I've been listening to this song for 12 years (between the original and the CSO recording). To me, this is the absolute pinnacle of poetic songwriting and musical composition. Every time I listen to it, I interpret it a little differently. That said, I have never before thought of "Stable" in the sense of Stability. Looks like I have another 13 years of new interpretation ahead of me. Thank you sir.

@@RockN2Country it was surreal, it was on the social change stage and he would play a song and then do an interview portion. When he asked for requests I was blown away that a, he hadn't played the song yet, and b, no one started freaking out and yelling for Stable song so I took the honor

If you listen to greg’s music and listen to his interviews. its all universal and its all based in nature and landscape hes brilliant. If only folk music like this was more common. Its meant to be vague its meant to be heartfelt. You’re meant to identify with it. In whatever way you do.

Love all things Gregory Alan Isakov. His music is like a comforting sweater for me. That whole Colorado symphony album is amazing. I saw him perform without the symphony a few times. He is a complete master of his craft.

@Del Medico That's so cool that you've been on this band and artist--you're way ahead of the curve, my friend! Not only was the song itself amazing in so many ways, but the creativity of and in the video was other-worldly (literally and figuratively). I mean, a chuck wagon on the moon? Unbelievably brilliant and ballsy. BTW, welcome to the channel!

This song and video speaks to me about what the human race can actually achieve. Just think about what he is saying here. Starting from the beginning of the industrial/technological age and moving forward to the moon! The scene where the first plane merges with the landing jet is amazing. Look what we can collectively do when we set our minds to it, put our egos aside and get things done!

I cant say I'm a "country fan" (I like songs here and there) but I have to say its nice to see a channel that doesnt do a whole slew of different things and focuses on what YOU like. That said, Gregory is unbelievably talented. I dont think hes made a bad song. Just great song after great song after great song. So few people in history have been able to have that consistency. I'm seeing in my suggestions, Billy Strings - Dust in a baggie. If you dont know him you will not be disappointed in the talent of that young man. Theres a very early recording he did in a basement just sitting on the couch with his friends asking him to play "that new one he just wrote" and good lord is it something to behold.

Hey Don, Jesse here! Thank you so much for doing this video, I'm so happy you enjoyed it!! Gregory has been my all time favorite artist for about 10 years, (I'm only 23), I don't go a single day without listening to his music. I discovered him through Pandora radio, believe it or not, and haven't turned my head since. I've seen him live one time, and it was spectacular. This song, according to him, is a song about everything. I see it as an anthem to the ups and downs in life. He is a lyrical genius. I'll be sure to suggest more songs by him, starting with "If I Go, I'm Goin'" & "That Moon Song." Thanks again, Don!!

This was "my" definition of absolute beauty! Ahhh what a perfect blend of orchestra and strumming. I happened across their song "Idaho" and it's been on my playlist ever since and have meant to hear more of them. I did not have the video as I was in my car, but the music alone was an OUTSTANDING way to end a very long day of dealing with this crisis. Not everyone's forte...(Dave hates this! 😆) but to me, it's 💯!!

@Christine Ems It’s funny you say David didn’t like it, as I was awaiting his comments on the song. When I post a song I sometime get an idea in my head as to who is likely to respond to it, and this one had David written all over it, though I had no idea which way he’d go. My prediction was he’s like it and would have a deep interpretation of the video that made perfect sense. Non such luck this time around-ha!!

I love this song. When it comes to finding the meaning of it, well it’s like Neil Young’s music. It’s up to the listener to interpret it. Sometimes the beauty of songs comes from the sound of the words not their meaning. Not saying that’s the case with The Stable Song. I just have loved this song since I first heard it. San Luis is another of Gregory’s songs that I really enjoy. Check it out.

My take is....the main character sold his soul for mortal advancement...... But lost out on a stable life as a result. Was drawn home away from this lifestyle......but ran back to it again later in life when the grass was aged. It's a sad story about a man's struggle between simple need & feeding ones desire.

@scottandal and @Dale Dubose For the most part I don't have that much time to hear the other songs of the artists unless I'm reacting to them. I remember making a comment in one of my videos of about a month ago that due to the fortunate situation in which I've found myself, which involves having come to the genre of traditional country fairly recently, and getting such incredible joy, along with utter amazement at the beauty of the lyrics and instrumentation, that I am purposely keeping myself ignorant of the other songs so I can have a fresh reaction on camera. There is also a difference between listening to songs with headphones on and doing things like driving in the car or working around the house, and my appreciation of the songs goes up enormously when I am focused on the songs. The time might come when I listen to the music non-stop in whatever I'm doing, but I am still a kid in a candy shop every time I hear a song for the first time. What adds to it is that many folks, like you two, already know this music and have been enjoying it for decades, and it makes me happy to know that others have had such good influences and stunningly amazing music in their lives. Traditional country is seriously intellectual music, contrary to popular opinion, and discovering what you all have known for many years is a happy turn of events for me.

Hi Don. I just found your channel for the first time. Got to you when I was going through a list of G.A.I. Videos. I really enjoyed your reaction. Seeing a guy just being his human self responding to music and images that tell a story on many different levels and is never explicitly clear in its meaning is a joyful moment for me. I guess you will by now have had a viewing of his Amazing cover of Iron & Wine's "Trapeze Swinger". It is just a sit down studio run through with one other musician. No orchestra. No video imagery. That video haunts me. Whenever I need to get back in touch with my Humanity I give it a go. I work as an ER Nurse and run up into a wide stretched swath of experiences and people so that it can be hard to digest it all and land on my feet sometimes. Gregory helps me to be able to do it. Check it out.
