Cool Water EDT was one of my first colognes in my youth - I always have a 200ml laying around, just to wear casually around the house and run errands. You should do a modern, kickass take on it, Aaron.
It is interesting to note that both GIT and Cool Water were created by Pierre Bourdon(de facto secret in-house perfumer for Creed from 1980 - 2005) who in my view is the greatest niche perfumer of all time and along with Jacques Polge(Chanel in-house perfumer from 1978 - 2016) are the two greatest perfumers of all time. Obviously Jacques is the greatest designer perfumer but don't ask me who is better between the two in general. Pierre might have been more creative(perhaps because he wasn't constrained by a "Chanel" style of fragrance) but Jacques' creations were exquisitely crafted with quality second to none on a designer budget no less. It seems that Pierre Bourdon put Creed on the map, without him there is no Creed. He may even have had a hand in the creation of Aventus after he left Creed given that one of his proteges is the perfumer of Aventus and that a year earlier Pierre put out a fragrance that smelled quite similar to Aventus. But it doesn't stop there, rumour has it that he in fact had a huge hand in creating Joop Homme. Almeraic is given credit for it but apparently Pierre was working on it but was removed the last minute with Almeraic coming in to finish the remaining 10% of the job. Fast forward to 2003 and Mont Blanc Individuel is released which smells remarkably similar to Joop, two years after that Original Santal by Creed is released which also oddly smells very much like Joop. Turns out Pierre Bourdon was the perfumer for both of those fragrances. Why would he produce two fragrances that smell similar to one another(not unlike what he did with Cool water and GIT once again two years apart), well more than likely because that scent DNA was his invention all the way back in 1989, he felt a certain ownership over it. Pierre Bourdon's notable men's creations: Confirmed: - YSL Kouros - Creed GIT - Cool Water -Creed EROLFA - Creed MI - Creed SMW -Mont Blanc Individuel - Creed OS Most likely: -Joop! Homme -Creed Original Vetiver -Possibly other Creeds between 1980 - 2005 Influenced/possible involvement: -Creed Aventus As for Jacques Polge, well he created everything that Chanel released from 1978 to 2016 except for some reformulations/re-releases he made for Chanel classics that were originally released before his time. That obviously speaks for itself!
Fascinating history. The strange thing is that I love and own Original Santal but I hate the scent of Joop. I mean it's absolutely abhorrent to my nose. Hard for me to connect those.
@@brandonl6626 It's very interesting you mention that. I own Original Santal and agree with you it is by far the best of the three and one of the best Creeds(in my top 5). Now this is not absolutely confirmed(Pierre Bourdon's authorship of Joop Homme) but there is enough evidence to support this while it is outlined in in Gabe Oppenheim's book "the ghost perfumer". Do note that he is only responsible for the scent DNA, it's possible that Almeraic changed it for the worse and Individuel was more in line with what PB had in mind. Nevertheless, I used to own it and considered it one of my favourites way back in the early 90s when I was a young teenager. There is no doubt of it's impact in the industry and the market. It was without a shadow of a doubt along with Cool water the go-to fragrance for teenagers and young adults in the late 80s early 90s. Cool water was and still is one of the biggest sellers of all time but back then Joop Homme was also massively popular(not so much these days). I agree with you though as it is no longer to my taste, it's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination but OS is the perfection of that style so I see no need for owning Joop and no longer consider it collection worthy. The similarity is there for sure but obviously OS is made with higher quality ingredients and far more timeless than Joop which was a product of it's time. Nevertheless it is one more feather in Pierre Bourdon's cap due to it's impact in the industry/fragrance community and it's about time he started getting the credit he deserves for his work thanks in no small part to Gabe Oppenheim's research. PS: I was also never a fan of Kouros but it too was massively popular in the 80s and upon revisiting it I can see why. If you can overlook the animalic notes it is amazingly fresh and invigorating, the quintessential barbershop/powerhouse fragrance. Sadly as with most such fragrances I cannot get around the strong animalic notes.
Similar to Aventus, he was also the teacher of Julien Rasquinet, who apparently perfumed Royal Oud, so you can smell a bit of his influence there as well. It’s nice to see Bourdon getting more off the appreciation he deserves these days. Definitely one of the all time greats. ...and of course shoutout to Edmond Roudnitska, the teacher of both Bourdon and Jean-Claude Ellena (as well as an inspiration to, and family friend of, Frederic Malle). That’s quite a legacy to pass down.
Thanks for a very well presented and deeply knowledgeable comparison(love all the chemical references). I was curious to try the fragrances as they were created by the same man(Pierre Bourdon). Its a shame that Creed sold out to a soulless asset group(BlackRock)...However, thankfully they are now back with a luxury group in Kering who hopefully will reinvest in natural ingredients and a quality product above pure profit. Im Irish and born in 1985, so I feel Green Irish Tweed is calling me. Sláinte
You have to compare the Vintage Cool Water with the cursive Davidoff and Cool Water in cursive. Smells much nicer than the current Cool Water and better than GIT. The Vintage CW gets me compliments about 75 percent of the time unsolicited too.
Creed was bought by Kering a French-based multinational corporation specializing in luxury goods. It owns the brands Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent, Creed, Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Puma, yet Puma the sports company. So Creed will (most likely) become just another money making business.
Just ordered a vintage patch Cool water from early eighties! To compare with today's version I'm so excited to proof today's fact that original is always far beyond over todays product! So I bet today's Cool water is not Cool, it's only Water😂
Really old vintage Cool Water was more natural and particularly that faint tobacco and sparkling oakmoss drydown Shame the next thing is GIT but some clones do get very close to old CW, sans the IFRA naughty list ingredients.
Awesome video. What did you think of the Cool Water Intense with coconut note? You should do a video on DAVIDOFF Cool Water fragrances. Parfum, Intense, Grapefruit and Sage, Reborn. I’d love to know what you think of the 80’s ZINO DAVIDOFF for men. Be Good, Stay Safe…👍
There is nothing wrong with creating an inspiration fragrance especially when the goal is to improve upon a classic profile. I mean, is every oriental on the market a dupe of Shalimar? IMO there’s a big difference between a dupe/clone and a fragrance unique in its own right but admittedly takes inspiration from an already established fragrance in the market. Especially if said established fragrance has been out for quite some time.
For an"AVERAGE JOE"there is no difference in the air. Huge difference in price is major problem with GIT. OTHER THEN THAT GIT IS A TIMELESS MASTERPIECE.the only FINE REMAINS from the house
Paying for the Creed when cool water exists is insanity. Anyone saying they aren’t very similar or that the difference is distinguishable to anyone around you is just lying.
If youre looking for content ideas, i thought if ANYONE is qualified to give a unique perspective on layering fragrances itd be you, since presumably youd know which aroma chemicals in two or more fragrances would play well together without fighting for supremacy or cancelling eachother out.....just a random thought i had in passing
I like both of these very much as air fresheners but I do not feel this DNA is something a person should wear on their clothes or skin. I held onto a bottle of clone Aspen for the air freshening purpose.
GIT’s one of those fragrances you just can’t stop sniffing on yourself, it’s so fresh and nice, and I could see Aaron was doing the same thing, he was loving it, so I think he’d be ecstatic to have an updated version of this in his line up, it would also sell like hot cakes 👌
Wearing ‘KUNT’ it arrived today and loving it. GIT is in my Top 5 of all time so for ATH to bring out an updated version in his own “wall of fragrance” style is superb news, praying to the fragrance Gods he goes through with it 🎉
@@ncpmadhead I’ve never smelt Tuscan leather to compare but it opens up like a raspberry jam and morphs into leather and patchouli with some dirty notes and a bit oudy. I pick up more patchouli than leather but it’s incredibly well blended, you think you’re smelling one thing and then it changes to something else. £30 for an ATH though you can’t go wrong mate👌
I used to steal sprays of my dad's Cool Water, Drakkar Noir, Farenheit, and Eternity when i was like 12 and wear them to school. Those fragrances will also have a soft spot in my heart. PRAYING Maxaroma gets a restock of your fragrances along with the new ones soon.. trying to hold back on purchasing any more fragrances so i can splurge on a dozen of yours 🦄
Dear Aaron! Can you please review the new aventus F batches? people say creed reformulated aventus for the better now and i would love to know your take! 🫰🏻
I love GIT. I’ve never smelled Cool Water, but when I let my girlfriend smell GIT she said it smelled like something in a blue bottle her dad used to use and I was like 😳. I mentioned cool water and she said yes. That hurt. Also I have metal cap GIT and at first I didn’t feel like I noticed it for too long but now I get a solid 5 or 6 hours out of it. Performance isn’t that bad.
I got a big bottle of Cool Water for $20 at Marshall's (a discount retailer in the U.S.) and it's been a good "dumb reach" fragrance for the summer. I was fortunate enough to sample Green Irish Tweed at Bloomingdales, and found the fragrances to have a very similar DNA. But, I don't think I like either fragrance enough to pay "Creed" price. But at $20? All day.
They were both created by the same perfumer, Pierre Bourdon. He developed GIT for Creed. He left Creed and created Cool Water for Davidoff. I love Cool Water. It's been one of my favorite fragrances for years. It's close enough to GIT without breaking the bank. Thanks for another Great Review!
I've had both for years and only use GIT when I'm dressing up. Cool water is a decent enough copy but there's a world of difference between the two to my nose. OK for casual/office use etc though.
as a fellow chemist, I really appreciate that you can dig into the actual molecules used in the formulation. all other faces in the community just stay on the generic descriptions
2 of my favourite fragrances, along with the incredible unique and discontinued CK crave. Git is just a complete timeless masterpiece, i just wish it lasted longer. And definitely Aaron if you did a git inspired creation i and many others would buy it 👍
I might just go back to buying Cool Water as my go-to fragrance if it's really so similar to GIT. I really loved Aventus so I thought I would give this a try, just a shame it only lasted around 5-6 hours. Not what I would expect from a $300+ bottle, but here I am again spending another $300 on the GIT. Can't see myself buying from Creed again especially if Cool Water is created by the same person, basically no different to the untrained nose, and 1/10'th of the price. That's insane.
I never liked Cool Water back in the 90's, I'm not a massive fan of Green Irish Tweed...but I do love Aaron's take on this, with his fragrance Guapo. It's so much smoother and creamier. Similar notes but just better. In this Vid he's basically telling you how he's gonna do it better. He is a man of his word.
There's a reason they're so similar; they're both originally by Pierre Bourdon. Bourdon was wanting to make a dihydromyrcenol based fragrance after figuring out that it was at the heart of Drakkar Noir, and Olivier Creed conned Bourdon out of the formula halfway through development. Bourdon kept refining the formula until we wound up with Cool Water. 😁
Cool Water makes me think of my late dad, and for that I will always have a bottle, but for my personal taste it's too synthetic. Is Green Irish Tweed worth the money? No, I don't think it is. If all you care about is the end result of the fragrance, Cool Water will get you something very similar for 1/10th the price. Do I regret buying Green Irish Tweed? Not at all. It smells too good to regret. Great video, Aaron. Keep em coming.
Nice to hear your review. GIT overall is a nicer more robust scent but I don't think it's worth the price. I only get about 3 hours until it's barely noticeable. I wanted to love it but I don't think I'll be getting a bottle anytime soon 😔
I have both GIT and Cool water. GIT is great don’t get me wrong burn it only last maybe 3 hours on my skin. Haven’t tried it but would you recommend maybe layering cool water to have more longevity?
Kering bought Creed. Let's see what happen to creed to in the future Kering in a french corporation that also owns Balenciaga, Gucci, Sait laurent, Brioni, Bottega and many more.
I like green irish tweed berry mutch but I can't get over the stale castle smell ancient or aged. if that wasn't the case I'd buy the bottle I'm deff going with aventus original and the absolu
I have both...now seems that everybody have or had GIT...everybody have money to buy it...buy something for to much money and it doesn't perform..crazy or trying to be snobish?..before 10 years it wasn't very well known house...we forget that Cool Water was the most selling perfume..we forget that it was revolutionary and many copy that scent by this day..I would always choose Cool Water(not bog fan,but it is clean, fresh and I had so đany compliments when I wear it
Your Fake annihilate’s these two. I absolutely love Green Irish Tweed but it’s falls flat too soon. Fantastic skin scent but I honestly don’t think it’s as good as Fake.
green irish tweed was my first ever perfume, given to me back in 2006 or 2007. its the only one i wore for over a decade. still love it, dont wear it much now as i fell down the fragrance community rabbit hole and when i would wear it i grab bois eternal instead. but once that runs out ill probably go back to GIT unless you release another bois eternal or your own take on a better version of GIT
As someone who remembers the Cool Water craze of the early-mid 1990's and has smelled the current version, I will say the current version smells very synthetic and metallic compared to what a brand new bottle of the original smelled like then.
Great review Aaron! Your take on cool water would be brilliant! Like you said an updated and amped up Version would be amazing! Cool water was my signature for years back in the day, loved it from the moment I smelled it back in 1995
i have yet to be able to try one of your fragrances ( cause they are always sold out) but i love the reviews and content on this channel and frag-mental's you guys are blessing me with new videos today!
I'm sticking with Cool Water as I don't find GIT/Cool Water very special tbh. Not worth the money for GIT. Creed has much better frangrances and my favourites are Millésime Impérial, Royal Oud and Himalaya. True that the last years they destroyed the brand and its reputation. Hopefully it will get back to where it was but unfortunately don't get my hopes up... Buying older batches it still is...
Green Irish Tweed is my favorite fragrance of all time. I've always loved how smooth and clean it smells. On my skin it does pretty well and if I over spray I get some pretty decent longevity out of it. The price is a bit steep but I will usually only wear it a few days a week. I like Cool Water. But to me it feels a bit synthetic and stale compared to G.I.T. They are similar for sure but IMO, if you have experience with fragrances in general? You can tell the differences right away. That being said, I will wear Cool Water for a work fragrance from time to time. Cool Water is a great fragrance for the money, but Green Irish Tweed is just simply a great fragrance.
Its exactly like what ATH said, in the air they smell similar. Sniffing it on skin is where you can sense the naturals in GIT,its like smelling dews in fresh cut grass. Again same in the air and most people would not be able to tell.
I love your brand and hopefulness for Creed but I'm not holding my breath that a private equity firm will do something to make a newly acquired business less profitable. P.S. Onyx Extreme is my most complimented fragrance. It's brilliant!
Cool Water EDT smells identical to Black Ice air freshener. Nothing wrong with it but I can't wear the EDT now because I don't want to smell like a chav.
Ohh really cool comparison for the video, Bourdon is a legend. Would love to hear you review Jean Claude Elena's work for Hermes (Hermessence, Colognes), although those are probably not your style, they usually have lots of naturals and crazy high quality craftsmanship. Cheers
Really interesting video - I have cool water, knowing it's budget but great fragrance (a bit synthetic imo but can't beat the price to add it to a collection). I have a partial bottle of old aventus, but no other Creed frags, albeit I've heard a ton about GIT. Would never have thought they were a similar scent profile!
Every time I watch Aarons videos where he explains things, my mind tells me I understand but in reality, I don't understand mostly everything lol. Damn you my gullible brain!
The only fair comparison would be with the vintage cool water which is of a much higher quality compared to the what coty is making these days. The vintage is strikingly similar to GIT.
@@michaelacevedo9404 True, thou it's mainly the Vintage Formal of Cool Water which smell " Similar" which usually means it's 75% ( of above) Copy. There's also a Stronger version of Cool Water which he didn't have at the time which really built it back up to the OG formal and add a bit of a modern twist.
Green Irish Tweed is one of my personal favorites, I tried it on a vacation this past summer and it always reminds me of that. Great and inoffensive, timeless, lasts but not too too long to the point where you’ll smell it on your clothes for a week. I think worth the cost but only if you’d wear it as a signature scent everyday
