Greenhouse Paraffin Heater Unboxing & Set Up - How To Heat Greenhouse In Winter
It's starting to get really cold now, so today on Grow It I'm unboxing and setting up an Apollo Paraffin Greenhouse Heater that I recently picked up from B&Q.
Especially useful if you need to heat a greenhouse without electricity or a shed without electricity and you need to keep a greenhouse warm over winter.
This video is not sponsored by the featured brands or products and I provide an honest opinion on product quality and effectiveness.
This is also a really good way to stop plants from freezing and to stop frost killing plants, or for keeping garden plants warm over winter.

Great advice on paraffin heaters as I'm looking around for the best heater for my greenhouse as this is my first winter with plants in it.

I’m not sure if I have it in winter update videos but I always make a long tent/tunnel out of bubble wrap with the plants and heater inside. It just makes it more efficient heating a smaller space.

You could use carbon fibre fabric as a replacement never ending wick.

Did you check with a thermostat, how much the max heat it reach? Also does it continue to burn the whole night without raising the ribbon.

I just knit sweaters for mine 😂😂😂 just kidding of course. I have never grown in winter but this year I tried brassicas so fingers crossed they are in greenhouse (poly tunnel) and seem ok. Hope you and your family and friends have a safe and excellent New Year 🇨🇦🎉🥳🥳🎉🍸🥃🍹🍺

Hello, I haven’t had to trim the wick on mine, it usually just burns away slowly like on a candle.

Hey, glad I found your channel will be watching more later. I just got a 6x4 greenhouse. About how much did it raise the temp by? Am hoping to start all my seeds in the greenhouse instead of in the house this year. Thanks, simon
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 2 года назад
Hi Simon, I’m glad you’re enjoying it! It wasn’t really big enough to heat the whole greenhouse but this is the second year I’ve used it and it’s been fine. I usually put a layer or 2 of bubble wrap over the seed trays like a blanket then put the heater on the floor underneath. The heat rises and gets trapped underneath the wrap. Hope this helps!

i done is exactly what you done in this video, but the fire is only lit on for 1-2 minutes than gone. why?

Could you use this in your bathroom? Would it be safe and give of much heat?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt Год назад
It wouldn’t be very good for heating a room unfortunately. It’s good for keeping a small space above freezing but it’s still quite cold. The main issue would be ventilation, paraffin isn’t a very clean burning fuel and would be a high risk for causing carbon monoxide poisoning!

Hi, thanks for the video. I bought the same one last year but never used it because trust issues got the best of me and didn’t want to loose my tomatoes! I ended up leaving them inside but plan on using it this spring. How have you been getting on with it so far?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 3 года назад
It's been ok so far, I only really use it for stuff that could be OK but just want the couple of extra degrees just incase. I think it would be ok in a small space with vulnerable plants but I dont know if I'd trust it in the full greenhouse. It could be ok for a later frost just as a safety net where it's only for a few hours, but longer cold periods over winter I'm not as confident.

Hello from America Missouri. Will it affect light sensitive plants as far as the lighting schedule 12-12 ect
@GrowIt
@GrowIt Год назад
No there’s just a small viewing hole on either side at the base, it only lets out a small amount of light from the flame. It wouldn’t be strong enough to cause problems with lighting schedules.

I’ve got one of these and I am struggling with it. How do you set it to stay on overnight ?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 2 года назад
It’s a case of using the spinny wick adjusters once it’s lit to shorten the wick until the flame is as small as possible without going out or flickering. Check that the air flow lever is fully open too. Once it’s lit it should stay lit on a small flame for upto a week if needed.
@kjerbusaig

can I leave it overnight burning? How does it work?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt Год назад
They’ll burn until it runs out of fuel, as long as it’s in a safe place it can be left.
@anio6865

How many hours will it burn for ? And how much paraffin do you put in the container ?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 2 года назад
Hi I think it was around 2.5 litres fit in the tank, but the 5 litre bottle lasted me most of winter as we didn't get a lot of frosts. I think a full tank would last around a week if you didn't put it out, but it only needs to be on overnight, once the sun is out it warms up anyway.

Hi looks good what is the wee leaver at the other side for? And how long does the oil last? I have a twin oil heater was wondering if I could only light one side instead of the both of them going at once? Happy Growing 🥀🌺🌻🌼
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 3 года назад
Hi thanks for watching, the leaver raises a small mechanism inside that closes on the wicks to put them out, but it doesn't work all the time so I usually double check that it's definitely gone out. Yes you can use one wick or both, on Monday morning one of my wicks had gone out overnight and it was fine! A full tank on mine will last 7 days (or 14 nights) which was around 3-4 litres of parrafin.

Hi I have just bought this exactly the same heater, is there an easy way to knock the heating off as there was no instructions
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 3 года назад
Hi Karen, the easiest way that I found was to use the wick control dial to reduce the length until it goes out, or if it still doesn't go out use the oxygen flow lever to put it out. Can't remember if it's by pushing it down or up but one way works!

Hi, many thanks for the video, just setting this up now. Is there any issue with fumes, carbon monoxide etc if you are entering the greenhouse after a week of the heater running?
@mathewgreen9663

I would ventilate the greenhouse before going inside.
@kamkaur1980
@kamkaur1980 2 года назад
Would I be able to use this in a plastic greenhouse?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 2 года назад
It shouldn’t be a problem if the greenhouse is big enough. It doesn’t get hot enough to melt anything as long as it isn’t touching the plastic or too close. It can be used with one wick if it’s too much heat for the size of the greenhouse. Just be sure to include ventilation for the gas to escape, if it’s a walk in greenhouse especially. Plastic greenhouses can trap in carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Anyone tried putting kerosene in these?
@777MrJoe
@777MrJoe Год назад
Kerosene will produce a lot of black smoke, it will fill the greenhouse in no time with it.
@GrowIt
@GrowIt Год назад
That’s right as @777MrJoe said, kerosene isn’t as clean burning as paraffin which makes it less suitable for indoor burning.
