That boat plane is a terrible idea for one reason alone - efficiency. Aircraft today are able to be fuel efficient because when they fly higher in the atmosphere, where it's thinner, they're able to use a less dense fuel mixture. That means that they higher up you go the less fuel you use. At sea level you're basically just burning the most fuel possible. It's also not safe or even possible to get it to go at a faster speed than what was shown because any faster and lift takes over and it just turns into an airplane. What's keeping it in the air is something called ground effect. Basically it has just enough lift to get into the air and have the current of air coming off of its wings create a small pocket of air under it. A lot of new pilots find out about this little oddity when trying their first few times landing. What would normally be a slow enough landing speed will get the pilot into this ground effect and can cause them to overshoot the runway. Luckily that's what the instructor is there for, and they tell the student to ease off the throttle and down they go onto the runway.

That plane/boat thing has me thinking...Why do planes fly so high over seas? If the engine fails you're gunna die from the mile high drop and smashing into a thousand pieces when you hit the sea. Why not fly lower so that a drop wouldn't be so bad? I'm sure there are a hundred reasons as to why this is a shit idea ^_^ But what are they?
