We added 10 Coturnix quail to my green house about 30 days ago. They were about 3 weeks old when I bought them so they should start laying eggs soon.

Don’t collect eggs that Are from the beginning of the season. I raise quail and have for years now. If you see them starting to lay, just eat the eggs for like 2-3 weeks. Then you can start incubating the eggs you get after that. They usually need a bit of time to develop and once they get going, you can hatch out as many as you can.

Is your greenhouse humid in winter? Does humidity bother the quail in your opinion.

Yes, there is almost always moisture of the the plastic walls and it does not seem to bother the quail. Thanks for watching.

Any updates on the quail in the greenhouse? Thinking about raising a handful in our 11 x 18 greenhouse. Thanks

We finally got our first egg last week. Note if you're going to get chicks, I recommend get them in late winter or early spring. I got mine in the fall so by the time they were ready to lay eggs it was winter. I could provided supplemental light but chose not to. We also learned another lesson the other day, I will fly off if giving the chance to do so. One of my sons was feed them and left the door open and one flew out. No big deal he thought, they are easy to catch, not so much it took off and flew into the forest. We have look for it for two days with no luck. I am sure one of the local Great Grey Owls or raccoons have got it by now. Thanks for watching and stay tune for an update video.

Do you think they’ll eat slugs?
@RavenwoodAcres

Not sure, it would be great if they did because I definitely have a slug problem. Once I start planting here in a few weeks I should be able to tell if the quail eat them.

Nomad-76 Thnx! I hope the slugs get eaten by your quails. I have a problem too. If it works, I’m gonna copy you!

To control slugs put a low dish with beer out for them. They love it and will drown.

If anyone sees this and wants a potentially animal solution.. you can try runner ducks, provide their water away from the plants so they don't risk ocerwaterinf any plants, so they can come and go from it as they please. Plus, runners don't always seem to be big diggers so there's little worry for the plants. They'll eat a range of bugs including slugs and even some snails.

You can put rocks around the base of the plants to protect roots.

don't it get too hot for them in the summer
@RavenwoodAcres

They could, depending on your climate. I live in Washington State and our summers don't get super hot. However, we did live in Nevada for awhile and had Quails there too. They did fine in the 100+ summers there. I think the key would be have circulation fans if you have summer temp over 100 degrees.

@@RavenwoodAcres im in Wa. As well, you should consider doing a greenhouse rabbit colony, super compost, body heat can extend growing season, and everyone should do meat rabbits
