Nice. I did this three years ago with a wine barrel for my front flower beds. We put a plant in the opening on top with goldfish to keep it clean. Works great. You will just love the convenience of this.
If your ground has any moisture whatsoever, you don't need to add water to the concrete. It will pull whatever moisture it needs out of the earth. My father in-law taught me this many years ago. I thought he was full of it, but it works fine.
Thanks, I really like learning stuff like this. Can't wait to see the next video. I have a small building that I want to catch the rain off of. You guys are great. Cathy
So Awesome, I am trying to do the same using the shed in my backyard, as my garden was NOT set up close to my house LOL. No worries though, this is how we learn!
I got my email from bonfire that you reached your T-shirt minimum, I'm so excited I get a "make food your medicine" shirt. Not only am I a Doug and Stacy fan, but this is my mantra to friends and family on how to live health and happy. Thank you for the blessing of your fantastic channel.
You mentioned doing that on the hoop house. I plan on adding gutters to both sides and then having them fill up IBC containers which would be located on the inside of the hoop house. Approximately 3000 sq ft catches a lot of water!! My only issue is that there would be low water pressure so I’m going to have to use a pump. A friend recommended a solar powered pump. Thanks for sharing Doug!
just got our property in texas county, MO. Your site provides great information for those new to the homesteading life. Appreciate your input and nuances as we begin our homestead adventure.
It is nice to see how you homestead has grown. We are just starting but we are hoping it grows steadily as your has. Thanks for all you take time to show.
Just finished refurbishing a chicken coop, which a friend was happy to get rid of and another friend has a rain barrel she wants to get rid of, and am going to get a piece of gutter to do the same thing on a 10th of the scale of what you are doing but the rain barrel will be within 3 ft of the water dish, easier for me and less chemicals for my birds! You and Stacy are both very inspiring even for this city dweller!! Thank you.
I love it i want to do my homestead just like you guys as soon as I get one that is lol Hey Stacy can you please do a day in the life from waking up to going to bed I would love to see what your hole day is like love you guys.
We capture our rain water as well from the pole barn into 2 tanks which are 250 gallons each. Our pole barn is 40 feet long, so the surface is rather large to capture this precious resource. This water is used for the garden primarily. It's amazing to see how fast a tank fills when it's a steady rain. We've seen one filled in about 15 minutes.
I feel you on the post holes. I tried using a gas powered auger and didn't get very far. I had to go back to the trusty manual one. I like the self sufficient green house. I agree, especially where we are in the desert water is precious. I eventually want every one of our structures to collect water. Keep up the great work.
Post Hole Diggin'! Such a fun job! Not that I would know, Patrick is the one that does all that around here, I just help him hold things straight - haha!
I loved the tractor ride! We just traded our 62 Thunderbird for a tractor. We will see you Sunday at Baker Creek Seed Festival and hope we can tell you in person our gratitude we have for all you have taught us. Tonya and Allen from Elizabeth Arkansas
Doug ,dug holes holes.and what big holes Doug, dug! That's quite a big work out you got done. Dang!!! We'll have to start calling you Super Doug...Great video, once again!!! Can't wait for part 2. Thanks for caring & sharing 😁🖤😀
Great idea adding catchment on all buildings, Thank you for showing us how to put the end caps on the gutters. We are going to do the same to our cabin once built and any other building that we will make.
You are the hippest Amish person I know! I enjoy your recommendations concerning farming also . The old time way may be slow but it's steady! Thanks again!😊
Also a good tip if your gutters have trees that can drop debris into them, put house screening over it to let only water get in the gutters and no leaves or pine needles.
Oh man, I have dug so many post holes in the last 4 years, I feel your pain. We rented an auger also but it petered out in our deeply rooted forest terrain. Sometimes good old elbow greese is the only way. Excellent job btw
For future reference, there is an aluminum based caulk which lasts much longer and seals gutters better for longer. Plain silicone and sun don't get along to well.
Love, Love your videos! My daughter and I are about to purchase some land and try too apply your a lot of your ideas, principles, and love☺. She's learning at 17
Depending on soil, I leveled and laid the cinder blocks on their side for better footing and did two parallel stacks four blocks high. In my opinion that would be minimum to get a good flow. On one collector I did a double tote stack that are independent of each other but do connect with a valve. The top one I use for the outdoor kitchen and the bottom for gardening. note if they are not independent then the lower tote has to be totally sealed otherwise the pressure from the top will cause it to drain out the lid or other vents. Hoped that was some help.
Hi Doug & Stacy! Love your videos--looks like you had a flat tire on your lawn mower in the barn...oh well, that's REAL LIFE..we can relate and identify..have an awesome day to you two!!! BTW--thank you for all you do for us out there---it's awesome that good food is a good portion of your ministry----same here...THANKS AGAIN...
that was awesome. I am going to try to do that to feed water down for my stuff too. I may go with smaller containers since there is only one of me and I do have a well already for the house. But the more self reliant a person can be the better. But without a man to do my work my projects have to be smaller. You are both so lucky to have found each other with the same dreams and intelligence.
We have a garden shed we need to catch the rain from. Not room for a real gutter so need to improvise. Good tips here. Is your soil too much clay and that is why the auger didn't work? Noticed the red water pump must have been made in Iowa. 👍👍 Maggie is quite the helper and Greg is a true friend.
I cant wait to see the rest! I have a small shed and 55 gallon barrels to try and catch water for my gardens. That's my next project after the coop expansion.
Just ordered my “Let Food Be Your Medicine” t-shirt!! Gotta wait till all the way at the end of May to get it though!! GEESH! Three whole weeks! I CANT TAKE IT!!! LOL 😆 I’m teasing of course. Suuuuper excited to get it though. Such a cute design. Love it!!! Thanks so much guys. You’re awesome sauce! 😉 Love, hugs and blessings~ Lisa
