Clearwater Marine Aquarium successfully released Austin, a juvenile green sea turtle, this week in partnership with US Customs and Border Protection. Austin was found floating in Hillsborough County with healed deformities to both rear flippers and carapace from unknown trauma. Austin’s first swim test revealed significant buoyancy issues including being vertical when resting and having trouble staying submerged underwater. To further assess these issues, Austin underwent a deep dive trial with the help of Florida Aquarium, where behavior in deeper water was assessed over a three-week period. The swim test showed Austin was able to successfully rest and forage on the bottom and stay submerged. We are grateful that this resilient turtle was able to be released back to the wild!
