My teacher did this to us at school with what exactly I can't remember but maybe paper mache or similar. Everyone did it. We were supposed to cover everything except nostrils and do it in pairs on one of us at a time. My partner/friend did not listen to the teacher and put it on thick AND on my hairline. I think it was on there for at least two hours plus. I remember finally getting to see after my teacher went around my face gently with Vaseline or something. Coming out with all of the little kids looking down at me looking concerned and me being calm as could be when I was like 8. Cut to my other friend who was in hers for like 15 minutes or half an hour when her partner did everything right and she was rocking in the corner of the bathroom hyperventilating because she was claustrophobic. I don't think they repeated it after that

That's why I like the show ER and House MD. Chicago med and good doctor is a good show too but they have a bit too much drama in it. But it's a TV show for a reason. So by far, House MD and ER was the best medical tv shows out there.

Okay so, hypothetically, how should an EMT handle this situation? A lot of people have mentioned that she would probably already be dead by the time they got there but let's say they were already in the neighborhood. Like our dear first responder here says, they should just pull the mask off, her eyebrows be damned. What about the wax in her airway though?

Probably just pull the wax off around her mouth and nose then decide if you should risk pulling it off the eyes or let the hospital do that Then put her on oxygen and do what you can to keep her calm while explaining what's happening on the truck

No no, that's a good one. Also, the wax doesnt cool down THIS fast. For a large amount of wax like it, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes, thinner applications take less time. She'd have time to scrape it off in a liquid form but she maybe burned a bit.

One season they had like a San Andreas earthquake hit LA with poor cgi, the latest one there was a cruise ship that was either sinking or going to crash into the city. Every episode is some life altering shit that they just play off as nothing. It’s like a cartoon world where the Earth could split open, swallowing LA as a whole but to them it’s just another day.
Right? If she really couldn't breathe, she'd be dead long before this clip could be captured. I don't know what show this is, but ER and others have been dinged by medical professionals for being seriously unrealistic. Maybe they should just film a real ER in a major city for 6 hours overnight on a holiday weekend. Nobody would ever go into medicine again.

I had a blocked airway in hospital once. You c a n n o t hold still. You will want to breathe. When it started it took maybe 30 seconds until I started flailing and the bio sign monitor started beeping - if I'm generous. And the male nurse holding my hand (that d i d work for a few moments) saying "stay still something something" (don't remember what else he said) made me angry. I thought "I'm fucking suffocating here, I can't stay still!" My last memory before passing out was the pulse changing between 150 and 40 and the O2 dropping. It was dried mucus that blocked the tube in my lungs. I almost died from a booger.

Luckily it was in ICU, so the doctor on duty was basically two rooms away. He was talking to my mom, said "he's suffocating" and hung up. This was the 2nd week of COVID lockdowns, so my poor mother was 100 miles away at home and just heard that. 3½ years earlier my dad died suddenly but not unexpected, half a year later I almost died of heart infarct (double bypass and stents), then 2½ years later Fournier's gangrene which resulted in my booger-related near-death.

To be fair, I watched this episode and she was laying on the table waiting to get a wax when someone else accidently knocked the wax melter over into her face then for whatever reason they called an ambulance but didn't try to help her get the wax off

I just…even in panic I would have figured out I need to pull that stuff out my nose holes before it hardens. It’s not that hard to think about your airway once it’s cut off. Why didn’t she smear it off too before hardening since it’s not completely instant and takes a good minute

I saw this episode and i think you edited out the part of pulling the wax off. In the episode the spa employee told the that it was a certain temperature that left on can burn and possibly melt some skin. I understand the caution of not pulling it off. Also for her not pulling it off, when you are panicking you do not think. I do love the show and sometimes they do things weird but, every now and then they get things correct
I have never had burning wax on my face. However, I feel pretty confident that I would try to remove the wax BEFORE it burned my skin enough to melt it. Have you ever touched something that is hot before?

I'm not a medical professional, but I'm pretty sure breathing trumps skin burns. If I have extremely hot wax covering my airways and somehow my brain doesn't allow basic instincts to allow me to immediately begin to peel the wax off my face, I'd be okay with anyone nearby ripping it off for me. Even if it's going to take flesh with it. The alternative is that the wax stays in place longer and maybe doesn't damage other areas as I quickly die from not breathing. Also, how could wax be so hot that it would flow easily into all of my airways but also cool enough to harden instantly to the point of suffocating me in a thick covering?

Considering how the nose and mouth are connected to the same hole/airway. Also that they said the wax is "in" her airway. Cutting holes for nostrils would be useless.
@@nicholasdean3467 They said the wax was in her throat, so they need an oral airway. If the wax is in her mouth, an oral airway will push the wax further in. You can have something in your mouth and still breathe through your nose. If the wax has already gone past her epiglottis, she'd have been dead long, long before this. Anyway, she can clearly breathe at least a little as she's making noises, so she still has at least a partially patent airway.
I can't remember which show it was, but a writer/producer had a situation just like that with a professional advisor on set, and the director fired him because he was "limiting his creative process."
That's what consultants are for, but unfortunately in real life, consultation fees for movies and other media only exist to be nepotism payouts to people the producers know, or worse, to firms the producers own.

They should have an entire canon episode where Jason is there solving problems the right way and the main cast is getting mad at him for doing his job. OR! Or, even better, having him there as a transfer from another department, giving proper solutions to problems from the sidelines, only to be promptly ignored/dismissed by the other actors.
I like how she's panicking and flailing her arms around but not trying to get the wax off her face, which would be anybody's first instinct. People choking to death will scratch their faces raw to get to something that's inside their throat. But this lady won't even try to get this off her face. That's just great writing!
