At 67:30 we had a sequence where we broke a high press and then moved the ball into a chance. They didn’t press all game but there were moments they did and we broke it.
@mattmexor2882
@mattmexor2882 23 дня назад
@@ItsCalledSoccer Yes, we did a good job. But the amount it relies on Ream scares me because he's getting old and we have no one to replace him in case of injury or complete decline. He was very nearly completely smoked for pace on one occasion. It was just a poor touch by the Brazilian player that allowed Ream to partially recover enough to allow Turner to make the save. Richards seems to be our second-best ball-handling center back and he's miles behind Ream in distribution and press resistance at the moment. Also, Colombia pressed a lot more and eventually we were exposed. Ream had a bad game against Colombia, but it still looks like a long term problem. I mean it's less of a problem if it's recognized and dealt with in time during a game. The thing is I don't have faith in Berhalter to do that. I can't see him completely giving up playing out of the back once the game starts, at least not before we are 2-0 down. One positive is that we did a decent job soaking up pressure against Brazil. The midfielders were very good providing cover. We did have issues with chipped passes. Whether it was by design or just something that happened in the game, I think it's good that we got some experience soaking up some pressure and launching counter attacks.

But it was. Only difference was making fewer mistakes. The goal we allowed was directly a result of Berhalter ball. Just passing around in the back half until someone makes a slight mistake and pass, pass, boom. Having Gio essentially play a 6 instead of a 10 is also Berhalter ball. Our best chances at an counter attack were slowed down because we were passing it backwards instead of attacking. Just because the game wasn't a disaster doesn't mean it was different.

Success in international football is often built on the back of the goalkeeper. Like Jake said, there are so many differing variables that come into place when playing with your national team. If you can have someone who can make a some big saves at the right times, you can keep yourself in games and give yourself a chance. Top teams have great goalies. In this game, both Turner and Allison had big moments that kept their team in the game. If Matt Turner can play at a high level, this team can play at a high level.

Who had Joe Scally go off on Serginio style runs? I did like our ability to sit deep and withstand pressure, then go off on counters. Previously we would try and press all the time and if you dont press well it leads to lots of chances on the back end.

And what place is that? US has gotten further in the WC in the past than this last cycle. US has gotten out of tougher groups at the WC than this last cycle. US has qualified more comfortably out of CONCACAF in the past. Exactly where has Berhalter taken the NT that they haven’t gotten to in the past? @@ItsCalledSoccer agreed. GGG has plenty of flaws. And he irritates the heck out of me plenty of times. But he’s helped us become the dominant force in concafe- yeah I know but still, had a decent World Cup - yeah the Netherlands was ugly but honestly how many pre tournament would’ve taken getting to the knockouts ? - And if we get to the knockouts of copa - again what are we expecting? We’re not Brazil , Argentina etc . If we make the quarters … that’s probably our ceiling . Or close to it. We have players in Europe but they’re not at Madrid , man city, psg , or Real Madrid and there’s a reason for that . They’re not winning championships for the most part of the highest level in Europe . We’re a solid country. We’re a honor roll student . But there’s a difference between honor roll and a 3.25 and straight A valedictorian 4.0. For me it comes down to this…. Pre GGG if you told me we’d own Mexico , get to the knockouts of world cups quarters or better of copa - I’d have taken that in a heart beat. Good performance from the USMNT. There are some considerations though. This Brazil is predictable, and it has been for a few years now. They have a lot of possession, but they find it really hard to break down defenses if their opponent wait for them with a low block. They also lack players with a good shot in one touch outside the goal. Rodrygo is not a center forward either, so other than Endrick, they lack a center forward. They lack ideas in attack. Brazil used to be a team where players would gather together and put a series of quick short passes in the final third. They are not that team now, or at least they have not shown it. They didn't at the 2022 World Cup either, being this one of the reasons they struggled so much to score at that tournament. Brazil has not produced good coaches for many years now. It was still a good test for the US since they have so much possession, and they have players that can do something on their own, but the USMNT will need to do better if they want to repeat this against teams that are better breaking down defenses on the final third like Argentina. Also, as you say, I am still concerned about how the USMNT will play against teams that will play in transition and that will high press the USMNT. Brazil is not typically a team that does high pressing. So yeah, we will have to wait for the match against Uruguay. Bolivia and Panama should be easy wins if the team plays well. If the USMNT plays as they did against Jamaica last Nations League, anything can happen. 7:45 On not being afraid to go for the ball with strength and physicality, that is a good thing I saw today. On the physical demand that playing like this puts on the players, the team will need to figure out ways to conserve energy. I think I noticed the USMNT players much more tired than the Brazilians, and it's no surprise since they had 61% possession, but there is not a lot we can do about their possession, except defending more efficiently. The good thing on this aspect is that Copa America knockout rounds usually don't have extra time. It is 90 minutes, then PKs if needed. 9:56 Frankly speaking, I don't care how we play as long as we win. As player development progresses and the US gets even more technical players on the ball, we can start to add other ways to play. US academies should look at the changes that Germany have done to their youth programs, for instance, making kids play 3 vs 3 in a smaller field instead of 8 vs 8 in a larger field so that the kids have more chances to exercise their decision-making. 13:13 I got scared to see Musah on the lineup before the match instead of Adams or Cardozo. There were some mistakes that could have been costly, but Brazil was also very wasteful.

I love your positive attitude and optimism Jake you don't need to apologize for that ever. While most of the team performed at their level I think Matt Turner played quite a bit above the level he has shown in the last year which is very fortunate for us on the night, but I worry that we can't rely on that performance regularly. I feel like Gregg was okay for the last WC phase but we are 2 years overdue on a new coach with fresh ideas that can really grow this team into their true potential. Scally always made sense to me for this tournament with the rigid 4-3-3 GGG system where we have to have a more stout defense against quality teams and world class wingers, love how he balled out in these 2 games.

Playing through the midfield is critical to success, and there’s a huge positive psychological and competitive component that is born out of finding success with it when you know the opponent is trying their hardest to deny it. While he wasn’t perfect, Musah did a great job of actively seeking pockets deep in our defensive third, forcing defenders to collapse and creating windows to allow unlocking passes to the wide channels. It requires bravery, endurance, and clean/quick technique. We have a lot of talent in the middle of the pitch. We need to prioritize and showcase it, and find creative ways to ensure that it is being utilized to the fullest. But it never needs to be complicated. Give the players free license to perform and create. In return, simply hold them accountable for their fitness, focus, and effort. It’s a fairly straightforward transaction.

The performance behind this draw was indeed better than the one vs England in the WC for sure. But at the end of the day, GGG has yet to jump the final hurdle to take this team to the next level. I still believe we’re one good coach away from celebrating a draw to celebrating a win. And with how important the WC is for how going deep could effect the Soccer pyramid, the USSF can’t rest on an acceptable defeat vs the first decent team we face if we make it out of our Copa America Group. Happy about the response from the players at the very least.

Frankly, I think we have a lot of trouble against good, high pressing teams and also against low block defensive teams. Colombia seem to be both. Brazil seem to play more like Mexico, just with way more quality. But all in all, I'm encouraged by this performance. The only real questionable thing was subbing in Shaq Moore. I think another highly important takeaway is that every Concacaf team played MUCH better in their second friendlies. Nations League has a huge impact on our ability to compete at the highest level. Sure it’s great for European countries because the continent is loaded with talent and Nations League is much better World Cup preparation”than random “meaningless friendlies. But we’re playing Grenada and Cuba. When we come up against quality teams we look shell shocked. I wish we could go back to meaningless” friendlies during international breaks. A low stakes friendly against Spain’s B team is still way better preparation than a meaningful game against Guatemala.

Jake, what I’ve always appreciated is your transparency, and in this modern age, ability to actually have nuance. I too, have been called a GGG apologist, mostly for saying he’s been middle of the road. I too, was closer to the GGG-out train right after Colombia, but re-watched and noticed a few things that shifted the game. Onto Brazil, here’s my biggest takeaway. Gregg had some VERY good in game management. There was the impetus to allow Scally to stay home against Vini and the overlapping runs of their LB. A far cry from his usual 2-1-6-2 in possession formation. Beyond the idea of letting Joe do what he does best, I noticed the pressing was starting as a 4-3-3 shape, then morphed, at times to a 4-4-2 which allowed for the mid block to really clog the middles, and towards the end, a 4-5-1 shape. These were not accidental, it was Gregg seeing the game, and instructing the team to shift the way they play based off the game at hand. Obviously Turner was massive, and once again, the deluge of the louder commentators (11 yanks/ Tactical manager) will complain about playing out the back when Turner launched a ball towards midfield. However, beyond that, the shift to allow Turner to simply hoof it didn’t hurt us, and we still had a very respectable 43% possession. Long comment, I know, but felt that this game, from the “nerdy” tactics perspective, was fascinating.

The keys for righting the ship are simple: 1) Put your players in a position that aligns with their strengths and 2) Adapt your tactics to the opposition. Shifting from a mid-block to a low-block kept Brazil from totally running over us but I would have liked to have seen a more dangerous transition game via lethal counters. May be better to start Balogun in the future if this is the plan going forward. But the performance was leaps and bounds better than the Columbia. There was no place to go but up. We need to see this type of intensity and tactical astuteness more consistently. But will Gregg change for the better and break his bad habits? I'm still skeptical.

0:35 Excellent. When you're about to enter the TEST or the official Competition, it's not time to change anything unless you either have to or you 're certain of the outcome of the change. You also have to be reminded that some coaches some times.. they choose to let the players under perform. There are benefits from this. I'm not saying that's what Gregg did, I have no idea... but this is a real thing that winning coaches choose to do. Sometimes it doesn't work, so let's wait until after the end of Copa America. But, the US Soccer FED must be ready to pull the trigger as you will not have a lots of time for 2026 You have to do both, TRUST Gregg and be ready for a Change. No need to create negative atmosphere around the players and the USMNT. Let everyone know they have two important Tests and let them work.

What I learned is this: When the guys are up for it, they can match anyone. Weah taking people 1 on 1 is not a good idea. Way too many turn overs and him having to track back to defend with Jr. attacking on his side was not smart. He needed help. Center Backs need more depth. We're razor thin at depth. Turner needed this game for confidence but also to show he can't be cute with the ball. Our attack can give ANY team problems. HUGE change from 10 years ago when you crossed your fingers for a goal. Midfield continues to be our strong spot. Needs to learn how to get our striker involved more to put pressure on the back line.

Much better performance, so credit to the team and coaching staff. In a competitive game Brazil could probably dial it up to another gear, but we also might have a different approach (e.g. starting the game with the more conservative posture that we took after their goal). All that being said, the two biggest takeaways for me are: 1. We have to put away our chances. The late Pulisic and Aaronson opportunities are ones you can't miss if you have any chance to steal a game like this in a competitive setting. 2. Unless he has an obviously easy and immediate pass to one of his defenders, Turner should be told to just blast the ball into the other half. He should get two touches maximum. Second touch is that easy pass or putting it into the next county. The turnover on their goal was because he was trying to loop it into McKennie and our defensive structure had no time to recover. Just not in Turner's skillset, and the sooner he and the staff come to grips with that, the better. It's so much better to just concede possession back in the opponent's half, and allow your defense to restructure into the proper shape, than to continue risking getting exposed with turnovers in our own half.
@ItsCalledSoccer
@ItsCalledSoccer 23 дня назад
It’s hard to watch that save on Pulisic. It was a great save but… if Pulisic was elite he would have slotted that home. He’s just below elite right now and it’s the difference between 3 points and 1.

@chrishenderson1262 23 дня назад
@@ItsCalledSoccer His chance early in the game versus the Netherlands also comes to mind. If he puts that away, we go up 1-0 and the whole tone of the game possibly changes in a way that keeps us on the front foot. I also think he's just below the elite wingers of the world, which is a very good level. Especially when played in systems that take advantage of his strengths and under coaches who give him their confidence (I suppose most players are like that). Hopefully we can collectively refine this portion of our game so that we start converting a higher percentage of the chances we create. It's going to be necessary if we want to punch with the big boys, and of course greater efficiency with respect to finishing will also help us separate in games where we have more talent than our opponents (upcoming against Bolivia and Panama for example).

I don't think that's a fair take. Much of the criticism of GGG is well deserved. Broadly speaking, his tactics have been poor. This tie does not absolve him of his past and frankly, I chalk this result up more to US players finally showing a little grit combined with poor tactics from Brazil; not because I saw anything special from GGG. I don't think he set up the team well against last night but the players found a way. I did see one improvement that can be attributed to the practice pitch - the US finally seemed to have a designed set piece on the Pulisic goal. Finally. This squad needs to develop more designed set pieces because those are typically our best opportunities to score and we squander so many. Did we have a single corner in this game?

#4 Physical - I think you should do an episode/cast in that USA soccer has already change the world's perception and reality of how to play the game; 1990 - 2010 USA was gonna lose the match (humor me) but USA down 3-1 in extra time was still hustling and kicking ass, and the winning/other team was exhausted and like, "we've won," but USA was still hustling/physically kicking ass. The rest of the world learned that; 1) we do not want to play the physical USA, even though we will win, and 2) we had better start training and working as hard as the USA. I believe with our M. Bradley, and others etc., work ethic, USA has already changed world soccer... no?

It was a better performance, that's undeniable. As for GB out, I don't think it was the right decision to rehire him, I'm not a fan of 2 cycle coaches at the international level. Personally, I would've hired Hugo Perez, cause he had El Salvador playing more than the sum of their parts - which is what we need. GB is an average coach, he gets this player pool to meet minimum expectations (dominate CONCACAF and get out of the Group Stage at WCs) but rarely exceed expectations. His system requires archetype players, which works in a club setting but not at an international level. Further, the slow plodding buildups in attack do not produce results against better national teams. I believe we'll see more of the same at Copa that we have always seen. They'll get results against Bolivia and Panama, maybe get something against Uruguay than lose in the QFs. That being said, I do think the fanbase has an inflated opinion of how good our player pool really is. I think much of our fanbase thinks we have a great set of players held back by a bad manager. I wholeheartedly disagree - we have a talented but wildly inconsistent (at club and international level) player pool who are coached by an average manager. Even if US Soccer fired GB tomorrow, the chances they'd find and hire a manager who is any better are slim and we'd see the same problems - with different tactics but same results..... a collection of players who cannot maintain fitness and collectively put together a string of good performances.

Our fan base uses Gregg hate to mask our players mistakes and poor play. GGG deserves most of the blame since he is a slave to Plan A and will only change pieces not going to a plan B. Yesterday he was much more pragmatic, and the players actually brought a hunger and intensity. Until GGG can make changes on the fly we will always look good if plan A works, but if it doesn’t anyone can beat us. GGG needs to utilize our 9 and stop being so extended and not connected with our midfield. Our players need more pressure on them. We as fans need to stop only placing blame on the coach. Still way too many giveaways in bad positions leading to big chances.
