The video footage is mine, featuring trees and plants from Tacoma's Swan Creek park/nature reserve. The song and all rights to it belong to its producer. This has been one of my favorite melodies ever since I first heard it on the beeper speaker of an old 100 Mhz system in the closing scene of King's Quest I years ago.

Issue is, we have no idea of the true original poser. That was lost to time. We only know it hit in 1547 based on another Italian song, which dispels Henry VIII writing it. As that would place it during his daughter Elizabeth I reign. It popped up all over so was a massive hit back then, so it's hard to track the true original source. Many have been put as the original, but who truly knows other than those alive at the time.

Well Henry VIII was supposedly very enamored with poetry and the romanticism of princes and heroes... He was also an entitled douche. Like supposedly he planned to surprise Anne of Cleves by surprising her a day before their first meeting by sneaking into her coach... Which some might find romantic... Except she had no clue what he looked like and he was so gung ho about it that he tried to make a move on her and only managed to terrify and disgust her. Her rejection is supposedly the real reason they never worked, not her picture, but he wanted to safe face after he made a fool of himself and blamed her. So yeah... Definitely a guy who likes the idea of love and romance but is absolute shit at going through with it.

I think this story is Henry the 8th to Queen Anne. After they got married, she couldn't produce a son. She loved him but then she found out he had eyes for Jane, another woman. Her heart broke. Henry eventually framed and accused her of adultery with her musician and had her executed. They said she died with a smile on her face, free from her misery. 😢

It uses both major and minor chords. The song is in minor key which makes it sad, but it has some parts which uses the major chords which make it happy. The tone like the last part where it sounds like it is 'in a wrong tune but it makes the song better', is because it uses melodic minor.

It was none of them, the song was written some time after the death of Henry VIII. It's likely a song about a 'lady of the night'. 'Green' was a colour associated with that at that time in English history

Legend has it that young Prince Henry, soon to become Henry VIIIth of England, either inspired this composition, or actually wrote it himself.

So this might be weird, but one day i heard his in a dream and i thought i just came up with it, so i started whistling it. A few years go by and someone hears me whistle and says "hey, thats greensleeves". I didn't know what they were talking about, and they showed me this video. Very cool to know i've actually been whistling a song i didn't even know

My dad used to sing this to me when I can't sleep he would hold me in his arms and sing this to me until i fall asleep sometimes he would do that for hours, but he changed the lyrics there was my name in there so I've always thought it was his song. It's been years since i Heard this melody , it reminds me of th good time with my dad when he was a good person, it makes so happy and so sad at the same time.

Would you really like to live in that past, where you'd be outlasted if you were anything but an aristocrat, with such low morals so your worth was defined by your wealth and race and women were so oppressed they were even forbade from riding horses. Also I severely doubt you would have had a sword - much less a castle and I really think your greatest enemy would be your selfish ruler's taxes.
