Greenock Cut & the Hole of Spango 

A walk in Inverclyde from Inverkip to Greenock following the Greenock Cut, an early 19th century aqueduct that powered mills above Greenock and provided the people of Greenock with drinking water. The walk, mostly within the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, is around 9 miles in total, from Inverkip railway station to Greenock Central railway station. The route passes what is known as the 'Roman Bridge' over the Kip Water, and leaves the road at Shielhill Farm to follow the path, at an elevation of around 160 metres, under Dunrod Hill. Views down to Greenock and Gourock, and across the wide Firth of Clyde towards Dunoon and Kilcreggan, would normally be stunning, but a misty day means we can only catch glimpses of a stunning land and seascape. We pause at the Hole of Spango to wonder where the name 'Spango' originates, and continue by Black Hill and Yellow Hill and the dying remnants of Autumn colours on the misty moor. By Overton, we drop down off the moor into Greenock.
