Oh come on Geoff, you know full well that no government will allow you to do another man's prison time. It garners you praise, and lots of claps for something you know will never be asked of you. I dislike the narcissism implicit in that letter, and the sharing of it in public. I love Shantaram, and have read it many times, but I do think you might be prone to exaggeration and self congratulation.
I can hear you... 'Shantaram' is my 'rainy day' read and all, but that narcissistic/self-aggrandizing 'note' written in almost every line of text does literally make me blushed... instead of the narrator... What befits the third person, might be cringy/pathetic if using for the first one, so to say...
There were 2 attempts at making the movie, both failed. I think that's good. Shantaram is a great book, it's more about philosophy than the story, and movies can't show philosophy. If a movie is made based directly on Shantaram, that would make it impure.
David Poole I bet to differ. His accent is decidedly mixed. Most likely from such an extended time abroad. I know a guy born in Canberra but raised for nine years in India and his accent is quite similar.

Regardless of his accent I can tell you from personal experience .. GDR is an extraordinary being . Few ppl on the planet can come through what he has and been through and maintain his humanity ..
