At 10:24 when I say that neither Razor nor Aya has appeared outside of the show, that is incorrect. Aya has appeared in several Smallville comics, as well as in the New Earth continuity (Green Lantern Vol 4 #65), and of course she has a cameo in Justice League Action. And of course a year after I made this video Razer appeared in Young Justice. My apology for the misinformation! Here's the music playlist for this video! ru-vid.com/group/PLTTb7_0Go3b1cwKpt2zleEPG8uRtu2xhz I neglected to mention how dope the music of the show is. Razer's theme in particular is very emotional and feels very connected to his culture. While the music can feel a little generic at times, they at least made unique tracks for each episode and scene.
Your a lad.thanks for reminding me about this show. It still hurts they canceled it but maybe one day we can get the support for these shows that deserved it.
Another show I'd love to hear your opinions on is Tron: uprising. It was on Disney or something but it is comfortably one of my favorite animated shows of all time. The story was just phenomenal. If you haven't seen it I COULD NOT recommend it any more. Especially if you love shows like GL then this should be like Christmas.
@@mattterrell4304 Same here. to my knowledge "Green Lantern the animated series" was one of the last great shows on Cartoon Network before the latter of which make a wrong turning point. But if we wanna blame whatever caused that show to meet a premature end, we can most likely blame the 2011 live action Green Lantern movie for being made (Cause that movie was not impressive, thus leading it to become a box office failure). I mean, you think that the series would've kicked off on its own without the 2011 Green Lantern movie but film producers and filmmakers...you name those people. they were like: "let's do what we gotta do." and in the end, it was a mistake for all Green Lantern fans. Am I missing something or there is more to the premature cancellation than meets the eye?
Adding a bit of hope and insult to injury in Justice League action, an episode about Hal getting stuck in some space gas station has an AI voiced by Grey again, who at the end says she has no memory of who she is but has hope to find out and flies into the darkness like a familiar red lantern. This show makes me understand what fans of firefly felt like.
@Will N this is the main reason I prefer streaming services to traditional cable. TV always had a problem equating a shows success/quality purely to toy sales, air times, and etc (and worse has made shows compete). Streaming/subscription services allow a little more room for freedom. Also you brought back some trauma with how much Marvel canceled their best shows. I really don't care about either's movies (I don't get why everyone gravitate to live action movies nowadays), and regardless neither put out movies better than their peak animated content.
I love how Guy Gardner is loved by everyone in this shows universe when in literally every continuity ever including the main DC Rebirth everyone hates him( and I mean every continuity and animated show except this one)
Glade to know that the writers of the show decide to pull a 180 and make a character from a complete asshole. To a cocky but still good-intention person. Makes the series as a whole different from what you expect.
Guy Gardner is that kid who was surprised when people thought he was cute so as soon as he tried to capitalize on that persona he stopped being cute. That was his planned arc for season 2.
So glad they brought back razor in the resent young justice phantoms episode Seeing razor again not only was a gift to the fans of GL-TAS but all but confirms that young justice and GL-TAS share the same canon universe and with that they could bring back more than just razor
Considering GLTAS made me cry my fucking eyes out with the best and most heartbreaking romantic relationship I've ever gotten the chance to see, I would be a little bit personally offended if they didn't bring Aya and Razer back PERMENANTLY into the YJ storyline in a few years.
It is not necessarily. Take it as an adaptation. It is not part of the same universe. It is not exactly a continuation but similar things happened there. Look there are characters that are original to Bruce Timm's league animated series, which were later adapted into comics and other series. This is the same
I LOVED this show. I still remember being at my grandmother's house and waking up early in the morning, running down the stairs, and watching as many episodes as I could that came on.
Fun fact about this and YJ: Young Justice Season 4 episode 19 had Razor, same voice actor from this, same with kilowog, and ended up having the story from the end of GLTAS and brought it into that YJ episode
Although it should be noted that they are still different universes. They just added a story from one to the other. This doesn't make everything in the gl series cannon in young justice
@Jonathan Schmechel exactly, there's alot that prevents them from being canon to each other. It's no more canon than it is to Smallville because of that one comic Aya was in.
@@jonathanschmechel7452 yes, I never said it made them connected. While it can be in later years I was just saying it because it picks up from the story that we’ve seen in GLTAS obviously something similar happened in that universe. But I like to think that the writers knew what they were doing when they gave that to us lol
I think both of them would be really cool 😁 that was a cute reference in the Steam Lantern episode. They could've maybe even showed the Guardians inspiration inspiration creating their own lanterns because of a dimension hopping Alan Scott.
Razor and Aya are still looking for each other across all of DC's continuities, and nothing could make me happier. The two of them and Saint Walker where my favourite part of the show.
I love this show so much. I loved how they developed Aya’s character from a naive AI to an being made from the entity Ion. I really wish that the show had continued.
This show singlehandedly shaped my childhood and made me a Green Lantern fan. The comics it takes inspiration from are literal masterpieces. I was so immersed and inspired by the lore, worldbuilding, story and characters....I can't even believe to quantify the amount of influence this show had on me. This was MY Bruce Timm show, not Superman, not Batman, not Justice League, THIS and i'm proud of where i landed.
@@BovineDesigns i started with that whole saga but then i realized that Before rebirth there was the whole Emerald Twilight/New Dawn/Zero Hour era which ties into Rebirth so i read that aswell. Plus, that saga wasn't rebooted with the New 52 so i kept on reading until the end of the Johns era. Also read New Guardians cause i love Kyle and i love seeing the corps interact. I read the end of the N52 era when they introduced Jessica and fell in love with her aswell, then picked it back up when Rebirth came, in both HJATGLC and Green Lanterns and stopped at the end of the Rafa Sandoval era. Next i wanna pick up GL Earth One cause it looks really interesting and people can't praise that enough. Green Lantern is unique in the sense that its lore hasn't suffered a major reboot since Crisis back in the 80s so there is A LOT to read.
@@BovineDesigns They also changed the red lantern oath so it isn't so gory. The comic version was "From blood and rage of crimson red, ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, together with our hellish hate we'll burn you all that is your fate." While the series was " From blood and rage of crimson red, we fill men's souls with darkest dread and twist your minds with pain and hate, we'll burn you all that is your fate."
This show has so much potential. It reminds me of the animation from The Incredibles but on a understandably smaller budget. What's crazy was they introduce The Book of the Black in Scar's office scene. They could've potentially set up Blackest Night!
Yup! That's actually a really good art comparison! Even then the quality of the rendering is stunning for a TV budget. I wish we could've seen Blackest Night that would've been incredible.
This show and Spectacular Spider-Man are two great shows that ended prematurely. Ironically, both of them starred Josh Keaton who gave it his all in both performances. Hopefully we can see more someday. Great video.
Fun fact: did you know that, besides looser censorship, they were able to kill so many characters because they needed fodder for the planned Black Lantern arc and Volpe told the executives they were going to bring them back?
@@BovineDesigns It took me so long to finally notice this reply lol. There's an interview with the Blog of Oa with Jim Krieg and Giancarlo Volpe (both in podcast and article form) that confirms the plan, but it supposedly wasn't due to avoiding censorship, but because they could reuse a lot of the models from throughout the series for a Black Lantern army.
OMG! I recently found this show and I love it so much! I need more Razer and Aya!! The way I describe it is Romeo and Juliet in space with lots of action, adventure, humor, heart and existential questions... Lots of surprises in the mix too! Loved your video!
It’s honestly sad that I didn’t give this show the time of day when it was airing. Looking back on it I probably would like it. If my opinion on Young Justice is anything to base my opinion on.
I think you would be happy to hear that Razer finally made an appearance outside the show in the recent episode of Young Justice Outsiders. It's basically what the writers thought how the cliff hanger would resolve itself, I thought it was a pretty good watch.
I remember I grew up watching this with my family. It was a great show! Probably why I love Green lanterns actually, cool space cops that make up their weapons!
Well my friend, you will be happy to know they have continued the story (albeit in more of a cameo way) in one of the Young Justice show, specifically in Season 4 Episode 19, and boy oh boy was it worth the wait! Have fun looking into that!
First, Kilowog’s voice actor also voiced, in my opinion, the best version of Bulkhead in Transformers Prime. Second, the only lantern corps not seen in this show were the Indigo Lanterns of compassion, which were created by Hal’s predecessor, Abin Sur, as sort of a contingency plan for in case the Guardians of the Universe become evil after the Blackest Night event and to reform even the worst criminals in existence
Something very interesting is that, according to the Wikipedia page, Aya actually appears in Justice League Action, and even alluded to knowing Hal Jordan. While it’s just a reference to the show, I like to think they’re the same universe. Helps that Josh Keaton plays Hal in both shows. There was also a concept sketch made of a Blue Lantern Razer, with dialogue implying he found Aya.
Babel is my absolute favorite episode. The humor is on point, the character interactions are wonderful, and you get to see just how much these characters have grown as a team.
I agree! It crazy how many people's favorite it is considering how little superpowers are on display. It really shows that the characters and their relation to one another really sold the show.
@@BovineDesigns I’ve been watching more of your stuff, and I can definitely say that I’m a subscribed fan now. Looking forward to that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes review.
I love how the Orange Lantern core only had one lantern representing his greed in which he wanted it for himself which perfectly justifies the Orange core using greed power.
I'm waiting for this to get revived on HBO Max like Young Justice (or new series similar in quality to YJ, this, and DCAU (like a Red Hood and the outlaws series, Flash Mythos series, Rebirth Titans, or supersons)).
Maybe they could make a spin off movie that follows razor trying to get his robo waifu back and that can show us how our favourite characters have been doing in the past few years since we saw them and hal will show up but he'll just be an cameo to part some wisdom on razor and razor is the main character duh and he'll explore a hole the hole galaxy for his love visit never before seen lands and meet new characters like John Stewart and some rough red lanterns and maybe will get a new power up wink wink and the movie would be called razor and the beyond emotions a green lantern the animated series story and it'll be 3d animated and it'll be directed by the original show running cast and yes this sounds impossible to do and would never possible but hey a man could dream and like some people say never say never
I love how he talks about razor or iya as only ever appearing in this show, but then young justice goes and connects the DC universe even more than it already has
17:21 It's so sad that Green Lantern: TAS never had season 2 and season 3, I mean this show was a masterpiece for Cartoon Network, Why don't they understand true action, true adventure, and true art anymore?
This show had a loosely based comic published close to the time that young justice came out. It was basically a bunch of one shot stories following the characters with no real relation to the shows timeline but had similar-ish stories. 9/10 for the show, 6/10 for the comic.
This video made me want to watch the show. For some time now I've been wondering if I should give it a try, but man, it seemed like they accomplished so much... and in only 26 episodes? I'll definitely check it out!
@@BovineDesigns Just finished watching! What a rollercoaster of emotions that was! This is legit one of the best tv shows I've ever seen! (btw there's also an episode of justice league action confirming aya is well :') makes me so happy...)
I thought everyone had forgotten this show, I enjoyed it so much! I loved it how they made both the different cores and even different ring users distinct in their construct style. That and everything else you touched on
I watched this show a few years ago and i was blown away by the quality worldbuilding and emotional depth. I love to see it get some spotlight! I never realized how much famous talent was behind it, but im not surprised.
I was so sad when this got pulled as I really enjoyed the story and from what they were doing, it looked like they were setting up for more Lantern story lines such as the War of Light or Darkness Night. Sure the people up top didn't want Sinestro to be a villain, but the scenes we got did a great job at setting him up to eventually turn yellow, they even introduce the yellow ore which counters green lantern energy. Hearing that they planned to axe the show no matter how well received it was makes me wonder if they only did it because they believed that Disney had cornered the market for animation targeted at people older then 8. I mean, we all saw how the writing of Ben 10 fluctuated from season to season with most of Ben's development being retconned back to a more immature, bratty and self absorbed person because they thought that's what the audience would identify more with. With the cast, it was fun watching how Hal had to act like the surprised father figure to both Razer and Aya as if I had to guess, Hal's in his late 20s, Kilowagg is in his's mid 40s, Razer at best is 19 and Aya acts like a child, a smart child but a child nonetheless.
The yellow crystals were a great set up for potential yellow lanterns. Heck that was episode 3 or 4 as I recall. It's entirely possible, although Disney was doing the same thing with their shows, they cancelled the last of their good Marvel shows around the same time CN did.
I absolutely love this series, I finished seeing it for the first time this week (9 years late lmao) and its is one of the best animated shows ever created, it definitely needs a renewal. I think I heard that they were in talks for it back in January of this year, hopefully it gets to something. Edit: Btw, I just subbed, great content. :D
So happy you loved the show! I'm glad more people are discovering it, the first time watch through is special. I heard about that too, personally I'd prefer that over the live action series that sounds like a mess. And thank you so much dude! I'm happy you enjoy it 😁
This show is the definition of UNDERRATED, such a fantastic series, and just in a single season, manage what some current shows are incapable of doing despite lasting more than 5, 6 or even 8 seasons (or how many season that show that should never be mention have), I loved this show, as a long DC fan, and despite Green Lantern was always one of my favorites, was this show that make me wanted to read at that time current GL stories, its sad this show only lasted 1 season and kinda of amazing tackle so many stories and characters so damn well in the spam of just 26 episodes, also a pity both Aya and Razor never got translated to the main DC comics, those 2 characters where amazing new additions at the level of characters like Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya, The Phantasm and so many Bruce Timm and Paul Dini creations. I wish it got season 2, actually now knowing how BAD, Young Justice revival ended been......maybe this was for the better............I have lost the interest on modern DC and Marvel adaptations both in TV and Comics....with the exception of Harley Quinn TAS and DC Super Hero girls, and Peacemaker (and The Suicide Squad) DC have not done much to capture my attention, and the news of new stuff they want to do now just focusing more in Diversity than actual good story telling, just make me less interested in reading comics, kinda sad.
Yeah I'm kind of in the same boat with both of the Big Two right now. I've come to the realization that I already got alot of good out of the companies but they no longer consider their fans to be their target audience.
I hope they bring this series back somehow, it was really good and way closer to the comic than the movie. I think the movie failed because it didn't really show what the GL are all about. They are a intergalactic police force. The movie focused too much on earth. In addition to fighting parallax they should have shown Hal going around to different planets fighting enemies and savings aliens all while discovering and honing his powers.
You absolutely nailed it my friend 😁 Emerald Knights does this to an extent but Hal's character is basically nonexistent except as a plot device to defeat Sinestro. Tales of the Corps is my favorite as it shows the corps responsibilities and experiences.
@@BovineDesigns yea I really liked Emerald Knights and how they explained some of the backstory. I also liked how sinestro was friends with Hal. Just like in the animated show. First flight was good but just like the live action movie they moved way too fast. It makes for a better story when you show them as good friends at first then bitter enemies down the line. Sinestro has a huge backstory and is not just some ass hole Hal has to defeat. His is one of the most cunning ring wielders out there.
@@BovineDesigns it gave us what it look like in the universe of Green Lantern and how emotions can be manifested or used to decide what is right and wrong, how you prove that a common rumour or stereotype is not always the case of the race or in this case, the lantern corp, not always blind instincts. Not to mention that everyone can be different and change if given enough time, even for a robot
It seems like they where building up to it (in don't know if bovine mentioned it but in the episode "scarred" while they are in the guardian chamber there is a book eith the black lantern logo on it)
@mystery account I did not mention it, but yes I bet 100% that they were building up to Blackest Night. Heck they were building up to the Sinestro Corps from episode 2 with the yellow crystals.
Don't know if anyone else caught it, bit the animators little characters coat is (and I'm just guessing here) "The Butcher" aka the spirit emotional animal for the red lanterns.
I loved this series, I would watch each episode of this and young justice as they premiered with my entire family. We enjoyed their take on green lantern, and while we would have loved to see more, the cliffhanger of the end was fine for me. It says that their stories aren't over and they have hope, so more of a bitter/sweet ending for me. Now i feel like rewatching the series
Yeah it wasn't the worst ending in the series. It at least wrapped up the most immediate plot threads. I would highly recommend another watch, I rewatched it 3 times for this video and I still wasn't tired of it.
I remember seeing this show on Toonami and loved it, but Toonami disappeared before I could finish the show. I completely forgot about the show until I remembered the show one time and I was completely sad knowing it had been canceled.
That's a s shame, one of the other commenters said the same thing! They really should've aired the whole show! I would highly recommend checking out the whole thing!
you’ve earned my sub. LIKE my guy you went in depth about everything about this show, not many people are able to do that. And then the flash music at 8:39 was just the cherry on the cake 😎 keep up the work bro 😎
Green Lantern: TAS is sooo fucking underrated. It really needs a lot more love. If Young Justice got the continuation it deserved, I’m sure WB and DC would be willing to continue BTB and GL:TAS if we showed enough support for them.
I always really liked this show. Would have loved to see more seasons from it. Razor in particular is a very interesting character that I would have enjoyed seeing in DC comics and other shows, kind of like what happened with characters from TAS continuity.
@@BovineDesigns Agreed. It's strange that DC didn't try to make some of these original characters live on in the comics. Razor and Aya would have made fantastic additions to the GL series. Imagine playing Injustice 3 or whatever and Razor was on the roster? ^^
If you want to consider canonicity, Aya makes a reappearance in Justice League Action as a wandering A.I. with no memory of her past. This means JLA takes place a while after this series. Quick, someone tell Razer.
I know I'm late, but you'll be happy to know that Razor has appeared outside of this show very recently. He has appeared in some of the newest episodes of Young Justice
I remember I was Angry as a child when they canceled this show and plenty of other shows like it. The fact that the executives thought long form storytelling was not what kids wanted is insane. I think these DC TV shows came out at the wrong time just like many other Kid's cartoons. I know Young Justice was brought back for 2 more seasons and I'm grateful for that. I still hope Green Lantern the Animated series comes back in some way. Who knows depending on how well Batman the Caped Crusader does maybe Warner Bros/HBO or whoever makes the decision can make more of these shows or renew the ones that fans fell in love with like Young Justice.
@@BovineDesigns i hope so as well. Personally I'm tired of not seeing the Batfamily in modern media especially in movies. Same with Superman's protégés like Supergirl and Krypto. I just want more long running animated series of other DC characters that aren't Batman and Superman.
This is by far my favourite iteration of Green Lantern, such a shame it got cancelled. I wonder if we'll ever see it done as much justice as this again.
They do, that's actually a cut section of my script where i was going to talk about them but i decided i didn't have enough experience with 3d effects to say anything substantial.
In Green Lantern: TAS, We see Hal Jorden, Guy Gardner, Aya, Kilowog, Razor, and many others in TAS What is characters are missing is John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Alan Scott the Sentinel, Katma Tui, Arisia Arab, Sinestro as a Yellow lantern of fear, Lyssa Drak, Malice, Apex, Salzar, Dex-Star Karu-Sil, Constance, Penance, Laira Omoto, Indigo 1, Rankorr and 6-2
Green lantern the animated series is hands down one of my favorite animated shows. I watched it at just the right time and owe it completely for hooking me on the comics and further green lantern mythos. Truly a fantastic show, would love to see it come back one day.
That's wonderful! It's a perfect intro to GL, the comics can be hard to get into bu themselves. I would highly recommend a rewatch, it's as good as you remember!
IA shows up in justice league action. Also they where setting up a story arc for her appearantly. The show is surpriseingly good but that's still pretty surprising. Also holly hell your bias to the point it's sick.
@@BovineDesigns yeah good shows or shows with potential keep getting cancelled when they have a lot to say. We should have at least got a big special or movie.
@@BovineDesigns yeah. Also to be fair the CW shows aren't really that bad(they didn't do the anti-monitor to well though.). But yeah JLA is underrated. Also cabby is a good character but not really used well in some episodes.
@@lunakingsley.7247 I loved that JLA highlighted lesser known characters like him! I really didn't even know he was a thing, but he's such a fun idea for a character.
Rewatched this show recently. The "love is the answer" type of plot dosent make me as happy as it does other people, and that's fine. It's easily made up for with watching Saint walker be a bouncy little trickster. Do wish they would let Hal be wrong on occasion. Like, they kind of let him be a jerk and put people in danger because everyone knows he have plot armor. I would have loved to see more of it, letting them move into other storylines.
I do agree in terms of Hal, Kilowog does confront him about this saying his gung-ho attitude and luck will only get him so far. I think they could've used this to show Hal becoming too prideful and underestimating Mongul who goes on to destroy Coast City.
Yeah I remember watching this as it was coming out and it was so captivating. It does a stellar job at expanding the DC universe beyond the horizons of earth to the darkest corners of the cosmos
3:11 - mercy that scene still gets me, done entirely without dialogue but still absolutely perfectly expressing exactly what it needs to. Cracks me up every time.
