For a strongman you are very lean compared to what we have seen in the past but I think you are between these 2 ranges. It would be interesting to see further examples like a dexa, submerged underwater or an MRI scan which I have heard is the most accurate.
@excat
@excat 7 месяцев назад
Issue with dexa scan is the big guys like him can't fit fully on most of the machines from what I understand. I would think water would be one of the most accurate ways from a simple physics standpoint then mri being overall most accurate. Me being the expert that I'm not, would guess 20-25% on Mitch, I think 30% is pretty high. His lower body is really lean for someone in strongman, not like olympia lean, but still, pretty dang lean.

Years ago, in the fall of '82, I did a fitness assessment in the Queen's University Fitness Centre. Part of the test was underwater weighing to determine bodyfat. I was surprised to do so well: 16%. I expected 25% based on a waist/weight nomogram. The graduate student said that nomograms often reflect population averages which may be off for a particular individual. In my case, my excess weight goes mostly on and deep inside my abdomen; therefore, my bodyfat was overestimated. My obesity trend is truncal or apple, and the population average was more uniform allover like Humpty Dumpty.

Your points on squat form and hamstring activation seem to be the consensus for most, but what do you think about ex-strongman Derek Poundstone's preference for going lowbar with maximal hamstring and glute engagement. He cited his reasons being mostly due to quad tears when performing WSM levels of weight. All this info is on his page, in his last video of a squat and deadlift seminar. The method poundstone gave works well for me but my femurs are incredibly long so obviously a unique case.

Hot take, as someone who has had one of those electrical tests done, they aren't remotely accurate for me, they claim I'm 14-15% meanwhile I'll go shirtless and get called chubby by men and women who don't work out. I'm probably around 22-23% when I was 18 years old I took that test and it claimed 8.3%, I've never had visible abs, and I'm a pretty decently built guy. 5'10 ish, 180-190 lbs most the time, and trust me if I was 180 and 8.3% I'd be nearly ready for amature natural body building show... These tests are pretty iffy, that being said when Greg said 30% I said 25% why/ cause I've worked with a bunch of sleeper builds like Mitchell and they are always soooooooooo much stronger than you think, I refuse to think they are getting that level of power out of the same muscle cross sections as me.

@ghosthero0806
@ghosthero0806 5 месяцев назад
@@geraldfisher6475 this is very false. underneath 10% is considered to be a critical danger zone where hormone regulation is nonexistent and your body kicks into survival mode, beginning to consume your muscles to keep you alive. when talking about health, there aren't magical points where things suddenly shift drastically, they are scalar. meaning that if sub 10% is critical potentially life threatening, you need to have significantly higher than that to have healthy hormone regulation and actual energy storage. 15% is likely the lowest possible safe level for certain outlier individuals, and for the average person 20-30% is "healthy". under 20%, humans demonstrate higher death rates from cardiovascular disease, which in the past led to the false conclusion that carrying more fat meant you were at higher risk of heart disease due to survivorship bias. similar to how when the US military started using steel helmets, head injuries went way up, but that was because more people were surviving being shot in the head. medical practice has not kept up with modern medical science, as most people in the field got their degrees decades ago and their education has since been made largely irrelevant. so many people, even prominent people, in the field of medicine are operating on an outdated set of standards that were set before we knew that lead and asbestos were harmful to humans.

But this is also a big man, fat is gonna me distributed differently. But based on his face and midsection, he looks around higher 20’s or 30. Also the smaller person u are the more dramatic an increase of BMI will seem and impact. A 4’11 person at 200 is wayy different (in a bad way) than a 5’11 at 300.. even tho both are around 40 bmi.. its harder to move that weight at that size. So him being that big with a 30 bmi makes sense. Im currently training to build stength and im 235 at 5’10. But im not fat. I havent done a fancy test just the one at my physician and im around 40% bmi. Which is odd considering bench 225 for 3 reps. Im fit but i build a lot of muscle. I think there is something people miss when thinking about body fat for such big dudes. The intuition we have based on us normal people does not apply, because there guys have different proportions. The formula used by this machine (the electic current/impedence is just one input), as well as by the caliper method, is surely based on the average body proportions. My point ultimately is that such huge guys have lower body fat that what our intuition suggests.

i'm 5'11, 260lbs. years ago, when i was homeless and starving, i went to the doctor and got weighed at 185lbs. the doctor told me that was a healthy weight for me, so i lifted up my shirt and showed my very visible ribcage. down to skin and bones i still weighed the high end of average. i had lost 50lbs in three months due to starvation and dehydration. if that is what it took for my body to drop below 200lbs, then i don't see how conventional methods of measuring lean mass vs body fat would possibly work for people built like me.

Told ChatGPT about this. It said “That’s a great example highlighting the limitations of BIA. When it comes to highly muscular individuals like Mitch Hooper, BIA can significantly underestimate body fat percentage because it often struggles to differentiate between muscle mass and fat accurately.” It gave a lot more info on why it’s not an accurate body fat measurement for muscular individuals, but you get the gist. Doucette was on point with his measurements.

i'd say 25% but as a strength athlete you need it but if you wanted to it would be easy to cut or work on hypertrophy and maingain for a year or two and go back to powerlifting, but lose a little bit of strength for a while

Focus on natural testosterone, sleep, good nutrition. Don't deprive your body of nutrition, this will make you lose muscle mass. Best to eat normal amount of calories, eat nutritious food (clean food), and life a balanced lifestyle.

I'd say it's in between Greg's guess and that machine, but I don't think it's 20. I'd say 24. Your upper body could be 26-30, but your legs are probably actually 18-20. Just my guess of course. I'm around 26% myself with way less muscle 🤣
@jimjohnson530
@jimjohnson530 6 месяцев назад
Thats the part many miss. Its a percentage of a whole and while athletes like Mitch have way more fat than most, they also have a tremendous amount of lean muscle and total mass. Hes not achieving record lifts with fat.
@misterringer
@misterringer 5 месяцев назад
@@jimjohnson530 Yeah nobody doubts his athletic ability. But those "sand on this conductive plate and hold the handles" machines are not accurate. A rough estimate at best. I'm guessing Mitch knows that and just wanted a clickbait title. Can't blame him. youtube is full of morons and that's how you get views unfortunately.

Don't know if the body fat is 30% but its defenitely not 20, I got down from around 27-28% to around 20% so I know, because at 27% I thought I am only 22-23 which was way off, the face doesn't look as big at 20% and especially with that ridicolous high muscle mass 20% looks quite lean! not shredded but impressive, for the average person that lifts 20% is somewhere at the middle, not lean but not actually fat, but for a mass monster you would expect to see much more definition even at 20%.
