Hello and welcome to Controversial Coasters with Contriver, a series where I discuss extremely unpopular opinions that I have regarding roller coasters or amusement parks and attempt to justify them even though 90% of the community will disagree with them!
In this episode, I discuss why I believe Green Lantern: First Flight, an Intamin ZacSpin formerly located at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California was a criminally underrated roller coaster and was actually fantastic!

Not SFMM Viper; Green Lantern was supposed to be relocated to La Ronde in Canada and it was gonna reopen as "Vipère" but the project was canceled

I mean, I still think the worst ride in SFMM history is Flashback. I can't form an opinion about this ride, but I just can't see anything being worse than Flashback lol. That thing was just godawful. My entire family got off that ride with crazy headaches and whiplash😬

It's pretty bad. The bar slams down on your crotch and it wasn't even fun; both guys and gals alike couldn't wait to get off of it lol

I’ve ridden it 7 times in its lifespan and I will agree that it was an amazing coaster before the modification. Afterwards….. my opinion of the ride was mixed. My very last ride was when after the mid course drop, my side of the train flipped upside down and remained in that position into the final brake run. Ended up getting one of the worst headaches I’ve ever experienced on a coaster… like Psyclone/Flashback status lol.

I agree that every now and then it gave awkward and uncomfortable rides, but to me that's just part of the chance you gotta take when it comes to free spinning rides like this!

I've been on GL many times and always hated it and yes it was painful and not fun. Ironically my daughter liked it and she was sad to see it go. I still say Flashback was worse and the worst ride I have ever been on. That Intamin Space Diver made SLC seem like kid rides.

My name for it was the grunt lantern. Hated it and rode it twice. Once forward and once backwards. That was enough.

Been reading the comments. This is straight polarising, up there with Skyrush with how several people agree with him and others saying they personally hated the ride. And looking from someone who never even went to SFMM, it might have been impossible to guarantee the good rides all the time, due to the variations in body weight between different people. The thing that people would hate would be doing the intense drops upside down, getting all the G’s in their head and neck. If that can be avoided, then it could be alright-great, but I’ll never know.

Have you ever been on any of the S&S free spin rides? I'd be curious to know how they compared with what green lantern was.

Yes, I've done Batman at Discovery Kingdom and Joker at Great Adventure; they are definitely more 'natural feeling' and you get tons of flips, and are super fun in general, but they are nowhere near as intense or aggressive as Green Lantern was. They are conceptually almost identical, but ride experience-wise, they are almost nothing alike

I personally find myself very neutral in the discussion. I think it was just fine. This is my home park and I was a teen when this opened. My friends and I thought it was alright but other coasters were our favorites. I'd hit it if the line was good but I wasn't upset when they announced it was closing. The new Wonder Woman ride looks amazing and I can't wait for them to finally finish repainting Tatsu.

I wouldn't have been too upset about it closing either because it was getting relocated, but now that the relocation is cancelled, I'm much sadder now. :( On top of that, the new coaster replacing it isn't even that good (I've ridden the identical clone, Jersey Devil Coaster and wasn't too impressed.)

@@M-NL2 Oof, that's a bummer. I don't think I would have gone to Canada to experience it but the only other Six Flags I've been to was Cedar Point and that was what got me into big coasters when I was little so I just like to ride everything.

I have gone to gröna lund and ridden insane. Its super fun but i can imagine it would be terrible if it rotated less.

In my personal opinion I thought Green Lantern was alright, but I didn’t really think it was as bad as people said it was but one of the issues I had with the ride was the rattle I think it had one of the worst rattles I’ve felt on a coaster and I think that’s why it was hated so much however it didn’t completely ruin the ride for me and yes I have actually been on Green Lantern.

It was a wild ride. I rode it a few times before they changed it and it was super fun! I didn’t like the ride after they changed it and when they started being extra picky about evening the weight on both sides. I’m glad I got to ride the 1st iteration of it 😊

Amen. People always said that i was just trying to be a contrarian, but it’s a great coaster. Almost no other coaster offers forces (no turns) in the manner that GL does and that makes it unique. I also think this coaster is better for taller people

Yeah whenever I hear about this it's always the bandwagon of people going "worst coaster ever" or "ride this if you never want children" i've never ridden it so I don't know if it's painful but the layout for a freespin looks like a lot of fun and pretty forceful.

i regret not riding it tbh :/ id ride riddlers first and have my legs/c*** fucked so bad i wouldnt want to suffer more pain in the same day. i heard the ball smashing rumors from my friends before i ever heard about it online and i let that deter me from getting one ride. i hope i get to ride at least one zacspin in the future

I definitely agree when you say that enthusiasts forming an opinion on a coaster without riding it is invalid. Sure you can give your thoughts on how a ride looks, but you can’t just flat out say a ride sucks unless you’ve ridden said ride and you truly think it sucks.

Coastoons try not to come to conclusions and make full videos on them or subtly saying they suck without riding them or before he rides them (Millenium Force, Arrow Loopers, X2, Velocicoaster, Mako just to say a few hes done)

I 100% agree. I marathoned it with my brother years ago when it was so hated that it had line so short you only had to walk on. Its was one of the best rides at Magic Mountain.

Without a doubt it’s insanely intense. However all the most forceful parts are when you’re heads facing the ground. this means your collar bone feels like it’s gonna snap and blood rushes to your head making it feel heavy and then giving you a headache. The last flip was actually good but other than that this ride was 💩

Steve Jewett 0 seconds ago I’ve never had a problem with Green Lantern. I think most “coaster enthusiast”, and I hate that term because most “coaster enthusiast” don’t even like rides. All they do is hate. I call it the American Idol syndrome. They watch Simon Cowell and think it’s their job to critique everything and see how much they hate rides. And yes they just follow the trend. Here’s an unpopular opinion, X2 very overrated. But again everybody thinks they are supposed to like it. Fun ride, but overrated. Same thing. Just following a trend

I don’t know how it’s even possible how the ride could be as bad as it is regarded as. It didn’t have bad restraints, it wasn’t rough. If it was because of the positives on your feet then why do enthusiasts like freespins and riddler? I don’t get how it’s possible. An argument can be made for not liking Ghostrider and i305 or liking either of them because of ride or forces preference but calling this the worst coaster in the world? Enthusiasts should get a grip lol if this is worst in the world there’s no way In hell there is a such thing as a bad coaster. I haven’t ridden it before so take this with a grain of salt but if roughness, restraints, and forces aren’t the problem I really don’t know what to say

The few rides I got on it were fucking great lol I loved the ride. Crushed my leg one time but loved it. I went into a ride with an expectation once.... Cheetah Hunt... Oh boy... Overrated as hell. Manta at SeaWorld San Diego is WAYYYYY better. OH! & Vipiere or whatever it's called now got cancelled
