About a decade ago, I walked into a boba shop and saw something surprising on the menu: "green" Thai tea. With Thai tea normally being orange, I was really curious and decided to give it a try. When I took my first sip, I was amazed. It tasted bright and fresh, different from any other Thai tea I'd had before. It had this unique flavor profile with notes that I couldn't quite pinpoint. After talking with the barista who made my drink, I found out that unlike traditional Thai tea that uses black tea brewed with star anise, tamarind, and cardamom, green Thai tea is actually brewed using jasmine green tea, infused with pandan, vanilla, and mint. Quite a stark difference! Since then, I've seen green Thai tea in a few other boba shops, though it's still a rare find compared to it's orange counterpart. Most people that I talk to have never tried it. So in this video, I want to show the main differences between the two and also share with you my favorite way to make green Thai tea!
► Ingredients for the green Thai tea concentrate (4-5 servings):
- 1/2 cup (55 g) green Thai tea mix (amzn.to/3R1TA3Y)
- 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar (amzn.to/3UYanpu)
- 3 cups (710 ml) hot water at 160-180F/71-82C
- 2 cups (500 g) ice
► Directions for the green Thai tea concentrate:
1. Combine green Thai tea mix, sugar, and hot water in a large bowl and steep for 6-8 minutes.
2. Add ice into a pitcher (where you plan on storing the concentrate).
3. Strain the tea through a cloth filter into the iced pitcher and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
► Ingredients for assembling the green Thai tea drink:
- 1 cup (240 ml) green Thai tea concentrate
- 1 cup (250 g) ice
- 2 oz (60 g) high quality milk (my favorite: amzn.to/3UYanpu)
- 1 oz (30 g) condensed milk (amzn.to/3UYanpu)
► Directions for assembling the green Thai tea drink:
1. Add condensed milk into a cup (or shaker: amzn.to/3UYanpu).
2. Add ice into the same cup.
3. Add Thai tea concentrate.
4. Add milk.
5. Stir (or shake if using a shaker) and enjoy!
