Shirley Grey. What a looker. She was in "Twin Husbands" also. Here on You Tube. A must watch. Starring John Miljan. You'll love it if you are into B&W oldies.

Gorgeous Charles Startett !😍 He always reminded me of a cross between a young Joel McCrea and Harrison Ford . My favorite movie of his is MGM's "The Mask of Fu Manchu" with Myrna Loy and Boris Karloff. He plays a very "Indiana Jones" type character in that one.

I often watch for the "background action". @ 35:48, the detective steals a cigar from the victim's humidor and Starrett spots him. While the Chief is questioning someone else, Starrett & the detective stare at each other, while he prepares to light up. Great directing!

& acting, Starrett is so casual & off the cuff funny here, from his $10 to be a yodeller comment to his use of the ridiculous costume for physical humour, his big football jock body parked on the stairs in lederhosen investigating a murder, I think @ 1 point cop (who he keeps bantering with) says I've had enough of your comedy & later, after a shirtless scene, cop says something about not getting his pretty body shot. Almost as funny as diapered boy toy getting whipped, stroked, fondled & drugged into zombie sex slave by Myrna Loy & Boris Karloff in Mask of Fu Manchu. Even 1st lead he's in unitard bathing suit seducing Miriam Hopkins on the beach while tossing off early Preston Sturges' dialogue. He played wide variety of roles in early films before getting typed in Westerns & did dozens of those for over a decade. Still looked best in a dinner jacket, how he debuted with the Barrymores, before starring in historic The Viking.

Read up on Chas. Starrett, and was quite impressed! I became a fan in his long run as 'The Durango Kid', and it turns out that not only did he break hollycrap's mold by staying married to his one wife for over 60 yrs, but he also pushed his actor's ego aside to continue starring in westerns, in which he was in great demand! I admire this man!

Quite an accomplished dude, 1 of the founders of Screen Actors' Guild, educated, versatile. He along with Buster Crabbe & Kane Richmond were beautiful college jocks who became successful stars of serials & B movies but were never given their due, more talented & interesting performers than most Hollywood leading men of their era.

Is my stupid sign on crooked? I got completely lost in the rats nest of names, characters, relationships, movements, statements, lies and intrigue, with everyone talking as fast as machine guns, but that's the norm for me. But it might help a little if the final paragraph of the mystery were legible.

Plus talkies were still in infancy and sound recording was such that it didn’t pick up everyone’s voice clearly, esp in scenes with lots of movement and people turning this way and that. For me the enjoyable part was watching Charles Starrett!

Well, I'll be doggone. To enjoy this particular film you must suspend belief in your own being. How else can a cop send everyone else home after a murder except for a few "choice" people with zero investigation? And prepare yourself late for a "pseudo-confession" letter read by that same cop that seemingly goes on forever. I honestly thought he was going to go right into the Gettysburg Address after he finished reading it! And to put the film's only humorous lines in Charles Starrett's mouth is simply a crime against nature. The "second banana" cop here is wasted.
@unowen-nh9ov
@unowen-nh9ov 2 года назад
Big hunk o' roast beef Starrett is hilarious, from his ridiculous opening costume to his indifference to the cop's bad attitude & threats toward him. Also, cop has much funny banter, even b4 bullying lead, "Take that cabbage outta yer mouth!"

Which is too bad because he was actually quite versatile, as were his untrained athlete actor peers, Buster Crabbe & Kane Richmond, they were never A list stars but game for anything & acted in every genre.

The police arrived just as the killers killed themselves & the lead was a mystery writer, of course he (2 finger) typed about it, after sending the romantic leads on the honeymoon they were attempting @ start of movie.

Hate when they show written or typed stuff, don't read it out loud along with it, and it is so fuzzy and out of focus on the screen, you cannot decipher a single word of it. Such a Shame They should do a subtitle or caption under it.
@unowen-nh9ov

The sight gag of big jock typing makes it worthwhile, Starrett basically transcribes end of movie as finish to his novel.

The movies were made for the BIG SCREENS of theaters. That WOULD make s great difference on the written words.
@anombrerose6311
@anombrerose6311 2 года назад
@@robertwalker5521 I know, totally agreed. I know they have reasons for what they do in filming, but sometimes the showing of it isn't in the ideal conditions the makers are hoping for. I do know they used to "voice over" the actor who is reading, or doing something he is pondering about, so that its like you hear their thoughts. They prolly don't even think of it, generally.

I'm on a table top PC with a wide screen, I had it on the smaller "full screen" 15" wide, The letters were big enough but too fuzzy. Couldn't read one single word of it. They should transcribe it with subtitles or accurate caption, or a voice over!
