Some facts about Greenbugs:
The greenbug have a body-size of about 2 mm.
They are a favourite dish for most Ladybirds.
A ladybird can eat 50 aphids a day and around 5000 for a lifetime.
The female reproduces herself asexually, giving birth to fully developed mini-clones of herself which in turn will reach reproductive age in a weeks time. (except in the autumn when they are laying eggs for the next season).
Each female produces between 50 and 60 young per generation, and there are about 20 generations annually. They can give birth up to five times a day!
That means one female, in theory, can produce millions of offspring in a season!
When the plant they are feeding on are getting to overcrowded they produce offspring with wings - to invade new fresh plants... They can migrate great distances, by riding on winds. It is believed to have spread from New Zealand to Tasmania in this way.
Some species of ants use aphids as cattle and milk them on their sweet "honey dew" which they generously share in exchange for protection. The ants also move them around to new, fresh pastures.
Aphids are often infected by bacteria, viruses, and fungi that they spread between plants.
They have, fortunately, many enemies to keep their population down.
