Easy to achieve and beautiful results. I'd just come across another method from a dollhouse maker. They used colored card stock, so the paper would be your dominant base color, and oil pastels on top of that for smudgy color variation. Similar results from the look of it. So I guess there's your dry alternative to it. You can find card stock that is slightly bumpy in texture as well.
