Greg tripled his stocking density on winter stockpile strip grazing. By tightening up our grazing density with twice daily moves we have tripled our rest period over our whole farm. This allows us to allocate our winter stockpiled forage over the entire winter dormant season.

If a pasture previously had cattle on it that were being wormed with Ivermectin, how long after the wormed cattle were taken off the pasture and un-wormed cattle put on the same pasture would it take before the Ivermectin would break down and earthworms and dung beetles would appear? Thank you in advance.

Do you watch these cows when they calf for uterus infection if they didn't clean. Perhaps they need some little lutalyse.
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 3 года назад
All they need is twice a day exposure to clean grass, water and mineral. No reason for Lutayse in a healthy cow herd.

Hi. question? This video mentions cull animals. As your heard is always on the move and possibly not near any yards how do you (probably Ben And Isaac) remove unwanted animals and when. Do you cut them out with the 4 wheeler(unlikely) move them with a small number to the closest yards? Portable yards and trailered away behind a pickup? Are they sold 1 or 2at at a time or do you wait until you have 10 or a semi load? In short, you are always mentioning the culls and most of the reasons why. Video on the how and when? Thanks

The first number on the cow’s tag is the last number of the year it was born? Like, 814 was born in 2018?

Actually, Wal Mart sells cow manure for $18.99 for 4 pounds. That's $4.75 a pound. A cow patty has to be around a pound right? That's $5 a cow patty.

Couldn't you make more grass if you kept the grass out of nursing home mode? I get there is less work but curious if it makes a difference on how many heads you can carry.

I have also seen Salatin's talk about grass life stages, and I don't see a field of dead, dry, gone to seed grass here. I think if spring grass is "ice cream" they're on meat and potatoes here.
@byronmill
@byronmill 3 года назад
LOL! You watch one Joe Salatin video, hear one catchphrase, and suddenly you're an expert on grass pasture management! You should probably go watch some videos on the Dunning-Kruger effect because you seem to be headed up the peak! The grass management practices that Greg is using and teaching are for all practical purposes the same as the ones used and taught by Joe Salatin. There are no "nursing home" pastures on Greg's farms.

@@byronmill Ha! Good point, but I think my question came off wrong in my attempt to be concise. I read and listen to everything I can. Joel isn't the only one, but he's definitely the most vocal. I'm curious to understand Greg's thoughts on this strategy because Im sure he's tired both methods. I'd like to know the pros and cons, so I can make the right choice for my farm. Winter stockpiling seems to be a lot less work, but I'd like to know if there are any cons to that method.
@byronmill
@byronmill 3 года назад
@@McCoyFamilyFarm what strategic differences do you see in the way Joe Salatin grazes his cattle versus what Greg is doing? The only real difference that I observe is that once the cattle have left Joe uses chickens to "sanitize" and further distribute the manure patties, where as Greg allows natural forces and time to do the same.

What is your numbering system?
@byronmill
@byronmill 3 года назад
The first digit on the tag is the last digit of the current year. So for 2019 that would be a 9, for 2020 it is 0. So this number repeats every 10 years. The digits following that are the sequential number for calves born that year. So the first calf born in 2020 has the ear tag number 01, the 110th calf born has the number 0110.

@@jeaniepartridge6701 lol! I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and we used the same system. It's simple and it works. He almost certainly uses a written or computer record showing more details and history on the animal under that tag number.
