Greg and the boys discuss differences in geared poly braid reels. When selecting reels to use for your temporary fencing needs, we use geared 3:1 ratio reels. This means that every time you turn the reel handle one turn, its bobbin that holds the polybraid turns 3 times. Makes it a snap to put in temporary fences and roll them up quickly. For more grazing info check out my new book " How To Think Like A Grazier" on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

I have had cheap reels and now the good ones - the time you save is massive and let's face it, much of what we do is time consuming in this journey so when $30 difference in reel saves you time it is sooo worth it!

That was interesting, thanks for that. Here in Nz I use the Gallagher or Stafix brands with Polytape usually. Polywire on some too. However I haven't used braided poly wire yet. Gallagher have a reel with a really good plastic handle. much better thank the steel handle with pvc cover

Thanks again for all your videos! We are finally home. We took a ride down through Missouri, OKlahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Iowa. It was so much fun seeing the country side. We were going to spend the night at the Scott’s house but it is booked all the way into April. I’m glad you have so many guests. I saw a 100,000 acre ranch in OKLAHOMA. They have 5,000 head of cattle along with wild mustangs but I don’t remember how many head of those mustangs. They get 41 inches of rain and grow mostly warm season grasses so the grasses were tall and dry. They are smart people. They said their cows are around 1000-1150#. They said tried 1400-1500# cows but they lost money so they went back to smaller frames. It was warmer down south compared to home. It was in the 70s for the high but here 20s. Brrr!

Channel has more information about ranching than any other channel…. Funny how the other ones have young woman on them and you can watch the number of subscribes double all the time. Thank you Greg for quality information

Good tools aren't cheap, cheap tools aren't good. If you spend the money up front, you won't have to spend more later. Good working, efficient tools can help you save time and money. Have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you Greg, most informative. Just a thought, I assume that you will also reduce the overall length of poly braid to 1200ft or less on the trial reel before you re tension. In case freezing rain or ice again becomes a problem when reeling in. Keep up the good work on promoting regenerative agriculture, and perhaps some soil comparisons to highlight the improvements in soil quality and bio mass that you have managed to achieve during your time raising live stock. Soil health is central to countering the trend towards veganism and the anti meat/anti dairy lobby. I believe Monoculture is bad for the soil, whatever reason the crops are being grown for. Margarine is an inherently unhealthy product when compared to butter, and relies on vast acreages of vegetable oils in order to satisfy demand. Deforestation continues to occur for a variety of reasons.
@movinon1242
@movinon1242 2 года назад
For the record, the vast deforestation is occurring to grow field corn to feed livestock. 90% of corn, soya and alfalfa grown goes to feed livestock. Moving to smaller animals with better grass genetics, to reverse the massive desertification that has occurred over the last 2,000-5,000 years, is our only hope. More lamb, less beef.

One of them walks ahead and runs one of the step-in posts along to knock the snow and ice off the cord before they wind it up. Agreed about the monocrops! Always being tilled and fertilizers being dumped on those fields just kills the natural bacteria. Not to mention the pesticides to kill off the bugs and rodents. Just an outdated practice and city people have no idea how bad it is.

We are just getting started and one thing I've found is that when spooling out I need to keep a hand on the spool to keep it from free spinning and getting a bunch of loose wraps on the spool. Don't know how you do that when you're spooling it out on an ATV. Would be nice if they had a drag like a fishing reel to create some tension on the spool. Would also be nice if there was some sort of tensioner when taking it back in. One hand on the handle, one to turn the spool... I'm a hand short to hold tension on the line.

Greg-how do you splice the poly braid? Do you simply tie a knot in the wire? Do you use a bloodknot so the wire continues to roll smoothly off the reel? Do they sell some kind of connector?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 2 года назад
I tie a square knot as small as possible and use pliers on each end to pull the knot super tight

It is fascinating that the reels can look so much alike but not really function the same way I hope the new one can cut the mustard... What ever that means I think it means does a good job . looks like the young fellow didn't get the memo about the dress code for this episode perhaps I am mistaken he is new to the area and doesn't need a hat ( although I can't live without a hat well a dozen or more hats ) I do realize that some people don't see the need for them. Or they are like me , i buy plaid or checked shirts because I absolutely love them ...hanging in my closet but not enough to wear them. I found a new home for the collection and replaced them with solid coloured cotton shirts . Button up Shirts with long sleeves and nice collars . Make for the best shirts . My eyedrop alarm keeps going off so I better get at it the phone doesn't allow more than a few snooze es so off I go for the next round. Have a great evening ciao 😘💞💕💞💕🤷🏼‍♀️🌟🖖👍🖖👍🖖👍🖖🙄🤔🤗💖☘️💖🙋🏼‍♀️

Thanks Greg 🙂 They look similar to the Hotline geared reels I use (£60 to £70 new). UK viewers - where would you buy the Powerflex poly braid wire? Cheers.

Thanks for the details, Greg. One question; Russ Wilson mentioned that for his operation he prefers the light weight "mini reels" over the larger geared reals. Have you talked to him about those or tried them before?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 2 года назад
I tried them many years ago, they don't hold enough wire for our larger paddocks. Even with our 1300' reels, sometimes we have to tie to of these together to make the paddock. I would probably have to tie 4 of those mini reels together to make it across our paddocks. We also love the gears of getting it rolled up faster.
@Bearsfan131
@Bearsfan131 Год назад
I visited a dairy farm which had a couple herds of like 15-30 cows in each and they used the mini reels. They seem to work well if you're going to make smaller paddocks.

How do you get your post out when they are frozen to the ground
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 2 года назад
Take your foot and gently kick on them. If there completely frozen then I use a crow and pry them straight up, works awesome.

I really like these reels~ however I do have a problem of them getting tangled when I roll them up ….the poly braid crossing over itself in the reel, what am I doing wrong?
@georgeheller2281
@georgeheller2281 2 года назад
Keeping tension on the poly helps get it on the real more nicely.
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 2 года назад
Keep steady tension on them and only put 1200 feet of poly braid on them, not 1320’ which is a full roll of poly braid

And use, perhaps, the side to side tip made earlier on?

These versus Gallagher are night and day to me, I can’t stand them or Obriens. I have had calves and deer hit the polywire causing a shockwave back to the reel causing it to jump off high tensile wire it was hanging on where the Gallagher have the locking hook to connect it to the high tensile to almost eliminate that from happening. After a few years the wire guides start popping off those to a lot where on Gallagher they are attached better but when they do break it’s as simple as ordering a new guide and replacing it. Just my opinion and thoughts…. Gallagher is one brand that does seem to run higher than most in price but in this case you get what you pay for. I am currently testing out one of the new Speedrite extreme reels to see how it does but sure seems like they were just trying to copy the quality and mechanisms of the Gallagher without being an exact copy. Time will tell.
