Green Diamond Motor Ring Job

This GRD233 I just put in my truck has been smoking like a chimney, all signs point to ring failure. Rebuild kits are expensive for the GRD family of motors and I'm not ready to tear this thing completely down and rebuild it from the ground up. So I opted to do a ring job. Here's what it entails.
I apologize for any audio issues later in the video, got a new camera that I'm still learning the ropes on.

Pulled the head off my 49 KB2 today. The engine hadn't run in 40+ years and was seized. Alternating tiny bits of pressure on the flywheel teeth/bell housing finally loosened it up with my 50% acetone/50% ATF filling the cylinders. Zero compression even after oiling the cylinders-must be valves. Pulled the head; yep, each cylinder had valves stuck open; probably the exact position they were in in 1981 when it was parker on the edge of a tobacco farm. Finally got all valves except #1 and #6 exhaust valves to retract with the spring pressure. Lots of carbon on everything. Tops of pistons show IH 62220 R2 followed by a D. Substantial ridge which I'll ream out to pull pistons. Not looking forward to pulling manifolds to get to the valve work but I guess it has to be done. Thanks for these videos-wish you had more.

I’m so happy I found this, can’t wait to watch your other videos. I just brought home a 49 KB1, an older fella had pulled the motor in the 80s to work on it then had a stroke so the family just dropped the motor in the box and parked it in a shed. I’ve been really struggling with what to do with the truck as to whether I want to swap in a bigger motor or look for a donor green diamond. I’m definitely going to tinker with the original motor for a bit first after watching this. Can’t wait to make it through the rest of the videos, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information out there for IHC trucks. THANK YOU

Sorry to comment on almost every video you do, but these things are incredible. I think they rank among the best automotive video's out there. You explain everything in such detail and give info that just isn't available anywhere else (at least that I know of) . I watched your install of door glass. You even have a cutaway door to show how to put the channel in the door where you can't see it! Are you kidding me! Who does stuff like this? These will be classics for KB enthusiasts.

With the forty-over bore on the already stroked 233 Cu Inch GD engine it should be around 250 cubes now. I've considered swapping the 214 crank in my 49 with a 233 crank for that very reason. Keep us posted on how much of a power increase you might noticed over the old 214. Maybe a cruise speed between 60--65!

Wish I would have watched this 6 months ago. I started a 1948 kb2 that was sitting for 30 years. I changed the oil and filter, had no idea that it needed to be primed. Ran it for 30 minutes. I think I destroyed the pump and #2 has only 20 lbs compression now. I tried to prime the pump by removing oil float and inserted a long tube. I attached the other end of the tube to the hood and filled it with oil. The oil flowed through the engine when spun over only when it was gravity fed, It couldn't suck it in. How do I keep the oil pump frame from falling down when taking apart the pump?

Glad I found your channel, I am looking at a ks5 international. Very complete but the engine is stuck oil looks really good on the dip stick. Looks to be parts are not easy to get. Is there a place you can advise me on parts. Very good video. Thank you for sharing.

Is rust around the sparkplugs a concern for the Green Diamond? I am not sure if water just got on the engine, or if it is internal and coming out.
@BareKnuckleBinder
@BareKnuckleBinder Год назад
I've only ever seen water pool in the plug indentions from outside. Water/coolant from inside the motor (from a blown head gasket or cracked block) would exit a valve or leak down the rings before it worked its way through the plug threads.

Hey do you know where I could potentially find piston rings for a 1936 green diamond?

What’s the motor’s serial number? Standard rings or oversized? Rings are available, just gotta know exactly what you’re looking for.

Great Video. I had two Questions On head bolts do you need to seal threads ? My motor that was rebuilt the used pipe tape. Also did you use a thermostat ? thanks Andrew
@BareKnuckleBinder
@BareKnuckleBinder 3 года назад
Both great questions, head bolt threads should be clean, no thread sealant and absolutely no pipe tape. You should tap the bolt holes just clean the threads in the block for more accurate torque readings. Oiling the head bolt threads is acceptable, but keep in mind that will alter torque specs due to lowered resistance. I definitely have a thermostat in there, just didn’t include that footage since I was fighting to keep the video under an hour!

@@BareKnuckleBinder I had a guy rebuild my 214 Has been doing motors over 30 years For some reason he had Pipe tape on threads Who knows . @@kb748 that’s bizarre. Never heard of it. I know some newer V8 motors use pipe tape on some water pump bolts. Never heard of taping head bolts. Those old thermostats will last indefinitely if they don’t get damaged. Always a good idea to keep an eye out for NOS spares!

I had a question for you about the Indian slack on the head gasket do you think it’s better to wait till dries completely or just put it on tacky then assemble because I was kind of reading on the back of the bottle I just wasn’t sure what’s the best way thanks
@BareKnuckleBinder
@BareKnuckleBinder 3 года назад
This is a great question. Wait until the shellac dries completely. If you assemble it tacky, it will push out the sides of the head. It will push out somewhat anyway, but assembling it tacky gives you a 50/50 chance for gasket failure. When I did this ring job, I put the shellac on the gasket and let it dry for a couple of days before assembling.

So, if BKB has moved on, does anyone know where to find the rings for the GD 214 motors? Even the GD 233 rings would likely work as the increased displacement was gained by stroking it rather than boring it out.
@BareKnuckleBinder
@BareKnuckleBinder 5 месяцев назад
Hey there, sorry I haven’t been watching my RU-vid notifications as much lately as I should. Are you needing standard size rings or an overbore? It can be a challenge to find GRD rings just by searching them through truck or engine models, I’ve used NOS off brand rings the last few times I’ve needed rings, there’s also the option of finding rings by size, go by each groove. Anyway, let me know about any oversize info to narrow it down and I may be able to help you.

@@BareKnuckleBinder Thanks for the reply! I did finally get all valve springs to pull valves back onto seats. It looks like the 233 you've got has 4 rings? Hard to tell. The shop (Precision Engines in Middletown, NY) that just shaved the head may have a line on some rings for my 214. They are the same as some old Studebakers: 3/32 for top two compression and I believe 3/16 for the oil ring....not sure yet. The tops of the pistons have IH logo and part number 62220-R2 stamped on top. Same issue with finding bearings; I'm not pulling the engine or crank for machine work ( no room here) so will go back in with new rod bearings but same dimension, standard or otherwise. This KB2 last ran in 1981, then sat on a Connecticut tobacco farm. I should have pistons out by Sst 4/20 to verify bearing and ring configuration-thanks again for conscientious work and presentation on your cornbinder.
@Jamestfarrell
@Jamestfarrell 5 месяцев назад
I got #1 piston out today (1949 KB2/GD214). Took it to Precision Engines in Middletown, NY and we both agreed that both the piston and rod bearings are original IH. Rod bearings are marked 'STD', which I suspected due to the original pistons also being standard. I noted that this is a four-ring piston, including the one piece oil ring. We looked through a lot of manuals and supplier parts books and settled on Federal Mogul for standard bearings. The rings are another question; no one lists them. The closest I can come are for a Studebaker with the same 3 5/16" bore: they are the two 3/32" compression rings and one 3/16" oil ring. This means I'm going to have to reuse a salvaged compression ring. All the old rings were free and unbroken. Got my fingers crossed for the other five pistons. Of course, I'd rather get a complete original set but I'll settle for what's available unless someone has a better idea. BTW-I ain't pulling this engine out! Thanks.....

@@youngengineer6697 there’s actually an Ace Hardware green spray paint that is an exact match for the GRD green. I have a case of it somewhere from the last time I rebuilt one, but I actually couldn’t find it while I was in the middle of this project so I just used Rustoleum (I believe it was ‘Forest Green’ or something) to get it covered. It’s close, not exact. If you can wait, I can get you the Ace p/n when I get back to Texas in a few weeks.

I think it is interesting that most modern diesels have that kind of oil ring. One iron piece with holes cut in it, and a spring. A few years ago, I some someone rebuild a VW VR6, and was surprised to see that kind of oil ring. My first thought was "Who puts diesel engine rings in a gasoline engine?" Looking at the list, it looked like many German and Swedish gasoline engines were built that way over the last 60 years. I don't know why it is common there, since over the past 60 years, 3 piece rings are what you would see in most American, Japanese, and Korean engines.

@@BareKnuckleBinder I'm with you there. Honestly, the main motivating factors for wanting to do the 345 swap were that the Green Diamond 233 in my K-5 is stuck tight, and warrants a full rebuild. A buddy of mine sold the 345 and T19 to me cheaper than I could find a gasket set for the Green Diamond. I didn't feel like it was too bad of a bastardization of the K-5, since it technically would be staying all IH that way. Either way, I've got a long row to hoe to get it ready for the Red Power Roundup in 2022.
