the Mediterranean...unless you truly believe all those Ancient and much more advanced empires waited for some of the Nomad Turks to teach them how to “Roll” a Vine Leaf and call it “rolled” or “stuffed” in their language? Thats laughable and quite delusional at best. Mousakka is not Turkish either, it is an Arabic word meaning "chilled". Also the word Baharika we Greeks use also comes from Arabic Bahar NOT from Turkish Baharat. PS, as a “fan” of linguistics, I was SHOCKED to see how much Arabic & Persian is in the Turkish language btw. Anyways, the Greeks most likely took those Arabic words from them during the Byzantine-Arab Wars as do all peoples end up trading goods and ideas through any interaction throughout history. The Greeks later on in the 20th century improved their version of Moussaka greatly with the addition of the “European” Bechamel sauce by the Constantinople born chef Nikolaos Tselementes, and has thus become much different than most others in that variation, not to mention made famous since then mostly in the Western World by Greeks. The word Mezze is either from Persian Mazza for "Snack" or from Greek "Mezaion".... meaning "the middle" in reference to the best cuts of a meat! Fistik- The word for Peanuts used by the Turks, Fistiki by modern Greeks, is taken from the Arabs whom couldnt pronounce the letter “P” from the original word of Persian Pistah. The Byzantine Greeks called them Pistaki & Pistakion through this original Persian word as well. Now for Gyro & Souvlaki, one of my favorite subjects regarding food. Souvlaki Grills found on Santorini 1700 BC: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4d/Akrotiri_terracotta_firedogs_with_zoomorphic_finials.jpg ^^^3,700 years ago!!! You can clearly see the cut openings for skewer placement. Homer's iliad (written 800BC referring to a war that took place in the 1400-1300BC) mentions Obeliskos grilled meat being cooked and eaten by the Greeks (Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus) outside of Troy... The word etymology of the word “Souvlaki” is very interesing, it comes from: Greek: Obeliskos Became: Latin: (S)ubulos ^^^(Just like Yper & (S)uper) & was re-loaned (as a word) back to the Byzantines as Souvla...which gives us our modern day word Souvlaki. This is why even today in Greece the Shops that sell them are called: Souvlatzidiko (Modern Word) OR Obelesitirio (Ancient Word) How can I prove this to you? Well, Obeliskos also gives us the word OBELISK, the pointy Needle-Like Steles that are found in Egypt, can you see the Connection between: Obelos---A Skewer Obeliskos-Obelisk (O)Belos--Arrow (O)Belona-Needle ^^^All pointy tipped objects. Final point (no pun intended) on this being that the Ancient Greeks and many peoples way before them had mastered the turning/rotating “skewered Meats” concept many thousands of years before any Turk stepped foot anywhere near Anadolu aka Anatolia. Not to mention that Historically Greeks have made their Souvlakia & Gyros with PORK meat, something that the Turks like good Muslims I believe were not allowed to eat. And lastly on this subject, even if some other people or nation did “steal” or “borrow” or whatever..the idea to skewer a piece of meat, or to roll a leaf, or to strain Yogurt, is it really that important to you, every Human shares ideas for food, this is part of basic Human Interaction, no? Its not like someone stole your world Class Turkish Philosophy or Art did they now? 🤓 Anyways my friend, hope this little Historical rant has opened your eyes a little bit..🤷🏻‍♂️ PS, my best friend is Turkish :). Now cut the Hate out & stop trying to spread your stinky propaganda.. Thanks!! 🤚

Jonathan Ellis the Joke is yours. Greece is An incredible country and heavenly cuisine. Its dishes reflect an incredibly diverse cuisine of thousands of years of history with countless of records. - The oldest cookbook in the world is made by the Greek Archestratus, 350 BCE And the oldest diet in the world that exists is the Cretan Greek diet. Aside from the fact that diet means in Greek "way of life" The island of Ikaria are one of those many reasons why Greek cuisine is incredible. For there is no place on earth with more people getting into the 90s and higher than there. And wherever you came from, have a little respect. Because I hope you're not a jealous Turk or something, then I would understand the lack of intellect in your comment. because then after your next jealous answer I will tell you specific facts to where you came from and to how your nomadic life (on some of the poorest farmlands in the world on the grasslands in Mongolia) had a very primitive cuisine based on almost entirely cattle/animals not even 800 years ago, before Turks where the latest people to enter the Mediterranean in 1000-1200AD and Inherited Greek cuisine and empire and everything with it that was lightyears ahead where its capital constantinople was a huge culinary center in the far and wide regions when the Greek kingdom of Byzantium fell. Luckily as a admirer of Greece as a whole I have had years of Investigating in its many aspects to even history,linguistics, archaeology and so on. Nice that the Joke is for yourself, but next time it wont be anymore, when I make the Joke for the rest of us.

The fact alone that the Turkish cuisine is a Mediterranean cuisine, based on Mediterranean ingredients, already makes your comment USELESS. Because you Turks didn't have any of these ingredients when your poor nomadic Turkish forefathers where still scouring the poor grasslands of Kazachstan/Mongolia where almost nothing grows. Your comment is with utter lack of intellect and is utterly redundant. Now scram

We were on a Greek island a few years ago. The harbour was very pretty at night, lots of tourists and 'tourist' restaurants. All with waiters beckoning you to come in. Not my thing.We walked inland about half a mile and down an alley we saw 3 tables with candles. We wandered down and met a very charming greek lady who took us into her kitchen and showed us her food. No menu, just a few simple meals to choose from. A lovely lemon chicken soup. A bean dish I think called Fasolada. A meat layered pasta dish with lovely greek salad. Grilled fish. Spanakopita, my favourite! All very simply cooked and delicious. While we ate she went to the store to get us some wine and some cold beer. A delightful lady. We ate there often and the 'menu' changed daily was half the price of the tourist areas and way better. We always tipped generously.

I'm very very glad you came to Athens, the town I was born and I'm staying, even for a day. I have watched your videos for some time now but to tell the truth I signed up with this. Your first stop, Stani, basically the name means "sheepfold" from the sheepfolds that traditionally make one of the traditional Greek yogurts from sheep's milk, is there since 1949. Your coffee stop is next to Central meat and fish market, officially called "Varvakios market" from the name of the beneficial Ioannis Varvakis and it works unstoppable since 1884. The restaurant Epirus took the name from Epirus, a traditional region at Northern Greece, because the man who opens the store was from that region. Patsa, with the tone at second a, as you said is a must after a hangover for the ingredients it has and someone has to put in, red hot pepper flakes and vinegar with garlic and we usually eat it at early hours of the morning after a ...night-bar visit. Ariston, your cheese pie stop, does not make the traditional cheese pie BUT they make a unique cheese pie since 1906 (1910 you see at the label is from 19 -1906- and the number of the street 10), with actually feta cheese in it and not some feta cream you can usually eat. Cheese pie and spinach pie are the most common pies at Greece but, you must know from were to buy one. Miran one of the best shops you can buy and try pastourma, among other delicacies, in Athens, since 1922. Ntolmadakia are made with vineyard leaf and rice, the ones you eat, or rice and meat and served with oil and lemon. Koulouri is a snack that you must eat it early morning if you want it very fresh. Loukoumades are originally served with honey syrup and walnuts and is a must. Chocolate and other toppings are the modern version of them. Last, the souvlaki. What i can say for it.. our addiction national street food. You eat it at Monastiraki square, in the old town in Athens, were is the famous flea market. Hope next time to meet you, feel free to contact with me any time, you or anybody of your friends or followers, we can have a "tour" in Athens, to see her like the Greeks do... ;)

Just a tip for those who are not Greek. Para para: Take one take one. When the man at 22:27 opened the container and said "para para", that is his way of telling the customer to help themselves. It's a social thing for venders and very polite. But since Luke didn't know Greek, the man had to quickly re-collect his thoughts and give Luke one and ask if he wants one by doing a hand gesture. I laughed for abit, since I am Greek and saw the slight embarrassment fall onto the old man's face abit. But I want to help travelers out. So some tips from a fellow Greek: 1. Travel with someone who knows Greek. 2. If someone smiles at you and said something unrecognizable, smile politely and say "American-o" as if you were Spanish. They will understand, and adjust to help you better. 3. If you are not traveling with someone who knows Greek, it might be a good idea to least learn Hello, Bye, Thank you, and the numbers for your visit. 4. If that is too much effort, at least do your best to participate in the culture. Greeks are very inviting and enjoy it greatly when people partake in the culture, even if they do not know our language. 5. Dance with them when they form a circle and kick feet. You'll look funny at first, but everyone does. After awhile you'll notice the pattern, and recognizing it and keeping along with it, means the world to Greeks. 6. Do not be afraid to eat with your hands! It is a Greek thing to do, and every Greek does it. EVERY SINGLE ONE. And it isn't seen as filthy, and no, not as compliment to chef. It is seen as natural and something they never saw as wrong. But if you eat spinach pie with a fork, you may get some weird glares. I encourage you to eat the spinach pie with your hands, it's how it's meant to be eaten. (along with many other foods) Some words in Greek: Thank you: efcharistó (EE-farie-STO) Hello: geia sas (YA-sas) Goodbye: geia sas (YA-sas) (google search will tell you those two words are not the same, just trust me. they are.) Good morning: Kaliméra (KA-lee-meh-RAH) Good night: kalinychta (KA-le-neh-TAH) That is all I can think of for right now. I hope this helps anyone traveling to Greece! -Angel

As a Turkish guy (not Mongol nor arab) I just wonder why all theese anger, why? Both Turks and Greeks have an extraordinary old and vast history and culture which, for sure, includes cusinery. Yes, we have so many things in common that can not only be confined by the topic of food. If you are a Greek person you will feel home, especially when you are in a western side or Aegean side of Turkey. And I see in this video most Greek people just appear and behave like Turkish people and I would be feeling like home here in Greece. Please don't rush easily and no one is a thief here. I know some of you will write bad and ugly words here below the comments but some of the nice people regardless of their nationalities and religions will get my point. And you womder why we hate you? And don't you dare compare our histories. We gave the world scieνce, art, philosophy, democracy, Olympic Games, medicine and created the greatest civilization of this planet. You only killed and stole other countries properties. What would Greeks do? You are the one who needs to wake up and study some history. They didn’t do it just once. History repeats its self. I've been to many, many towns and cities in Greece. I have eaten a lot of things there that I would never have had a chance to eat in the US. My favorite escapade was when me a three other friends went into a 5 star restaurant in Athens. I thought I had learned enough of the native language to not worry about help with the menu. I had been wanting a big piece of beef sirloin and open broil on flame to well done. When my steak came it sorta resembled a piece of top sirloin but that is where the likeness to a beef steak ended. What I ordered evidently was a horse steak. I gulped down my wine and then I ate my salad. Well, I could see there was nothing to do but try to save face. I cut into the meat and to my surprise I probably didn't even need a knife, because it was so tender and juicy that I couldn't believe it. The steak was as good as any I had ever eaten. Maybe I hit on with an exceptional chef or something but I think there is a reason for the 5 star rating system that makes sense sometimes.

99% of Greek streetfood/touristic cuisine comes from anatolian Greeks instead of mainland Greek cuisine. And there is a reason behind this: traditional Greek mainland cuisine is strongly pasta based, something that in a touristic level is already offered by other countries around the world

Erman Tunca I am a Turkish girl, many residents of Turkey think that the Greeks stole their traditional food, but it is not, Lavash (Doner) is Armenian national food, the word (LAVASH) is an Armenian word and is translated “light bread, flat bread” Yoghurt was invented in Greece during the Roman Empire, Kebab is Russian and Caucasian food, Olives are also from Greece, perhaps a lot in common but no one stole from anyone, Lokum is the food of Georgians and Armenians and name (Churchxela) with nuts and grape juice. In turkey have Hatay Doner in Turkey many Turks think that this is their style, but Hatay Usulu is the Syrian style of Doner. I am a Turkish girl, but I am ashamed of the stupid Turks who don’t respect the culture of others and don’t study history. The Turks have always been like that, the Russian Empire destroyed the Ottoman Empire since 1520, and in the First World War, Russia seized Turkey to the city of Erzurum and Ataturk surrendered; after World War I, the ataturk appealed to the Communists to return our lands to us. Study history in Turkey propaganda works well if not for the communistic idea and communists, Istanbul (Constantinople) would have been Russian. many people say that Turkish coffee was stolen, they didn’t steal in this restaurant and in this video says “Turkish coffee” it means it’s not theft, by the way MacDonalds is also American but in Turkey they also prepare burgers, which means the Turks have stolen it from the Americans? you are very stupid...

Its not coincidence. These foods are part of anatolian Greek tradition, and significantly differ from mainland Greek, which are way more southern European and less oriental. Speaking of oriental, the same food is common in all of the levant, not only among Turks and anatolian Greeks

Reminder that Turks appropriate Greek culture. Baklava has its origins in the eastern Roman placenta cake. Turks (a Turkic-Mongolian people with no relation to Anatolia) appropriated the modern variation after the invasion of the ERE (Byzantine) empire.
