Back around 1960 I used to take the bus along Metropolitan Ave and then up Manhattan Ave to go to the dentist. When the bus crossed over Newtown Creek I would have to hold my breath so I wouldn't get sick to my stomach. It's improved 1000% since then. Now I walk the nature trail along the creek. Sometimes change can be for the better. Thanks for the tour!
These interviews certainly take the content up a notch. Coming from Liverpool I can relate to this area and the changes it is going through. It's worldwide sadly.
can't wait to visit Greenpoint this weekend. THanks for sharing so much history and culture in the town! really liked how you had some fun convos with the locals!
Been bingeing on your videos found you from action kid. I’m visiting nyc on the 25th to the 29th so I’m here filling my noodle up with all your knowledge.
Hey there! We are Matt and Ann and we just recently came across your channel. Your videos are very nice to watch! They are very interesting and the scenes are really pretty :) Thanks for sharing! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for dealing with the weather to make our evenings a little more interesting I think we all have learned there's more to New York than Times Square. Eric Montalvo
I would like to visit New York City again it’s been over a year. I usually go by myself and stick to the same area I know. I would love it if I had a tour guide do you do these type of tours for people?
Im still in Greenpoint for over 60 yrs. So many changes. As you walked from Greenpoint Ave to Bedford so many memories so many places gone that gave me joy as a younh person. Van Dolans Ice Cream parlor gone replaced by Calexico Cheap Charles Meserole Theater just recently knocked down Lorraines Funture store Fanny Fashions Miles Miles shoes National Shoes Carville's ice cream palor Hershey's mens shop Goodwins Mc Larens Tempkin Carpet Jonhs Bargain store Winski butcher A&P Bohacks Five and Dime Nick and Marys Restaurant Golden Pit Broadway Resturant thank the three Decker is still there but changed hands there is more but I won't bore you. I just will state mostly I miss the people that worked in these places they were king hard working people that wecomed everyone. One more The Rivera Grocery store located Mahattan Ave near Clay. I went to school with Mary and Gladys. We loved our community.
You know you watched some interesting stuff when at the end you wished it would have been longer. Love how you always shine some light on issues like gentrification, robbing neighborhoods of their identity. Great as always! Cheers!
I feel like I should’ve paid for this. It feels like an episode from an educational tv series, the editing and camera work is next level, and I learned so much about my own Borough just now.
What can I say that hasn’t already been said about your videos. So much information, fun facts and figures. Hell we even got sarcasm from Phil 😂😂😂. Anyways.... wait there wasn’t one WTF is going on TD. Only 2 sick plugs but I’ll let you off this time. Brilliant as ever and Greenpoint looks really vibrant and great seeing people back out and about. Looking forward to the next mini movie already 🤞🤞🤞
Greenpoint turned into a predominately Polish community during the late 70s. (the Lech Walesa movement in Poland). Before that Greenpoint was a mixed community of all European backgrounds. The north side of Greenpoint (wooden frame buildings) was a largely a Hispanic community. The Pulaski Bridge replaced the old Greenpoint Bridge (where the trolley ran into Long Island City) that lead into Long Island City on the Queens side. I'm from Long Island City & I used to travel to Greenpoint on personal field trips.
So how do locals feel about very sincere outsiders moving in? The kind of person that would be a good citizen, help fight for what is right in your local area, neighbor...etc. An Ambassador to the community. (Is it easy to get involved even as an outsider?) *Im an artist from Hawaii, living in vermont and I have always wanted to visit NYC, finally went and fell in love.
At an estimated value of $400 billion, Mansa Musa I of Mali is the richest person who ever lived. Born in 1280, Mansa Musa was ruler of the Malian empire, and acquired the most part of his wealth from the production and trade of salt and gold; more than half of the world’s supply at the time in fact. He was a black man He rivals Rockefeller and Gates
Glad this popped up in my feed, lived here for two years and this was very informative. But one thing you didn't mention is that Greenpoint Ave was previously named Lincoln Street with the rest of the alphabet streets and technical the last alphabet street is Quay not oak. Calyer being the one street that broke the rule which should have started with a P.
Great history! Was waiting for you to show GreenPoint Hospital , I was born there 1960 , I heard they moved it to Broadway, but I wanted to see the old location , hope to see sometime when you have another video , I also went swimming at the pool in McCarran park ! Boy you took me to my childhood🥲🙏 it was fun! thanks love Brooklyn my home town City! Hello from Lancaster , Pennsylvania
...Also, in these places of Greenpoint, many Poles also live, with their own cultural and social centers, businesses, shops, Catholic churches and so on, and next door is Williamsburg...
I was baptized in St. Anthony's Church. My first savings account was in the Greenpoint Savings Bank, a glorious interior. I spent my early childhood in McGolrick Park and sat on the Monitor statue's head many times, when a kid could still climb it, prior to the fence. Great video !
Glad I found this, I grew up there from 1980-1994 on Hausman st, loved that donut shop. Was that toy store the old cheap Charlie’s by any chance. My mom ran that for over a decade
McGolrick Park used to be called "Winthrop Park". It was re-named McGolrick Park in 1941 but we always called it Winthrop Park up until the '70's when we moved upstate. Lived on Monitor Street. There was a scene in the last episode of the Showtime show "Ray Donovan that was shot in Greenpoint on Monitor Street near the B-Q-E.
I’ve lived in Greenpoint for about 12 years. One of my favorite places is Transmitter Park (even got engaged there!). Such a fun video. You certainly did the neighborhood justice!!
This was fascinating, thank you. I stayed in Greenpoint opposite St. Anthony of Padua Church in Spring 2018 and loved wandering around this neighbourhood. Had a pizza at Paulie Gee's, Polish food at Christina's and beer at the Brooklyn and Greenpoint breweries, plus great views over to Manhattan from the waterfront. Really interesting insight into the area and its history.
Hello ALL ! Loved the video! and appreciated seeing Greenpoint in action. I'm from out of state. ?Do you feel like a vehicle would be NEEDED to live in Greenpoint, and to get around ( travel to and from Manhattan ) or is there enough options with public transportation and cabs/ uber ? Thanks !
My at one time father in law worked as a young boy as a quilting machine operator for a lady who then owned the business Wich he eventually bought and named Royal quilting a square block factory in Greenpoint on Morgan ave. Owned by him and 2 brothers From the 50's till the 80's it was the 6th largest quilting company in the country.........I think he paid around $100,000 for it , he said he borrowed half the money from a childhood friend who was high up in the Mafia at the time delivered the money in the form of cash in a brown paper bag , He paid his friend back around a year later , no interest nessasary , he sold it to tofu company that was renting it from him for several million dollars in the early 2000's.....for many years and maybe still you could still see the name "Royal Quilting" on the side of building even though it's was painted over, very industrial area scattered with a block of row houses here and there, after the factory closed he and his brothers maintained a small store front with a few desks in another part of Greenpoint for many years after they retired , not really sure what went on there , just a bunch of old Italian and couple of Jewish guys hanging around doing nothing !!! ..........the looks of the area probably hasn't changed much in 75+ years............................Erikl
Actually the Jones act was enforced to exceed colonialism over Puerto Rico we were granted citizenship in 1916 to fight all the American war. We were invaded in 1898. We started coming in the late 40s because of operation bootstraps learn your history
I am moving from the great burning state of California to Brooklyn and you're helping me pick the right burb for me. I am a performing Singer-Songwriter. Any music in Greenpoint? You're fun! Phil is a good sport!
Another great video Tom. So much fascinating history and information. I live in a small town in Scotland and I’m sure that if Tom was airdropped into it he would immediately know EVERYTHING there is to know about it 😂🙃👍
You have an interesting background, how about a video on your film credits? You could take us to the places where you worked, including the comedy clubs. I'd give that a thumbs up.
Possibly your best tour thus far, Tom, although they’re all so terrific that I don’t waste too much brain space on comparing them. Thank you for enlightening us on a SICK amount of history. Many thanks to Phil, too!
