Algae growth is the secret to a Sea-Monkey tank's success. In this video I give my 4 best tips for promoting the growth of phytoplankton and give a tutorial on how to do it. I use an Ocean Volcano brine shrimp tank and also talk about why culturing microalgae to feed them separately is beneficial.

Got confused for a minute as I'd not noticed the name change, I really need to start an Algae colony as I'm struggling to get a good seed of Algae in the tanks as I've had to use a lower UV light due to risk of damage so the little blighters polish it off as quick as it grows even with increased feeds.
@pico-cosmos

Ah yeah I changed the name a little over a week ago, I figured this suits the channel as a whole a little better :) haha yeah I’ve noticed the same thing too.. if you have a lot of adults they usually eat the algae faster than it grows. Culturing live algae is definitely the way to go 👍

@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Год назад
Are you using distilled water? In my experience using an airline in the tank makes a huge difference in those first few weeks. One of the greatest enemies for Sea-Monkeys is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a gas which all animals naturally produce but is more important to underwater animals than to land animals. In water, some of the carbon dioxide forms a compound called carbonic acid. This is a very weak acid but it is strong enough to kill Brine Shrimp. If there is too much carbonic acid present in your tank, Sea-Monkeys cannot make use of the oxygen that is available to them. As a result, they suffocate. So for the best results (and as a precautionary measure), put an airline into the tank as soon as the first babies hatch

It’s a good question - I assume they become airborne and are carried by wind

I think I got a bad batch of sea monkeys because they aren't hatching and I followed your tips. The temperature is good, aeration is good, lighting is good I'm not sure what to do now should I keep waiting?

Do you know the kind of algae that grows in their little tanks naturally? I have decided to start a algae food source before another attempt at a sea monkey tank. Having this food source ready may give the new tank a better chance. However, I need a culture. You can get some online. I thought it was spirulina, but it doesn’t look at all like what yours looks like. I thought of just making the salt water mixture and throwing in the algae growth food and just…waiting.
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Год назад
The algae species that grows in the tanks will differ a little for everyone. I’m not sure what species mine is, but my guess is that it’s most likely Nannochloropsis Oculata. Nanno is a great algae as it’s VERY small and easy for the babies & adults to eat. Dunaliella Salina is a great option too

I have a question, I live in Florida so it stays warm all year round (and when it does get cold I have a heating mat for the sea monkeys) a few years ago I had 2 sea monkey colonies which were going well for around a year intill sadly I went on vacation and my family over fed them, but ever since then I always have a hard time getting sea monkeys past the 3-4 day mark?
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Год назад
Could be that you’re overfeeding them too early. It’s also possible that there’s not enough oxygen in the tank - are you using an airline?
@johnxporter

@@pico-cosmos yes I currently am using an airline but my original 2 colonies never used are pipes
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Год назад
Hmm that’s odd :/ any chance the tanks are getting too hot? I’d try reducing the amount of food you give them on the first few feedings - they need barely anything those first couple weeks

I have a question. How do sea monkey eggs last so long in a little packet? Is there some sort of expiration date or is there some twist they do to keep the eggs in perfect shape?
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Год назад
It’s an evolutionary adaptation. If the conditions are really good they can survive in their eggs for over 100 years
